If anyone wants to listen to a Rock'n good album, I suggest Matthew Sweet's Altered Beast.

My personal favorites tacks off this album:

"Dinosaur Act"
"The Ugly Truth"
"Time Capsule"
"Knowing People"
"Intro"
"Ugly Truth Rock"
"Evergreen"

Here's the only vid from the album:

Yes, well, he has some cool songs ... Forever Man, Badge, Layla, White Room, Let it Rain, I Feel Free, etc etc.

Slowhand and 461 Ocean Blvd are good albums. But as a guitar player? Nothing special.

One of the things I love about J Mascis is that I honestly cannot tell if he's a great guitarist or not. The only other guy that stumps me like that is Adrian Belew...

I saw Clapton at Red Rocks in like 1982 when he was on his Behind the Sun Tour. He put on a hell of a show, I was impressed.

My girfriend in 7th grade (she was in 8th grade, wink, wink) just looooooved Ratt. For my birthday, she wanted to get me something really great. So, she suprised me with a frick'n Motley Crue's Shout At The Devilalbum in my locker. She was all like "Look what I got you!!" she thought it was great... Ratt and Motley Crue where her "favorites". You can imagine my torture.

To your credit, you used my new favorite word ... "shred" ... but even that's not enough to sway me.

And yes, I know his 1960s work, in the very post you quoted I listed: Badge, Layla, White Room, and I Feel Free, all 60s songs, save Layla (1970).

Eric Clapton is the only concert I ever fell asleep at, true story, McNichols Arena.

Here's one that'll get your goat: I think James Young of Styx and Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser of Blue Oyster Cult are both better guitar players than Clapton. So take that.

To use a closer comparison, I would say that Robin Trower, who is a British blues/rock guitarist of Clapton's generation, can play Clapton under the table but hasn't received anything close to the same recognition or acclaim.

Clapton is a paradigm example of the inverse relationship between celebrity and talent that so often exists in the music business. It's not that he sucks - it's just that there are so many more accomplished players who don't get nearly as much recognition.

Very hard to choose

Foo Fighters
Incubus
Smashing Pumpkins
Jimmy Eat World
Led Zeppelin

This new super-group with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) is giving me PE.

Well, five was too few, so too hard to choose; but I did pick some from each "era" underlining ones I like best from each time period:

From the 60's:
The Beatles, The Buckinghams, The Who,
Lovin' Spoonful, The Mamas & The Papas

From the 70's:
The Eagles, Steely Dan, Bee Gees, Chicago,
Fleetwood Mac

From the 80's:
Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, Men at Work,
Huey Lewis & the News, U2, Mike & the Mechanics

From the 90's:
Savage Garden, Aerosmith, Boyz II Men,
Hootie & the Blowfish, The Travelin' Willburys

From the NOW 00's:
Rascal Flats, Matchbox 20, Creed, Toby Keith &
his band,

Nope. More people relate more deeply to what he has to say musically. The man plays with soul. I'm sure there are all sorts of finger wizards who can fly all over the fretboard faster, and with more agility than Clapton. Unfortunately, they've got nothing to say. Robin Trower (the Hendrix clone) being a prime example. Trower could probably play Hendrix under the table, but so what? He'll never produce the same soul. People "feel" Clapton. That's what makes him great.
