I saw Clapton at Red Rocks in like 1982 when he was on his Behind the Sun Tour. He put on a hell of a show, I was impressed.

To your credit, you used my new favorite word ... "shred" ... but even that's not enough to sway me.

And yes, I know his 1960s work, in the very post you quoted I listed: Badge, Layla, White Room, and I Feel Free, all 60s songs, save Layla (1970).

Eric Clapton is the only concert I ever fell asleep at, true story, McNichols Arena.

Here's one that'll get your goat: I think James Young of Styx and Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser of Blue Oyster Cult are both better guitar players than Clapton. So take that.

To use a closer comparison, I would say that Robin Trower, who is a British blues/rock guitarist of Clapton's generation, can play Clapton under the table but hasn't received anything close to the same recognition or acclaim.

Clapton is a paradigm example of the inverse relationship between celebrity and talent that so often exists in the music business. It's not that he sucks - it's just that there are so many more accomplished players who don't get nearly as much recognition.

Nope. More people relate more deeply to what he has to say musically. The man plays with soul. I'm sure there are all sorts of finger wizards who can fly all over the fretboard faster, and with more agility than Clapton. Unfortunately, they've got nothing to say. Robin Trower (the Hendrix clone) being a prime example. Trower could probably play Hendrix under the table, but so what? He'll never produce the same soul. People "feel" Clapton. That's what makes him great.
