Holmgren is trying to win it all in the short term. It is a risky gamble because its going to hurt in the long term but the Flyers recognized that in order to have a realistic chance to surpass PIT and WSH in the playoffs, they would need to do something dramatic and they did.
We'll see if it works. Obviously, if they win the Cup, I'm sure the fans will be more than willing to sacrifice a few years down the road, but its only worth it if they actually win it. We'll see if the gamble pays off. If they lose Knuble that will probably hurt.
