Steve Smith a great drummer. A lot of people don't know this but he plays all Jazz Fusion now. Caught his act a few yrs ago at a local jazz club. Phenomenal.

A little humor for this thread. I like this song and enjoy a good drum solo or background work.

Just watch the Clutch DVD called: Full Fathom Five. Its littered with kickass solos from one of the masters= Jean Paul Gaster.

Also, anything by Danny Carey is a friggin MASTERPIECE PERIOD. Especially live. He's THE BEST imo. Homegrown right here in Kansas.

But a few things: Joey Jordison is the third most overrated drummer out there next to Travis Barker and Lars Ulrich - none of whom are actually that good. They're great showmen, and some people take that into account, but I don't.

I read someone on here say Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins ... his solo on the Pumpkins song 'Starz' is pretty awesome.

Okay ...

I'm coming home and I need to upgrade my drumset. I was listening to some of the tones on Zildjian.com and I'd like to build my crash sound around my 17" Zildjian Projection Crash ... right now my secondary crash is an 18" A Zildjian Medium Thin which I probably can't work in. The 17" has some weird overtones that I'm trying to match with a lower pitch, but the 19" Custom Projection has too much of a high end. In terms of pitch, I think the best matches are the 20" Custom Projection Crash (which would not have too much sustain) and the 18" or 19" Custom Projection Crash (which might have too much sustain).

My question, what would be the best, versatile, compliment as a secondray to my 17" Custom Projection Crash? I want to match the sustain has best as I can and have the secondary crash close to one octave lower than the primary.

Next is the heads.

I haven’t played my kit since I left Colorado, but I’m moving back…. They’re tuned pretty low, and the batters might have too much damage to salvage. Right now my kit has Remo Emperors over Remo Ambassadors, and I’m going for more sustain ... I’d like to switch to Ambassador over Ambassadors. Will my old resonants work as batters, or will they be too stretched out? –

My current setup:

Drums:
Pearl Masters MRX, 6-Ply Maple shells, lacquer finish
Tom: 8x10 (Emperor over Ambassador, clear)
Tom: 10x12 (Same)
Tome: 12x14 (Same)
Snare: 5.5x14 Snare (Coated Ambassador over Hazy SS Ambassador)
Snare: 2.5x13 steel Peace piccolo snare (Coated Pinstripe over clear Evans G1) – a cheap piece of crap, but it works for what I use it for.
Bass: 18x20 (Clear Powerstroke 4, over factory head, I think an Ebony Powerstroke 3)

Cymbals:
14” A New Beat high hats
10” A extra fast splash
17” A Custom projection crash
18” A Medium thin crash – this is the one I’m replacing with either an 18” or 19” projection crash or 20” crash
20” A ping ride
18” fx oriental China trash - high

I haven't played the skins in years. Now that my oldest boy is getting old enough I'm thinking of buying an e-kit and teach him the basics. Any suggestions for a good starter set that is expandable.

Pearl Exports. Where else can you find an all-maple 5-piece with basic hardware for $800?

Or if you want to go all out, get the session customs, which are basically the same as the Pearl masters kits, only with flanged nickle hardware rather than die-cast... it will run you like $1,200, unless they run cheaper these days.

I would suggest starting with a cymbal pack - and not the B8 or the ZBT ones... I think Zildjian has an A Custom pack with 14" hats, 16" crash and 18" ride for like $300

And there you have it: a nice, expandable beginners kit for $1,100

----

Also, Pacific Drums and Percussion (PDP) are actually made by DW. I don't know how much they run, but I've only heard good things. I remember they actually run pretty cheap, and they have all-maple and all-birch shells. EXCELLENT drums for theprice.

I've also heard that Gretsch drums are great for the price.

Are these electronic drums you're talking? I stopped by a music shop the other day and was blown away at the prices. I'm talking 4-5 grand for a meager set. Granted the electronics were impressive.

Nope... all wood kits - the only way to go.

Once you factor in everything, 4-5 grand is what you'd pay for a MODEST top-of-the line kit. I mean the shells will run you $2,000 ... $300 for a good pedal, another $300 for a hi-hat stand ... and $300 avg for cymbals and another $100 for cymbal stands.

That said, make sure you get maple shells, or possibly birch, but make sure the birch is good. None of the Poplar crap.

Of course, you could get one of those $400 beginners sets with the $200 cymbal pack, but you'll be buying a whole new kit after a couple of years.

my neighbors, the wife, dogs would kill me if I picked up a real set.
I'm stuck looking at electronic sets for now.

You could sound-proof your basement.

Electronic drums are expensive. They haven't really caught on in studios, except in hip-hop and electronica.

I only have experience with the Roland V-Drums, but those are hella expensive. I think Yamaha makes a cheaper kit, but the only electronic drums was a normal feel are the V-drums, because they use real heads.

If you're in Denver, check these guys out http://www.drumcityguitarland.com/dr.../Drums-C1.aspx

Great guys, fairly knowledgeable. Good prices, and the best selection in Denver.

They're in Wheat Ridge. When I lived in Littleton, I'd take C-470 to I-70, exit Kipling, hook a left at 44th, and it's right in between Kipling and Wadsworth.

I can't think off hand of my favorite drum solo. I tend to find most pretty boring, and I love good drumming, it absolutely makes a song.

That being said, some of my favorite drummers:

Stewart Copeland/The Police
Terry Bozio/Missing Persons
Keith Moon/The Who
Gonzo/Led Zeppelin
Session Drummmers/Steeley Dan
Neil Pert/Rush
