I'm not a huge Ward (Sabbath) fan, but I do respect him. I am however, a huge fan of Billy Ward (Osborne & studio). |

I'll take Battery or Master of Puppets over one, those 2 have to be to thoughest Metallica songs to play on drums. One is right up there though. |

Steve Gadd - He is known as one of the greatest of all time. Rightfully so...fundamentally sound and a total joy to listen to. His solo on Steely Dan's "Aja" is great. QUOTE] You beat me to it...Steve Gadd on Aja still stops me in my tracks. Righteous. |

He is a jazz/fusion monster who has slap/funk chops for days. His mastery of chords and contrapuntal lines make his solos sound like a one-man bass orchestra. BTW, check this out: Quote:

that thing was like what? 20 minutes long... I heard the story was the band was drinking while working on the lyrics, and were trying to say "In the Garden of Eden"...and it came out "In-a-gadda-da-vida". |

Back in '89 or '90 I went to see Ratt at a small venue in Eugene Or. I have never been a huge fan of drum solos (it's usually the time in the show where I go piss and get another drink) but Bobby Blotzer put on a fifteen minute one-man-show of a drum solo that had me absolutely enthralled. Maybe he just hit it that night and never did before or will again but DAYUM he was on that night!

Peart is the best. He fits the music, more than that, he makes it his own.
The entire Moving Pictures album is a clinic on drumming. |

Saw him with the reunited Chick Corea Elektric Band a couple years ago, and he took no friggin' prisoners. BTW, I can believe I forgot to include Chad Wackerman on my list! Here's some live video to atone for my sins... http://www.kwmusica.kataweb.it/media...l/wakerman.ram ![]() |

While we are on the subject of drummers, and not just solos, how come no one has mentioned Josh Freese?

I'm reviving this thing because I need some drummer advice.
But a few things: Joey Jordison is the third most overrated drummer out there next to Travis Barker and Lars Ulrich - none of whom are actually that good. They're great showmen, and some people take that into account, but I don't. I read someone on here say Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins ... his solo on the Pumpkins song 'Starz' is pretty awesome. Okay ... I'm coming home and I need to upgrade my drumset. I was listening to some of the tones on Zildjian.com and I'd like to build my crash sound around my 17" Zildjian Projection Crash ... right now my secondary crash is an 18" A Zildjian Medium Thin which I probably can't work in. The 17" has some weird overtones that I'm trying to match with a lower pitch, but the 19" Custom Projection has too much of a high end. In terms of pitch, I think the best matches are the 20" Custom Projection Crash (which would not have too much sustain) and the 18" or 19" Custom Projection Crash (which might have too much sustain). My question, what would be the best, versatile, compliment as a secondray to my 17" Custom Projection Crash? I want to match the sustain has best as I can and have the secondary crash close to one octave lower than the primary. Next is the heads. I haven’t played my kit since I left Colorado, but I’m moving back…. They’re tuned pretty low, and the batters might have too much damage to salvage. Right now my kit has Remo Emperors over Remo Ambassadors, and I’m going for more sustain ... I’d like to switch to Ambassador over Ambassadors. Will my old resonants work as batters, or will they be too stretched out? – My current setup: Drums: Pearl Masters MRX, 6-Ply Maple shells, lacquer finish Tom: 8x10 (Emperor over Ambassador, clear) Tom: 10x12 (Same) Tome: 12x14 (Same) Snare: 5.5x14 Snare (Coated Ambassador over Hazy SS Ambassador) Snare: 2.5x13 steel Peace piccolo snare (Coated Pinstripe over clear Evans G1) – a cheap piece of crap, but it works for what I use it for. Bass: 18x20 (Clear Powerstroke 4, over factory head, I think an Ebony Powerstroke 3) Cymbals: 14” A New Beat high hats 10” A extra fast splash 17” A Custom projection crash 18” A Medium thin crash – this is the one I’m replacing with either an 18” or 19” projection crash or 20” crash 20” A ping ride 18” fx oriental China trash - high |
