The baddest machine I ever owned was this, the 1979 Honda CBX:
CBX.1979.jpg Six cylinders, six carbs, 105 HP, 8200 redline, triple discs, unmistakable engine note. I heard one the other day on Santa Fe, I heard it before I saw it. It's like a Ferrari V12, you hear that engine roar before you see it. |

That CBX was something special. Amazing acceleration and braking. 450 dry weight, 520 curb weight I think it was. It wasn't the best handler going into corners, but it had so much torque and HP coming out of corners. That bike had a band from 5800-6400 rpm that was unbelievable. And the roar from that engine was unmistakable. Like a Ferrari v12..

Gotta love the old Hondas. Honda has REALLY gone downhill in the design and innovation of their motos. |

The new CBR is nice from a technology perspective. Centralized mass and al. The RC51 is ok. They just seem to lack the soul they once did. I would go with a 1098 or Mille over anything from Japan right now. However, I LOVE old Honda's. I am trying to obtain this NC30. Pretty small for me (6-2)...a new liter bike would be better I suppose....but this bike has soul and handles better than any other bike I have been on. |

Sure, grab a 1979 CBX if you can. Only the 1979 has the max HP. The 1979 engine is the one to grab. After that it was detuned, the HP was decreased. The valve timing was detuned to decrease the HP for European sales, oddly. If it has a fairing, it's not a 1979. That's what you have to look for, the valve train, only the 1979 engine had the max HP, and only the 1979 had no fairing. To my knowledge, every CBX that had a fairing was detuned. Only the 1979 had max HP. |

Saw a perfect 1979 CBX in the Barber Museum in Birmingham AL (awesome place if you haven't been) last year during a dinner benefit with Cook Neilsen and his 1977 Daytona Superbike winner Deja Blue. Hope to get some track time on Barber this year. The track and Museum are as good as it gets for motorsports anywhere in the World. Any bike you can name from any era is there in pristine condition. This is motoheaven. |

I see the sellers don't say that the serial #'s for frame and engine match. That's a big deal for collectors. The one I had the frame and engine did not match, it was built by a Honda mechanic from two CBX's. Cost me $2k in 1994. When I was selling it I had most calls come from brokers, trying to buy it to resell it in Japan. From what they told me most of the CBX's are in collections in Japan - those with matching serial #'s, anyway. I had a nice burgundy '75 CB750K at the time also. I saw the CBX at the Honda shop and that CB750 was gone not long after. It was nice to put those two out in the driveway at the same time and shine them up. I ended up trading the CBX for a BMW R65S and $1800 cash. I just couldn't get any better offers, and I needed the cash. The guy I sold it to was another Honda mechanic that fell in love with the bike when I took it into the shop to have a flat fixed. He loved that bike. He was one of those guys that on weekends liked to go to Palomar mountain and race up and down it all day. It was horrible on MPG, maybe 30-32 MPG, but the roar from that engine was priceless. Just a superb sounding engine, and like you said a technological innovator. Hey, have you ever seen the Kawasaki KZ1300? That's another straight-six. I've seen only one, never rode one. It had a sweet engine note also, but never quite made the mark like the CBX did. KZ1300.jpg |

Prelude motor in my 4 door sedan Accord. I put down 194whp/ 157 ftlb torque while running high 14 seconds in Colorado atmosphere. I can mash on cobra's and hang with stock corvettes. Can hang with STI's, Evo's, and SRT-4's.

What's your elevation? Any idea what the car runs at sea level? I'm guessing low 13's - high 12's to beat the Terminators

5280 feet haha. Probably low 14's high 13's depending on the day and if I had slicks. People underestimate Honda's because they see all those little rice burners. My build is legit with a Limited Slip Differential tranny putting close to peak power numbers to the ground at all times.

Most cobra's run 15 secs while most vettes even the z06's run 13's. Now the SVT cobras and highly modified vettes yes they will smash me. |

Even the first year (1993) Cobra's ran in the mid to low 14's and they've only got faster since that point. Hell, even my GT ran high 14's with decent traction when it was stock. The 03-04 Terminators are mid to high 12 second cars factory stock. And the only Z06's that run 13's were the very first year, and they ran 13 flat and getting faster every year. ![]() |

I bought the very first Z1R in Colorado-there was a Kawasaki Dealer on Colfax (right by JCRS-it's now called Pasternack's Pawn Shop). It is probably the only Bike I regret selling-it looked identical to this Picture (then I put on a Kerker, K&N's, chromed some parts and changed the seat)-I traded it in for a new Harley at Flatirons in Boulder after I got a ticket for over 100 mph on Hiway 58 (between Ward Rd and Golden)-I loved that Bike-
I now have my Harley Sturgis and a 2003 R6 Yamaha-getting too old for the Yamaha, so it's up for sale-white with the red graphics- What I'm really enthused about right now is that I just got the new 502 cu. in. Big Block for my Hot Rod-I'm boring and stroking it to a 540 (shooting for 650 h.p.it should be faster than the one I just sold on page 2)-this project has been going on for a while, but I can't wait until it's done- err, sorry, rambling on here- Last edited by bronclvr; 03-04-2009 at 03:28 PM.. |
