![]() CHIEFS CUT TIES WITH VETERANS
Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 24, 2009, 7:35 p.m. EST The Kansas City Chiefs’ regime change to new General Manager Scott Pioli and coach Todd Haley has triggered the departure of three veteran players as the team announced today that it has terminated the contracts of linebacker Donnie Edwards, quarterback Damon Huard and cornerback Patrick Surtain. The combination of Surtain’s release, which was first reported earlier today by Adam Schefter of NFL Network, as well as cutting Edwards saves the Chiefs a total of $10.68 million against the 2009 salary cap. Per Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, parting ways with the trio of veterans wasn’t a surprise as they didn’t “fit with the new philosophy.” Meanwhile, the Chiefs also cut tight end Michael Merritt. Merritt was recently arrested for possession of marijuana. |

![]() TEXANS GIVE TRIO “THE TAP”
Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2009, 4:10 p.m. The Houston Texans have dumped three players from their roster in advance of the start of the new league year. Gone are safety Will Demps, tackle Ephraim Salaam, and defensive end Anthony Weaver. Weaver’s impending release was previously reported. Demps was entering the final year of his contract, at a base salary of $2.35 million. His departure clears that same amount of cap space, along with the amount of any roster bonus, workout bonus, and/or incentives for the 2009 season. Salaam also was entering the last year of his contract, at a base salary of $845,000. Weaver’s release, as previously reported, creates $800,000 in cap space. So the total savings are at least $3.995 million against the 2009 salary cap. |

![]() PANTHERS CUT HACKETT, BRIDGES, AND GOINGS
Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 25, 2009, 2:10 p.m. The Carolina Panthers have cut veteran offensive guard Jeremy Bridges, wide receiver D.J. Hackett and running back Nick Goings, according to Adam Caplan of Scout.com. By releasing Bridges, the Panthers avoided having to pay the starting lineman an upcoming $1 milion roster bonus. It also saves the team at least $1.25 million in base salary and salary cap obligations for 2009, according to NFL Players Association records. By cutting Hackett, who caught just 13 passes in nine games and two starts last season, the Panthers save at least $1.04 million against the cap as well as his base salary for next season. The Panthers saved an additional $745,000 in terms of cap and cash space by parting ways with Goings, a former undrafted free agent. |

Both sides have discussed a deal in the range of five to six years, but they remain far apart monetarily and how it should be distributed. Hmmmmmm Interesting |

![]() Panthers | Hurney noncommittal about Lucas
Wed, 25 Feb 2009 15:09:57 -0800 Updating a previous report, Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney was noncommittal when asked about CB Ken Lucas' future with the team. "Ken is here at this point. I'm not going to get into what we're going to do. I'm going to talk about what we've done. What we're going to do isn't something I want to talk about. We're obviously always working on things and talking about things, but I really would rather comment on what we've done at this point, because anything else is speculation," Hurney said. |

![]() LUCAS SAYS NO THANKS TO LIONS TRADE
Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 1:28 p.m. EST The Carolina Panthers have tried to trade cornerback Ken Lucas to the Detroit Lions. But, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, once Lucas made it known that he wants no part of playing in Detroit, the deal fell apart. Lucas has a base salary of $5.6 million; cutting him would free up $2.375 million in cap space for the Panthers. It’s unknown whether the Panthers tried to enlist receiver Steve Smith to “talk some sense” into Lucas. |

![]() REPORT: COWBOYS COULD CUT SAFETY ROY WILLIAMS
Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 26, 2009, 2:33 p.m. EST The Dallas Cowboys may cut ties with former Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, a potential transaction that would create an additional $2.18 million against the 2009 salary cap. Williams finished last season on injured reserve with a broken forearm, starting just two games and recording six tackles. For his career in Dallas since being drafted in the first round in 2002 out of Oklahoma with the eighth overall pick, Williams has 506 tackles and 19 interceptions. Meanwhile, Schefter reports that the Cowboys are expected to cut backup quarterback Brad Johnson for an additional $2 million in salary-cap space. |

![]() The National Football Post has learned that free-agent wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh and the Cincinnati Bengals are close to reaching an agreement on a new contract. It’s believed there’s 70-percent chance Houshmandzadeh returns to Cincinnati next season, sources said.
An eight-year veteran, Houshmandzadeh caught 92 passes for 904 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games last season. |
