I attended an interesting Bronco Quarterback Club meeting tonight. Guests were Bob Mantooth (an nfl replay official), Keith Burns (broncos special teams coach), and Sam Adams (rocky mountain news columnist).
Mantooth was the most interesting. He's a 10 year veteran of the replay booth and shared these tidbits: Most times when the ref goes to look at a replay for a challenge the replay official tells the ref which way to rule on the call. The ref has the final say and most of the time just goes with the replay official's opinion. The ref is often out of position and doesn't see the disputed play "live" - by the time he gets to see the replay the replay official has had a longer and better view of it. And the ref only has 60 seconds to make a decision. In the 1st Denver/San Diego game on the disputed Cutler pass/fumble at the end of the game, the ref told Norv Turner that he wasn't going to get the ball back if he challenged the call. Turner challenged so that if it was ruled a fumble and early whistle, the ball would be put on the 10 yard line instead of the line of scrimmage (this is exactly what happened) There are four people in the replay booth. The replay official is the main guy, and he's assisted by a video man, a technician, and a communicator to the field. They are working the whole game, making judgements on calls that aren't even challenged, so that when a challenge does happen they are ready. The replay official sees the same feed as network tv. For preseason games they use the home team feed. Sometimes in preseason games the visiting team's feed has a better view of a play but they don't see it. The replay can't rule on who caught a ball between 2 players (such as when a defensive back and receiver are battling for possession of the ball) Some call for full time officials, but in Mantooth's opinion this wouldn't help a bit. The full time officials in the nba, mlb, and nhl are working a game several times a week. What makes an official better is working more games. 1/3rd of the nfl officials have worked in the arena league - the arena league is good practice since it is fast paced and lots of quick officiating decisions need to be made. When asked about the controversial td call in the Pittsburgh game Mantooth said "what controversy? It was clearly a touchdown" (he wasn't working the game but from the replays he saw he thought the replay call was correct) Keith Burns gave a short talk about his 13 year nfl career and how happy he was to play in Denver. He said the 1997 Super Bowl team really came together when they had to scramble to get to the airport for the Buffalo game despite a huge Denver snowstorm, arriving after midnight in Buffalo but still beating the Bills in overtime. He said it is a challenge to teach players how to play special teams because often the players are stars on their college team and didn't have to play special teams. He said the problem isn't that players are reluctant to play special teams, they just don't have experience at it. The "blue collar guys" are the best special teams players. Burns, by the way, is only one of two players in Denver history to wear three different numbers during his Bronco career. Any guesses as to what those numbers were? Sam Adams has a good sense of humor and had the qb club group laughing as he told stories about Keith Burns and Terrell Davis. Adams thinks the Broncos will win on Sunday because the Bills have one of the worst turnover ratios in the league. Overall an interesting meeting, especially the insights of the nfl replay official. |

Tyrone would be my first guess but I'll say Brandon Marshall, didn't he wear a TE jersey, WR jersey and now 19 or something?

I wonder if Bob Mantooth is related to Wes Mantooth.
Thanks for sharing I am joining the QB club because these diners sound awesome. |
