The New York Giants have ruled out halfback Brandon Jacobs for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Jacobs has not practiced all week because of his knee injury, which has been bothering him for about a month.

Not that this really belongs here....but still fun to watch:

Barry Sanders Jr. is a chip off the old block

By MJD

I'd estimate that there are about 294,428 videos on YouTube of running backs age 11 or under who are labeled in the video's description or somewhere in the comments as "the next barry sanders!!!!!!!!!!"

Today is the rare occasion, though, that we actually do have video of the next Barry Sanders. This is Barry's son, Barry Jr., doing what he does in the Oklahoma state high school playoffs. He's a freshman.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Gus Frerotte is doubtful for the game Sunday against Arizona with a lower back injury.

That means backup Tarvaris Jackson likely will start against the Cardinals as the Vikings look to stay a game ahead of Chicago in the NFC North.

METAIRIE, La. (AP)—Reggie Bush’s left knee needs further examination before he’ll be allowed back on the field for either of New Orleans’ final two games.

Noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews will look at images from Bush’s latest MRI, and coach Sean Payton said Saturday the team expects to have the results by early next week.

Bush was hurt when he was pushed out of bounds in the first half of Thursday night’s 27-24 loss in Chicago. He remained on the sideline, often wearing his helmet and standing up as if eager to keep playing, but Payton held him out after seeing him rush for no gain on the Saints’ opening drive of the third quarter.

GORE OUT FOR SUNDAY

Posted by Mike Florio on December 14, 2008, 11:24 a.m.

Moments ago, ESPN’s Chris Berman mentioned that 49ers quarterback Frank Gore is inactive for Sunday.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network previously reported that Gore wouldn’t go, but ESPN’s John Clayton hinted thereafter that Gore might try to warm up.

DeShaun Foster will get the start against the Dolphins.

HAYNESWORTH HAS “BAD SPRAIN”

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 14, 2008, 5:02 p.m.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Albert Haynesworth suffered a “bad sprain” of the MCL in the final moments of today’s loss to the Houston Texans.

The exact extent of the injury will not be known until team doctors have the results of an MRI exam, which is scheduled to be conducted on Monday. The injury took place when Haynesworth ended up on the ground with his left leg pinned under a pile of players.

Losing Haynesworth for any time at all would be a significant blow to the Titans. Haynesworth has been a dominating presence in the middle of the Titans’ defensive line this season, and he has a career-high 8.5 sacks.

The Titans host the Steelers next week in a game that could determine home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

KIFFIN CONFIRMS HE’S LEAVING BUCS

Posted by Mike Florio on December 14, 2008, 5:53 p.m.

Long-time Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has confirmed that he’ll be leaving the Bucs after the season to join his son, Lane, at the University of Tennessee.

“I made the decision last weekend and I went back and forth,” Kiffin said after Sunday’s 13-10 overtime loss in Atlanta, according to Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times. “It was a very, very hard decision because of players, our fans. When you’ve been in a place since 1996, you don’t just jump ship. I’ve had other opportunities. There was one that came up last year that was a great opportunity and people don’t even know for sure about the whole thing . But I stayed here, decided to sign back up for two years. But the club was very good about giving me the option to go with my son.”

There had been intense speculation and rumor of that the move would occur after the younger Kiffin landed in Knoxville. Coach Jon Gruden and G.M. Bruce Allen previously ducked the issue, deferring to Kiffin.

“It boiled down to one thing: It was your son, and that’s what it is,” Kiffin said. “I love these players. I addressed it Wednesday. I told Bruce. Jon was the first person I told. The head coach, he should know first. I told the defensive staff before I went downstairs at a quarter ’til 4. We had a team meeting at 4 o’clock and the whole team was there.

“I told them kind of what I’m telling you. I said, ‘Guys, this was a tough decision. I went back and forth. I said I just want you to know now. I didn’t think it was right to keep carrying it out.’”

Kiffin is under contract with Tampa Bay through 2009, but the team apparently is willing to release him. As we recently explained, the thinking in league circles is that the Bucs wouldn’t keep Kiffin from leaving, given the intense criticism the franchise received a couple of year ago for refusing to allow defensive assistant Joe Barry to join his father-in-law, Rod Marinelli, as defensive coordinator of the Lions.

The close ties between Gruden and the University of Tennessee likely contributed to the decision to let Kiffin leave. Gruden was an assistant coach at UT early in his career, and he met his wife (a former Volunteers cheerleader) in Knoxville.

SPITTING ACCUSATIONS FLY IN AFC NORTH

Posted by Mike Florio on December 15, 2008, 11:42 a.m.

In the aftermath of Sunday’s division-deciding game between the Steelers and the Ravens, there are allegations that spitting occurred during the game.

(Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher has an alibi.)

Specifically, Pittsburgh punter/holder Mitch Berger claims that Ravens cornerback Frank Walker spit in Berger’s mouth [Editor’s note: well, so much for eating lunch now] after the extra point attempt that cemented the final score.

“The guy dove, he tried to take out [Jeff Reed’s] knee,” Berger said. ”I went over there and he got up and he spit in my face — and they called [a penalty] on Jeff for pushing him!

“I tried to get in the middle to separate him but he got in my face and spit right in my mouth,” Berger said. “He spit right in my mouth. I’m still trying to spit that . . . out. I was talking to him, trying to separate everybody and he spit right in my mouth.”

We’ve watched the tape of the game to see if there’s any evidence of a magic loogie; the live camera cuts away as Berger seems to be accosting Walker after Walker dives at Reed’s plant leg.

The replay angle shown by CBS after the ensuing kickoff shows Walker in Berger’s face, and Reed pushing him from the side.

If the league determines that Walker did indeed spit, he’ll likely be facing a very stiff fine. The late Sean Taylor was fined $17,000 (the equivalent of his game check for the wild-card round) for spitting in the face of Bucs running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game in January 2006.

ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos waived running back Cory Boyd on Monday.
Boyd, who had been signed from the practice squad earlier this month, could be headed back to the Broncos practice squad if he clears waivers. If the Broncos don't re-sign him to the practice squad, he will be a free agent.
Boyd was a gameday inactive Sunday in Carolina.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams will miss anywhere from two to six weeks with a fractured shoulder.

Williams was hurt Sunday in a 35-14 rout of Arizona. It's a big blow to a Vikings defense that is second in the NFL against the run.

CABLE IS PISSED AT KIFFIN

Posted by Mike Florio on December 15, 2008, 7:26 p.m. EST

As the U.S. Postal Service deals with its busiest week of the year, the crush of snail mail won’t feature many/any Christmas cards crossing paths between Oakland and Knoxville.

Former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin was fired in September, complete with a scathing press conference from owner Al Davis regarding the reasons for the move.

Kiffin has since filed a grievance with the league office regarding the money that he hasn’t been paid.

And so should interim (for two more games) coach Tom Cable be upset to learn that Kiffin is rounding up some of his former Oakland assistants for Kiffin’s new job in Tennessee? Regardless of whether Cable should be upset, he is.

“I’m pissed. That’s the best way to put it,” Cable said, according to Jerry McDonald of InsideBayArea.com. “Quite frankly, that’s the only way I can put it.”

Gone is offensive line coach James Cregg, who filled the spot Cable occupied before his promotion. Director of football operations Mark Jackson and administrative aide Steve Reaves is leaving, too.

Amazingly, Reaves was still employed by the Raiders even though he is Kiffin’s brother-in-law.

For starters, Cable really shouldn’t care, because he won’t be the head coach next season. Also, what the hell are these guys supposed to do? Hang around to see whether they still have a bunk on a sinking ship or get in on the ground floor with a new opportunity?

Maybe the primary source of Cable’s frustration is that he hasn’t been invited to join Kiffin.

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Giants need another sack—to cover a flamboyant fan who wears skimpy outfits.

Sondra Fortunato went to Giants Stadium last week wearing a Santa Claus outfit, a tiara, fishnet stockings, a bathing suit bottom and high-heeled boots.

She also had a suitcase and two 11-by-17 signs reading “Go Giants” and “Have a No Guns Christmas,” referring to the team’s wide receiver shooting himself in the leg.

She insists nothing naughty was showing even though she’s “well-endowed.” As the middle-aged woman puts it, “You couldn’t even see my underwear.”

The Giants apparently saw it another way.

Security escorted her out, saying signs and baggage weren’t allowed and telling her to cover up because there were children present. She figures other women “got jealous and complained.”
