The bootlegs sound somewhat better, but it can be argued that the band was never better than this recording here. Captured months before the self-titled first album and "Light My Fire" took them from obsecurity to stardom.

I'm still on a Pat Metheny groove. Don't know why. I'm listening to Last Train Home over and over. Maybe it means something. Still amazed this drummer keeps that train beat for so long.

Nada Surf were pretty fun. They present a very positive, infectious production from a simple straight-forward rock power trio. Unfortunately, the PA at Haileys in Denton was crap and cut off at least ten times durning play! Ridiculous. The venue was absolute rubbish. The venue opened at 9 (theoretically), but the nimrods couldnt get the folks through the door until about 10:15...well into the first band's set. Exacerbating the situation was the fact that it was 35 degrees outside and everyone was dressed for a cramped, small venue and a high-energy show. The cherry on the top was the fact that the idiot venue owner (cant remember his name) stood with a blockade of bartenders after the show and helped funnel people out the door while yelling "Get the **** out of my bar!" at people that walked by. Total failure. It will take the Pixies to come through to get me back into that rathole. If you are thinking of playing Denton (which is awesome), play at Rubber Gloves, Dans or some other venue. Haileys is full of schlubs.

On to Nada Surf....

I was really impressed by the way they handled the situation. They worked with the sound crew during the mishaps and really came out of the thing smelling like roses. They could have played their normal tour set, done their thing, got the cash, and got out of their as quick as they could, but instead they played requests during times when the PA would quit, including a multiple-song interlude where guitarist/singer Matthew Caws did some acoustic tunes. They played for over 2 hours all told.

They are tight, fun, and infections. Excellent rock music with catchy pop melodies. Check 'em out if you can...hopefully in a better venue than Haileys.

Oh man, I LOVE there 2002 album Let Go. In my opinion one of the best albums of the decade. Power pop sublimity. "Inside of Love" is hard to to beat.

Great thing about Nada Surf is that after their one real hit on the tail of the grunge era, they went on to make music. They developed a sound and really became something that contributes to the movement of rock music.

Theyre nice guys, and are really focused on making sure that you leave their show having gotten your dollars worth. Very respectable.

Premiere: NASA [ft. Tom Waits and Kool Keith]: "Spacious Thoughts" [Stream]

Kool Keith and Tom Waits, together at last. The pairing between the rapper and the brawler/bawler/bastard doesn't sound much more natural than you'd expect on "Spacious Thoughts", the first track from the forthcoming debut album by Squeak E. Clean (aka director Spike Jonze's brother Sam Spiegel) and DJ Zegon (aka Ze Gonzales) as NASA. But it's an intriguing experiment nonetheless. Kool Keith shares some colorful reminiscences about the stars-- "I was up there watchin' James Brown's pockets/ Stuffed with Jolly Ranchers/ When the NFL had the Rams in Los Angeles"-- over a haunted, horn-bolstered psych-funk groove. Waits' ragged howl interjects in between Keith verses, carrying in its gale some archetypally Waitsian stuff like, you know, strangling a monkey with a clock, boarding a night train, or how "they say the moon, it smells just like a cherry bomb." It's well worth a listen even if just to hear Waits utter the words "ghetto booty."
