I think Missouri is for real. I have some doubts about Kansas although what they did was very impressive. My early early guess of the Big XII:
1. Missouri 2. Nebraska 3. Kansas 4. Colorado 5. Kansas St. 6. Iowa St. Big XII South 1. Oklahoma 2. Texas A&M 3. Texas Tech 4. Texas 5. Oklahoma St. 6. Baylor |

I think you can almost lock in the #1 and bottom two in both divisions. It's the 2-4 that are almost impossible to call right now.
Do you really believe Texas could finish 4th? That would surprise me, but I have to admit they didn't look like world beaters by any stretch at the end of last year. They did pick up Will Muschamp, arguably the best DC in the country. They could very well push OU...or fall apart (by their standards) and finish behind the other texas schools. |

They simply have been outrecruited the past couple of years. Who's going to run the ball? Who's going to catch the ball? Who'll rush the passer? Who'll cover the receivers?
Colt McCoy is a good quarterback if you surround him with top talent. But he's not the sort of player that can turn poor talent into good talent. Vince Young could turn a bad team into a good team (at the college level) but McCoy is no Vince Young. |

For the record, the term "Husker Nation" was a Stevie Pederson creation, probably to capitalize on all the "Red Sox Nation" bull****. So I kind of hope Husker Nation did die, and that we can now go back to being the Nebraska Cornhuskers, not whatever we were watching last year.
But yeah, that video about sums it up. |

Yeah! Cody Green, 4-star on Rivals 5-star on Scout. Dual threat. We still have Zac Lee and Patrick Witt in the wings, so I feel good about our QB depth, despite our recent inability to keep top QB recruits in the fold.

Saw the Colorado one posted on their thread, so I thought I'd link the NY times blog preview of Nebraska. I'm actually really impressed by how in depth they go and how knowledgeable they are. Most outsider previews bug me (i.e. new coach Pelini. Can he fix defense? End of preview.) so this one is a pleasant surprise. Have to say I agree with most of it.

Nebraska QB Ganz: More running plays coming
1:39 PM Mon, Jul 21, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz Brandon George E-mail News tips Nebraska quarterback Joe Ganz said fans can expect him to be running with the football more this season in an effort to keep defenses guessing. Ganz said Nebraska has put in more quarterback running plays in its offense to take advantage of his dual-threat ability. Ganz said he might have between 10 and 15 carries in some games. But don't expect any quarterback option like the old days, he said. He'll be doing more zone read runs similar to what Missouri and Oklahoma State will use, he said. |

I personally do feel that we have to agree that CU is a rival. Neighboring state, pretty strong hate on both sides, and a few (though not very many) important and memorable games.
Thing is, though, K-State in the late 90s and Missouri now also meet those criteria. The truth is, CU-NU was a compelling rivalry for a few years in the early 90s (maybe early 2000s) when both teams were national contenders, but now its hard to consider it much more than any other division rivalry. That being said, I do agree with the article that we do need a real rival. The Big XII kind of killed the OU rivalry (though OU's ineptness in the 90s and our recent suckiness haven't helped). It would be great if we could get good again and have another solid team in the division to duke it out with regularly for the crown. The thing is, though, must Husker fans would be just as happy if that rival turned out to be Mizzou or K-state (Lincoln is much closer to Columbia than Boulder, which means we have to put up with more Tiger fans). CU, I would guess, will only really ever have eyes for Nebraska. |

With the exceptions of a few big games, CU has pretty much been a doormat for NU. They haven't really been competitive enough with us to get viewed as a true rivalry. As the article mentions, since the Big 8 became the Big 12 CU has pretty much become our rival by default. Again that isn't meant to offend the CU fans, just my honest opinion of this rivalry situation. |

2. I have heard many nice things said by many Nebraska fans and players about my beloved Buffs over the years. My reasons for not liking the Huskers: 1. Some Nebraska fans conveniently forget that their student section chanted, "Where's Sal?" during NU's 27-21 win in 1989. That would be former Colorado quarterback Sal Aunese, who had died of cancer earlier in the year. Also that they painted in red letters just across the Colorado/Nebraska border, on the highway: "Sal Is Dead, Go Big Red" I don't ever recall CU fans saying or doing anything horrible when Brook Berringer was killed on that terrible plane crash. 2. Tom Osborne... In 1990 (Our Only Championship Season) say what you will about the 5th down against Missouri and Georgia Tech ending up undefeated. Fact is, Colorado went into the Orange Bowl ranked #1 and won against Notre Dame while GTech crushed a lower ranked Nebraska team. The ONLY reason the Championship was split was because of Tom voting Georgia Tech #1. He was the ONLY one! For as much as it's been kinda one sided for a rivalry, Michigan is 20 games up on Ohio State in their history. I like the energy Coach Mac brought back in 1982...here's a link that explaine things better than I can, and it's by a Nebraska fan! http://doubleextrapoint.blogspot.com...f-rivalry.html Last edited by ABA6776; 08-06-2008 at 12:56 PM.. |

ABA, I certainly understand why both the reasons you stated have led CU fans to dislike Nebraska (even if the Sal stuff was a small number of fans, it was disgusting enough for me to understand a lot of the bitterness). I would say, however, on the Ga Tech thing that Osborne was simply one vote along with many many other coaches who thought Ga Tech was the better team.
He did play both teams, and I don't know think he would be petty enough to take away a national title (which would help the conference image, no less) for no reason. Remember GT was actually undefeated (1 tie), while CU had a loss, a tie, and the 5th down. I think CU certainly deserved a share of the title for winning the Orange Bowl, but its a stretch to say they were clearly more deserving than GT. Anyway, I do think CU is, on the whole, our biggest rival in the North, and will probably grow in stature over the years as memories of the Big 8 fade. Hopefully both teams can improve and make it a nationally known rivalry. I have a lot of respect for most the CU fans on this board, so I do wish a lot of the stupidity in terms of stereotyping each side could die down from some of the more ignorant fans I hear about. Granted, NU fans (the older ones especially) do have something of an annoying "holier than thou" streak, and CU fans (the drunk younger ones) did confirm every suspicion NU had of them by trashing their own field in 2005. But what's a little hatred amongst friends. November 28th. I hope to be there this year. |
