Dipso pointed out that TJ recently turned off User Note pictures ... and thats's in addition to avatars still gone, and no more "Users Currently in This Thread" or "Who's Online."

But I really REALLY like all of these features, and I have a few questions:
  1. What is needed to upgrade the site to be capable of handling these features again?
  2. If it's about money, the OM annual pledge drive is in three months, what should our target $$$ goal be? Should we move up the fundraiser to now?
  3. I had always heard that images hosted off-site (ImageShack, PhotoBucket) do NOT hog resources. Is that true? If so, why are User Note images off?
  4. Can you turn off local on-site image-hosting and sig hosting? That would save some resources.
  5. What is the off-season (right now) chances for any of these features to come back?

Lord knows I post more images around here than any two other posters combined, so if the OFF-site hosting is a resource hog, let me know.

I know it's probably not a popular decision but instead of a yearly funds drive... why not consider a yearly membership?

It might weed out those random passerby trolls and would allow for a consistent flow of income to support the server fees.

Flame away.

I think we should have a "Sponsor" or "Member" status that you can have. But purchasing said membership, you gain the features of having an Avatar, seeing who's online, etc. I'd be all for it, since I already do it at another site.

Yeah I noticed the user notes pics were suddenly gone. I also wondered why you couldn't see who was in a thread anymore as well. TJ what needs to be done so we can get this ship back to full steam?

I'd be all for a membership, as long as it's reasonable. Having the features running at 100% definitely makes this a better place.

Avatars aren't a big deal to me, but it means a lot to the other members.

I didn't pitch in on the last drive, this time around ill try and do so.

As far as I know, TJ has always said the upgrade wouldn't be worth it and that's what's always prevented it from happening.

I'd say to do absolutely anything possible to avoid making this a membership based site. That will be a kiss of death, imo. There's plenty of sites on the internet that do the exact same thing the Mane does and while the mane is the best, it's not likely to be so preferred that many of the non-regulars would pay for long. Also, once you do make it membershipped, you'll deter any new members. Are you going to give a trial period to get new members? That'd be the only way to entice new members but that still wont help as I could take 10 minutes and make a new account every gameday if I still felt the Mane was the best place to come.

Just something to think about...
A fishing site I occasionally go on has a "sponsor" tag that you can get if you donate a certain amount of money. Maybe you give those people priority and at high access times when the mane is slugging along, limit it to a certain number of members that'll automatically include those "sponsors"? As far as I know, the Mane doesn't have too many bandwidth issues until high traffic days and those days are generally predictable.

If people would click on the banners more often a funder raiser wouldn't be neccessary.

That's a damn good point .... if the links opened into a new window, it would be a lot easier, but instead you're forced to leave the board with every click.

Maybe it's just me, but for some reason I don't quite get, I liked it when I knew who were the "Users Currently in This Thread." I'm not sure what good it did to know that, but I liked it anyway.

The idea of paid memberships, etc, has been discussed several times, but I think TJ prefers an open, free site ... which is cool. But there should be some threshhold of bandwidth he can buy if we contribute enough, problem is we don't know what it is ... I'll PM TJ to come in here

Already suggested this last year. If TJ needs more money, he should have the pledge at the beginning of the football season when we all think the Broncos are going 12 and 4 (or Atlas having us go 16 and 0). I suggest we wait until Ron Paul is officially out of the race, so we know the pledge will go towards the site and not RPA (that is Ron Paul's Army). Is it coincidence that we lost a few goodies during Ron Paul's campaign? Millions have been given and I bet all of us that donated will show up on the donation list of the Ron Paul for President campaign. Conspiracy? You decide.

I have started, along with Kaylore, an "Annual OrangeMane Pledge Drive" the last two years, right around minicamp running up nearly to training camp (TJ's server payment is in July, and he usually goes out of pocket to pay it). Suggested donation has been $25 a year if you can swing it. I always say if you visit/post more than once a week, you should really try to give at least $10 a year ... that's not much really, just two fast-food lunches.

I spend about an hour a day (or maybe more) on average in here ... at least 300 days a year. So it's worth a few bucks if we can have a more pleasant environment -avatars, pictures, "Who's In This Thread," and other niceties. It's no different that paying extra for plants or a nice chair or big computer monitor for your office ... it's all about creating a nice environment for where you spend your time.

Dude 16-0?? I never predict the Broncos to go 16-0! What's the purpose in that? The 'Effing Patriots go 16-0!! I say Denver goes 19-0!!

Atlas's picture he puts in user notes is worth far more than $25 alone.

Sorry fellas... Right now I've got family in town right now, so I can't address these issues until my company leaves and I get caught up at work from the time off I've taken.

A two tier membership structure seems the way to go. Membership allows you to have additional features, but non-members are still able to post and start threads etc.. exactly how it is now

i love it but Barack Obama will see to it that it isnt fair and we must have a system where those that donated must pay for those that are too cheap to pay. And yes, I donated the last few years.
