I know there is a quote that goes, "reasonable men may differ in matters of taste." That is a more reasonable way to look at it, don't you think? I just cannot bring myself to be intolerant about people's musical choices .... in fact, this thread is less about music to me, and more about tolerance. We went through a couple pages there recently where I learned a few things about tolerance for what moves others, as I hope we all did.

And yes, k.d. lang's "ingenue" is as good as any album I have ever heard. Listen to "Save Me" or "Outside Myself" with an open mind. If you don't agree, fine, but at least you will have tried.

In any event, no intolerance intended, homey - I can't fathom how anyone could rate K.D. Lang so highly, but I also know it's all "in the ear of the beholder," as it were, and I'm sure a lot of my favorite things would leave you scratching your head and saying "what the I'd like to crawl in the same snuggie with is he thinking?" so it's all good.

Seriously though, check up on k.d. lang, ask your friends. She is widely - and I do mean widely - considered among the greatest of all female pop voices ... that means with the likes of Streisand, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and for my money Benatar and Ann Wilson. You might not care for her style or her music, but there is no denying the voice. That beautiful instrument is not subject to these vagaries of taste.


I think lots of things are just imprinted, based on life experience at the time, etc. For example, Peter Frampton's 'Frampton' album - the last studio album before 'Comes Alive' - was imprinted on me at a particular period in my life. I am aware that my love of it is not widely shared, but that really shouldn't matter. If it moves you, it moves you. Lang's "Ingenue" and it's brooding moody aura came along at a similarly impressionable time for me. Unlike 'Frampton,' 'Ingenue' won Grammys and was univerally praised by critics ... but that makes no difference to my appreciation of it.

Another example shared in here, "On the Loose" by Saga, a song I've played at least 100 times the past month and still play during workouts. My adrenaline explodes with that thing, and that's a good thing. Or right now I'm practically bawling listening to Orbison's "Oh Mama," even though I have little doubt 99% of those on this board would lose their lunch over it.

I don't mind KD's voice, but I wouldn't label it as "best ever" or anything...I'll dodge debate by toting the "In matters of taste there can be no dispute" party line in keeping with the feel good vibes of the last few posts

Seriously though, wanna burn a couple of hours, go back to the beginning of this thread sometime and read it all the way through....very informative and entertaining IMHO.

I'm familiar with her stuff - I was in a few top-40 road bands back in the early 90s that covered some of her tunes.

Frampton was one of my top five influences and musical heroes when I was a kid starting out on guitar! (Along with George Harrison, Jimmy Page and Alvin Lee.) I worshipped the guy! From The Herd to Humble Pie to his solo career, I've bought just about every record he's ever made. When I was fourteen and lived in Evergreen, CO, my favorite record was Humble Pie's "Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore." I used to wait until my folks went out, and then I'd blast it at top volume. PF is one of the most shamefully underrated rock guitarists of all time, IMO. After the success of "Comes Alive" the press started focusing too much on all the peripheral show business razzmatazz and not enough on his guitar playing, sadly. During this same period, his career was pretty much hosed by a greedy, short-sighted, and incompetent manager (Dee Anthony.)

I really dug that tune when I first saw it on MTV c. 1983. Those guys are all really accomplished musicians. I respect anyone who has really put in the time and hard work it takes to master an instrument or vocals - even if I don't care for the style.

I just watched that "I Don't Need No Doctor" video, and if you pay really close attention at the very start, the screen behind him plays the original Humble Pie intro from the live album, where a giddy 19-year old Peter warbles out in an English accent, "We go 'ome oh Monday, but we wanna tell ya, we sure 'nuf had a gas this time - it's really been a gas!"

That video also include a lead vocal from the late, great Bob Mayo at 1:20 ... damn good voice!

Actually, that's Steve Marriott saying "we go home on Monday..." - not Frampton.

Also, PF was born 4/22/50, so he would have been 21 when the Fillmore record was recorded.

I miss Bob Mayo! Frampton's band just hasn't been the same since he passed away.

It's Marriott.

One way you can tell is by the cockney accent (listen to the way he pronounces the word "Monday" for a good example.)

(Not that I need to know this to tell the difference - Humble Pie was my favorite band when I was a teenager.)

Marriott grew up on the east end of London, and Frampton was from the middle class borough of Beckenham, Kent.

If I remember correctly, that clip that Frampton played at the start of "Doctor" in that Youtube video was also used in the Marriott memorial concert that happened a few years back.

Listen to Steve Howe of Yes play the pedal steel. The song "And You and I" has some of the coolest pedal steel Ive heard.
