![]() Is that slacker generation code for someone who can play more than open position cowboy chords?
Shall we pull up Carlton's credits and compare them with yours? Quote:

He is a fine player, and has probably made a decent living off of his skill. I have no doubt that he is well accredited. Quote:

![]() So, LABF...if you are buddies with Carlton, let him know that it might not be the best idea to sport the mullie. For his sake. |

![]() I'm on a big Coheed & Cambria kick right now. All very talented musicians.
I'm also going to see THe Black Crowes in March, so hopefully that'll be cool. |

![]() Q - How many guitarists does it take to change a light-bulb?
A - Twenty. One to change the bulb and nineteen to say "Not bad, but I could've done better." Q - What do you throw a drowning guitarist ? A - His amplifier. Q - What do you call two guitarists playing in unison? A - Counterpoint. Q - How many guitar players does it take to cover a Stevie Ray Vaughan tune ? A - Evidently all of them. Q - What do you call a guitar player without a girlfriend? A - Homeless. Q - How do you make a lead guitarist slow down? A - Put some sheet music in front of him. Drumroll please! Q - What's black and blue and laying in a ditch? A - A guitarist who's told too many drummer jokes. ![]() |

For the record, I'm no fan of "wanking" either (can't stand to listen to Yngwie and his ilk) but there's a difference between playing a lot of notes just to impress people with your chops vs. playing a lot of notes that make melodic sense or have some sort of melodic design. It's funny how guitar players are the only musicians who get slammed for playing fast or playing a lot of notes - you never hear anyone accuse John Coltrane of being a "wanker." Seriously, do you even know who Larry Carlton is or who he's recorded and/or performed with? |

![]() I might buy some of what llama is saying for a guy like Al DeMeola, whom I've always felt was needlessly infatuated with speed and flash, but Larry Carlton is so much more than that ... to marginalize him like you're trying to do llama is like summing up Paul McCartney's career by saying, "yes, he's a very good bass player."
LABF - didn't Carlton play lead on Steely Dan's "Reelin' in the Years"? Probably a bit too formulaic for your taste, but I always loved that solo. Last edited by BroncoBuff; 01-18-2008 at 08:04 PM.. |

I will go on record as saying that nothing was more of a drag than playing with the "uber-guitarist" ..the guys who are much more interested in being challenged with complex scales and time sigs than actually having any fun, sneering at anything that doesn't match their "level of musicanship". The constant demand of perfection may be the way of it in the session world but in a band enviroment, nothing sucks the life and fun out of it all quicker than someone like that. Give me an inspired amateur any day of the week instead. |

So, he had this great gear, and was a jazz guy too, and we were at his house listening to Al DeMeola (whom he worshipped), and I said something like "he reminds me of Eddie Van Halen in that speed and flash kinda come first." Well, he lit into me a bit, and actually said something like, "man, you need to buy some Stridex and listen to some decent music, then come back in a year and tell me what you think." Everyone laughed - even my friends! And LABF, there were GIRLS THERE!! AND THEY LAUGHED TOO!!!! I'm still not over it ... I need to heal from this, LABF. TELL ME I WAS RIGHT ABOUT AL DEMEOLA! HEAL ME LABF! HEAL ME!! ![]() |

![]() 3 albums have pretty much been in rotation this week.
Low- Things We Lost In The Fire Took me a while, Low has been on my "need to check out properly" list for years, finally got around to it, and I'm relly smitten with this album especially, wonderful vocal harmonies. Radiohead- In Rainbows First Radiohead album since OK Computer I can listen to full length, later albums have had their highlights and some amazing songs (Pyramid song, 2+2=5 to name a few), but a load of senseless wankery too, now the focus seems to be back on writing tunes, Jigsaw Falling Into Place is a winner. Dark Tranquility- Projector Thought I was done with metal years back, still listened to some of my old favs (or at least one Paradise Lost), but hadn't encountered a metal band for 5 years that had spawned my interest, man that changed with this band. For a year I've been on a ride around their discography, pretty sure not many around here listen to stuff labelled melodic death metal, but labels are misleading, this is quite simply intense passionate beatiful melodic music. Too bad people can't get past the growling. Wow, bit of an afternoon rant there, oh well |
