No the guy can't recruit to save his life. We weren't going to do anything with him either.

breaking news on espn.com

Barring any last-minute snags, LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini will be introduced as the new head coach at Nebraska early next week, multiple sources confirmed Friday.

Pelini will coach the Tigers defense Saturday in the SEC championship game against Tennessee and, according to a source close to the situation, will be in Lincoln for an announcement Monday.

Pelini and Buffalo coach Turner Gill were believed to be Tom Osborne's final two choices to replace fired Bill Callahan. Both have Nebraska ties -- Gill as a former player under Osborne and coach under Frank Solich, and Pelini as a former defensice coordinator under Solich.

The move further complicates LSU's postseason. Head coach Les Miles is expected to meet with Michigan Wolverines early next week about its head-coaching vacancy. LSU is making an effort to keep Miles, but he's a Michigan alum who has often voiced his affection for the Wolverines program.

Pat Forde is a senior writer for ESPN.com. He can be reached at ESPN4D@aol.com.

Yea, just heard that Pelini took the job. I know some Husker fans wanted him. Congrats.

I still think head coaching experience is an absolute must for a big program like NU, A&M, Michigan. No disrespect intended, but again, Solich was a long-groomed assistant like Pelini.

Best of luck ... it only helps all of the Big XII if Nebraska does well

Denied already, but then again that was to be expected as it can´t be in Pelini´s or LSU´s best interest for this to get out on the evening of the day before on which they´re playing for a BCS Bowl and $ 17m.

I thought you would be happy with this hire, DB. I think Pelini is a good coach and did a fine job with Nebraska's defense during his stint there. I think this is a really good hire for you.

Do I have reservations about Bo? Yeah. But if TO felt he was capable of leading this program, then I am willing to trust his judgment more than almost anyone else in college football. There is a lot to be excited about Bo. He is a close friend of stoops, has worked at the NFL level as well as at four of the biggest programs in the nation (Iowa, Nebraska, OU, LSU) and played at Ohio St. He certainly has college football in his blood, which we couldn't say for our last coach. Everyone who has played for him can't seem to say enough praise. Just seeing the reaction (or lack there of) by the players to Callahan's firing has shown that he failed to really win the loyalty and love of his players. I don't see Bo having that problem.

The outcry will be that we could have had an experience head coach. It will be very interesting to see what TO and Pelini say at the press conference about this. I do look forward to seeing someone a little fiery on the sideline. While the stoic leader is great (Shanahan, Osborne), there is something fun about the guy who is willing to go off on a ref. Just so long as he doesn't do any throat slashing...

I think you guys will be ok. Not sure how the defense will come along but with that new Qb in place your offense seems to be going in a positive direction. And as you said, if Pelini gets the respect and loyalty of the players than it should turn out well.

I just don't think he is much of a recruiter so it feels to me alot like Frank all over again. Maybe it will be different now that we run a WCO. I really think Turner will be a great coach though and he would have been the better way to go.

I don't see why you guys can't get a proven big name coach to take the HC job.

I think we could but we don't seem to give it much effort. The thing is its not just about football with the state you have to have a sense of pride to go along with it. Call it old school but it is what it is.

Bo meets with the players at 2:30. Official press conference at 4:00 (central I assume).

Sounds like Bo is putting together his staff pretty quick. Reports are that Shawn Watson will be back as OC.

Now...I know how all you CU fans feel about Watson. Even NU fans weren't always crazy about him. I think there is a good case for keeping him, at least during this transitional season:

1) The players all love him and it would be good for them to have some comfort level with the new staff. Osborne also seems to like him, and even took him out on the recruiting trail with him.

2) Watson was up in the booth most the season while Cally called plays. When it became obvious change was needed, Watson came down to the sideline and started taking over some of the play calling. In those last 3 games we averaged well over 50 points, a couple of those games against pretty solid defenses. Most people close to the team say Watson was a big reason why.

3) Our offense finished 11th in the nation. Yeah, we struggled in some of our bigger games (only 6 points vs Mizzou), but I would guess we'll see some adjustments while keeping what was starting to work. No reason to start from scratch when we have a good shot to have a very solid offense. Pelini will have enough work turning our sorry D around. Some stability on O will help a lot.

Anyway, Watson deserves a shot to lead the offense. Hopefully we can utilize the mobility of Ganz and get a more consistent running game.

I agree, Watson will be much more hands on with the team. Its good news for recruiting as well, more so with the guys we had coming in already.

I think it's kind of a swing for the fences type deal...... very similar to his longtime friend Bob Stoops.... that one has worked out pretty good so far.

I would have been happy with Turner Gill, or even Brian Kelly. I am glad they didn't go with someone like Grobe or Pinkell.

Looks like this new staff is going to have a lot of familiar faces on it. Cotton, Sanders, Brown all TO/FS coaches are coming back. Is Pelini actually hiring this staff or is TO?

I think its a joint deal but you can see the guys he brought in like his brother Carl Pelini, Mike Ekeler and John Papuchis. I know nothing about John other then what it says about him on the JournalStar. Hes a 29 year old intern from LSU. Mike was the strength coach from LSU.

I wonder who the DC is going to be. My bro doesn't think it will be Sanders.

We needed someone to run the O. Watson is well liked so that is something. Dr. Tom took him recruiting as well.
