haha, guilty as charged. I really have tried to be something of an optimist throughout this whole regime change. It probably was because I was glad to see Solich go, and I thought a new direction was good. The top 10 recruiting classes were also very appealing after the Solich years. We even played some top teams tough--I mean we had Texas beat in 06 if we don't fumble.
I honestly don't hate Callahan much as a person. Yeah he has done some idiotic things--throat slash, f'in hillbillies (even if it is true)--but I do think he believed in what he was doing and wanted to lead this program for a long time. He must be charming as hell, because he gets the recruits to buy in. The problem is I don't know if they keep buying into it once they start playing. He has lost this team, in a way eerily similar to what happened his second year in Oakland. The other nail in the coffin is that Solich got fired not because he went 9-3, but because those 3 losses were ugly blowouts. Nebraska can accept losing to Texas, Missouri, and K-State occasionally, but we can't accept getting blown out regularly. Cally has managed to be even worse in this aspect, getting blown out of the water by teams (KU? Oklahoma State twice? Missouri twice?) with lesser or equal talent as us. But, yeah, the hardest part of this was that everyone was starting to get ready to come around and embrace him and his new direction. He got an extension, he had almost exclusively his recruits playing and even the media was starting to hype our chances to return to prominence if we gave USC a game. Well, we all know how that played out. And the rest, as they say, is history. Rebuilding sucks, but hopefully we learned something from our mistakes. At the very least, I'm a much more cynical fan. And I appreciate Osborne more than ever. |

Hmmm...I thought Pederson's firing was a prelude to Callahan's firing. Why did Pederson (and not Callahan) become the scapegoat for Nebraska's poor start? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Help an outsider out...
*edit* I guess Kid A answered my question. Solich's firing was pretty moronic, but I still got the impression that Pederson felt heat from the Nebraska boosters to make that move... Last edited by Crushaholic; 10-16-2007 at 03:55 PM.. |

Looks like the Osborne speculation is coming true. http://www.ketv.com/sports/14353545/detail.html
Three scenarios I see at the moment: Callys stays with a new (younger, more energetic) Defensive Coordinator - I'm ok with Cally leaves and they bring in someone like Pelini or Mike Leach - I'm ok with Cally leaves and we bring in Turner Gill and a staff of ex-huskers - This would suck. The plot thickins.....lol |

Cally leaves and they bring in someone like Pelini or Mike Leach - I'm ok with If Miles goes to Michigan, which with Michigan winning now looks less likely now, the LSU job is Pelini's if he wants it. Cally leaves and we bring in Turner Gill and a staff of ex-huskers - This would suck. Where is Turner Gill coaching? Buffalo? Temple? Turner Gill is coaching Buffalo and beat Solich's Ohio team pretty soundly last week. Another name out there is Jim Leavitt..... |

I think you guys are counting out Gill way to fast. He runs the a college WCO. He isn't a option player anymore. Plus if you take a look at what he has done so far its not all that bad. 3-4 in the first 7 games. Yeah that sucks but....
06-2 wins total 05-1 win 04-2 wins 03-1 win 02-1 win I would agree that there are better coaches out there but I think Gill has as much of a chance to improve us as anyone at this point. Its clear that he can get more out of lesser talent. |

Any truth to the rumor that Blaine Gabbert will be visiting Columbia this weekend?

hot rumor on multiple boards, with posters claiming credible sources- Callahan out as soon as tonight, along with several staff members (Coz, Elmo, etc.) and Charlie McBride brought in as interim HC. Watson may stay as OC while Bill Busch stays as DC. Similar rumors have been floating around the last couple days. This would be a crazy (and quick) turn of events if true. Honestly, I'm starting to really feel bad for the players. This has to be confusing and stressful as hell. |

well, McBride has gone on the radio and denied it completely. These internet rumors are so retarded. I'm not believing (or reporting) anything until it is official.

Um, so scratch that. I think today removed any chance of him being back. Probably our most winnable game, and, well you saw the score.

Little birdy has told me after the NU/CU game they will name Pelini head coach, Rathman Off. Coor, Mike Stoops(if fired at Ariz) or Mike Sanders as Def. Coor, and Scott Frost as DB coach.

I highly doubt that anyone could know for sure that Pelini will 1) take the job or 2) put together that staff. If it were to happen, however, I'd be more than happy. Pelini and Mike Stoops together would be great on the defensive side. Mike Sanders would be a fan favorite pick as well.

I'm curious what you guys think about what's going on with your recruiting class now?
Gabbert's father said they've canceled their official to Lincoln and won't be coming. Gray looks like he's going to South Bend. Mohler and Givens are both visiting Boulder and looking around at others, and I'm sure there are more that I don't know about. |

It's going to fall apart. That's about all there is to it. Sad to see happen (especially Gabbert and Gray) but what can you do. Gray said in an interview he was committed more to the staff than the university. And there is no question this staff HAS to go. We've had really good recruiting classes every year Cally has been here, and where are we now? Probably the worst season in the last half century of Nebraska football. We have to willing to sacrifice a top 20 recruiting class this year to get a staff that can competently coach in place.
I do hope that whoever comes in can salvage at least some of the class, though. Especially some of our highly touted o-linemen. I'd also like to think if a respected defensive coach, like Pelini, comes in we might steal a top notch defensive recruit or two late in the game. |

Getting that Neuheisel vibe while reading about your recruits Kid... Buffs fans know that horrible feeling with lost recruits. Ugh.

Corey Redding, Troy Polamalu, and Logan Mankins are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. IIRC, Redding was the top defensive player in the country that year. Not a fun time for any team that happens to.
So with Gabbart leaving, does anyone's opinion of him change? I don't know how anyone deserves a 5 star rating when he gets benched during his senior year, regardless of their ceiling. |

actually some good recruiting news. The top JUCO prospect in the nation, defensive end Simi Kuli just committed to Nebraska...after talking to Tom Osborne. Kuli has said it doesn't matter to him who the coaching staff is, as long as he plays at Nebraska.
He might be the exception to the rule, but it is good to hear some people thinking like that. It will be important to get kids who are committed to the university as a whole, not just a west coast offense coach who might help their NFL chances. |
