Zelda? Did that. Final Fantasy(1-7)? Did that. I will agree the later ones, although 10 was alright, kinda was a sellout. MGS? Questionable really IMO. The story aspect can not be touched though. Halo? Yes, and no. FPS were already there, and better on the PC. Half-Life for example. The thing they revolutionized though was online play for consoles. Starcraft, like you pointed out, really sparked the RTS movement. Sure, there were others, but Starcraft was amazing. World of Warcraft is another game. Go ahead and talk down about it, and the people who play it, but it has turned out to be the greatest MMORPG ever and its Burning Crusade expansion had the best 1st day of sales ever, which Halo 3 probably will break. To me, Halo 1 would be on the list of greatest games in gaming history because of the "revolution" it sparked. Now if a game doesn't have an online component to it, its looked down upon. So, Halo 1 deserves to be up there. Halo 2 and Halo 3? I don't really think so. Although I never though the game was spectacular, Halo 1 deserves to be up there, but I wouldn't say at the #1 spot. And besides, like you said, its all based on opinion and everybody's list will be different. For single games, I'd have Zelda, FF1, MGS, World of Warcraft and Halo 1 in my top 5. Sure, someone else might have the same games, but in different orders. I highly doubt anyone here would have the same list of games. |

I think Halo is revolutionary simply because of the fact of what it has done with FPS's on the console. Before Halo there was Golden Eye and Perfect Dark (Both AMAZING games btw), but the FPS really wasn't a huge genre on the console yet. After Halo comes however, the FPS genre fricken EXPLODES on the console and everyone is trying to copy the Halo formula and their use of the dual analog sticks. Then it snowballs big time when Xbox Live happens and the multiplayer scene explodes with Halo 2.

1.) Recharging (Shield) Health Bar - now seen in most FPS. 2.) Grenade throwing w/o switching weapons - now seen in most FPS. 3.) Open Level design in a FPS - Now in many FPS. Until Halo, the best shooters were all corridor based. The games felt linear and AI generally non-impressive. Halo changed this with wide open level design and Artificial intelligence smart enough to flank you. Call of Duty expanded on this, and now the entire Genre uses it. Until Halo, recharging health was too unrealistic and illogical, now its a must in shooters. Until Halo, grenade rushing + gun butting was not practical in most shooters, not anymore. Halo did all those things FIRST, and really was the first successful console shooter since Goldeneye. So yes, it was a great game. Halo 2 came out 3 years later and was a lot less revolutionary but did make two good contributions to gaming. However, the big difference between Halo 1 and Halo 2, is that Halo 1 introduced major gameplay elements to the industry whereas Halo 2's only real contribution was matchmaking. 1.) Automated Matchmaking System that works for consoles and is as fluid as any PC setup with lists and filters. You can now find this setup on some big name games like Supreme Commander. 2.) To a much lesser degree; Vehicular Hijacking. You still can't find this in any other shooter but Halo was indeed first to come up with this, and it was cool as hell. Now that Halo 3 is out, the FPS genre has matured to a point, where you can't really expect anything revolutionary. However, that doesn't mean the game won't be good. It will have: 1.) Automated saved replays 2.) Well integrated map editing tools and play a game while the map is being edited. I think the only mind blowing game - safe to say was the original. As for the greatest title ever, in my opinion: Ninja Gaiden (Black) - Xbox
For me, I don't care if a game is revolutionary, only if its fun. And NGB was hands down the most fun I've ever had with a videogame. |

Bioshock is crap. Pretty graphics and a rip off of Deus Ex's enhancement system but no where NEAR as fun as Deus Ex. ****ty bad guys, and a very gay artistic style to the game. For an underwater game, the water was poorly done comparitively, Halo 3's water is fantastic and dynamic.

I've played some of Bioshock and was very impressed by the Randish philosophies and neat little Half Life 2ish gameplay. Not quite revolutionary like people say but sure was fun. You really can't say it ripped off Dues Ex, because all they did was put RPG elements into a shooter, since then lots of games have done and will do that. Crysis for example will allow you some customization and the like. Though I agree, Bioshock is the furthest thing from a "real" FPS, thats the whole point. On the other hand, as a major Halo fan, I bought Crackdown to play the H3 beta and ended up playing more Gears of War multiplayer b/c it was so underwhelming to me. Don't know, its really lost its luster for me, H3 feels like Counter strike source to be perfectly honest. No longer have an xbox so I'd have to wait to play the full game @ a friends house, but my impressions were that the game did not graphically look up to par with other big budget games.
