Are you saying you want to hook up your PC to your TV? or to a monitor?

Hook it up DVI. You may not notice it if you dont have anything in HD on your computer but DVI is essentially HDMI without the sound data transmitted.

My monitor came with the option to plug in via DVI, VGA or USB. It mostly wont matter to you Sassy.

I guess I'll just try it out then...
I hate to take down the old pc in case I can't get the new one to work...oh well, guess I could always set up the old one upstairs until I get the new one working...I won't get rid of MSN until I get the new one working anyway...

Alec knows ... might as well go DVI, as long as its backwards compatible. Is it Alec?

VGA is old.

DVI is new. (you want this)

Your motherboard/monitor/video card should have come with both types of connectors, and a VGA-to-DVI adapter if you need it.

It will make zero difference in setting anything up or how anything runs. It's analog vs. digital. Just hook it up like normal using the DVI connections. Easy as pie.

It doesn't look like there's an adaptor...just the cord for VGA (blue ends) and the in/out (green ends). Plus, the electrical cord.Hmmm....in other words, I'm guessing the DVI cord is different and comes separate?

it should have come with your monitor if it has dvi. otherwise you'll have to purchase one.

the connection looks like this (should be on the back of your computer (video card))

and the adapter looks like this (vga-to-dvi)

does your monitor have the dvi connection at the back? not the cord, but where the cord would plug in?

and do you see a similar connection point on the back of your computer?

Sassy, you have to look at your video card. If it is the normal monitor input thats VGA, otherwise it will be white (not blue) where you plug it in and have a bunch of slots instead of pins.

Its not frustrating. Just plug it in.

Video card? I'm telling you...I don't have a clue.
I got my other one hooked up by myself...but that was years ago.
Where the cord is plugged into the monitor and there is a place on the pc that is blue.

I'm not seeing the place for the DVI on the back of the tower.

OK Sassy, let me start simply.

Your video card is a piece of equipment on the inside of your computer. It has a place in the back of the computer that your monitor plugs into. Where you plug the monitor into the back of the computer, you have to look at that connection. If its blue, its a standard VGA plug in. If its white, its DVI.

If your monitor is one of the flat panels it should also have a USB connection wherre you can plug your monitor in via a USB slot. Below is an image of a video card that has both AND an S-Video input.

S-Video out works great for a TV.

Back in '99, I had a 25' S-Video cable and I would sit on my couch with a wireless keyboard and mouse, surfing the net on my 36" Sony ...

Ok...don't have that cord...but there is that white plug to plug one in on the back of the monitor.

But it doesn't look like there is a place to plug in for DVI on the back of the PC.

Dang...I'd post pics...but I already unhooked the printer to this pc.

That just means that your monitor is compatible with DVI but you need a Video Card also compatible.

And Buff, plug it in DVI if you have it. Its a better signal and VGA is being phased out anyway.
