Default Ocean of Fear on Tonight 9 EST

If anyone is looking for something to watch tonight, I highly recommend this Discovery Channel special! It's the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.

---------------------------------------------------------

Narrated by Richard Dreyfuss, who memorably played Matt Hooper in Jaws, watch the gripping story of the USS Indianapolis, sunk by Japanese torpedoes in the Philippine Sea on the night of July 30, 1945. Of the 1,196-man crew, about 900 sailors, many maimed and burned, were plunged into the water ... and floated helplessly for four days, beset by hunger, driven mad by thirst and menaced by hundreds of sharks. Assisted by George Burgess, America's foremost investigator of shark attacks, Ocean of Fear examines why the sharks attacked the way they did, and investigates the survival strategies of the men in the water, including those who fought the sharks. Survivors recall their ordeal on camera and remarkable reconstructions, filmed with real sharks, reveal the drama from both the sharks' and humans' perspectives.

First I ever heard about this was in the movie Jaws when Robert Shaw said he was there. Pretty interesting stuff. I have read up on it a lot since then.

Just a horrible thing to live through....if you lived.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have been looking forward to this show. It is truly a real ****ed-up story, and to think they just got gone dropping off the "meat and potatoes" for the Hiroshima bomb. Then the Navy basically forgets about them for about four days. Thats a nice thank you for just completing a top-secret mission.

Pretty much the only channel I watch is Discovery unless a good game is on. I love deadliest catch and Man vs.the wild (survivor man is just as good but boring as hell). I have been locked in on the first day of shark week all day just had to bump it to espn a few times for updates on the nextel race.

Pretty sobering documentary.

Did Dreyfuss just say 4 people are killed a year by sharks and 40 million sharks are killed each year?

Yeah he said that, but 40 million sharks a year just sounds way to high. I am not a conservationist but if we are killing that many sharks than man kind needs to get a grip. Many sharks will leave man alone.

Watched it, but just actually read that book a few weeks ago, so there was nothing shocking for me. Cool to see the rescue footage though. Richard Dreyfuss annoys the hell out of me though

Thats just sad to me. What really get me going is that we kill sharks out of fear and Jaws actually contributed to that. Don't get me wrong I am no way a PETA member and I love meat. But to kill an animal that serves a purpose out of fear is just plain stupid.

I also watched a thing on bull sharks.

Most dangerous shark in the world.

They swim up the Mississippi river and cause hell on swimmers.
