I'm getting a quote here for 6 grand, for a 3 ton Bryant system, installed and wanted to see how that compares.

Just built a new house and that seems about right if it is the 80% efficiency with freon. I recommend upgrading to a more efficient (90%) with puron if your going to spend the money on a new one right now though. Mine has been simply awesome the last month and cut my gas and electric bills despite doubling my square footage.

I just got 3 ton Trane system that fits in with my Trane furnace. Cost was about 6000, but I got a chunk of money back for energy savings. There is a Federal tax break for it as well. It has a heat pump with it, so it is expected to save me some dough this winter on gas. Check out the rebates and tax break before you deal, and look for the right kind of financing.
Good system and works great. |

I'm in the business and that doesn't sound bad...always get 3 bids IMO, that way you know what's a good ballpark figure. Installation is more important than the equipment. If your ductwork sucks, then new install won't work any better.

The guy is my father's friend.
I didn't think he was screwing me, but he didn't seem like he was hooking me up either. My old stuff was Carrier and old as hell, never gave me much trouble. Bryant is essentially the same as Carrier from what I understand. |

I am also in the business, and while that quote doesn't seem excessive, it doesn't sound great to me either. Again, make sure you get some other quotes to go along with it. Pretty much all of the manufacturers are the same. Another good line that would be probably cheaper than Bryant would be Tempstar or Comfortmaker. They both offer 93% efficient furnaces as well as the efficent a/c condensors.

The guy I was dealing with also sold Tappan. I ended up going with that. It was 900 bucks cheaper and had double the warranty.

saw your pics on hvactalk, Bill....is that a 20x8 return drop going down to your 20x25 filter??...your numbers appeared to reveal a 3 ton system...I'd get someone that makes your duct work better if my eyes werent deceiving me. BTW, those guys play hardball on DIY questions and advice so I won't be too helpful there but feel free to PM me for suggestions on what I saw.

It's indeed a 20 X 8 return drop.
He's cutting in another return from the room adjacent to the furnace on the other side and putting in a little grill filter. Not optimal, I know, but I don't have a lot of cash to spend on tinwork. It's my family room, which gets cold as hell in the summer because it doesnt return any air. |

it better be a bigger filter grille my friend....20x8 is around 600 cfm...you need 1200 for a 3 ton
Edit...and be prepared for your family room getting a lot more return noise. Last edited by Moon§hiner; 07-25-2007 at 08:57 PM.. |

That's the strange thing. There's a 24x6 return register in the family room, not cut in? He's cutting that register in, but if you're looking at those pictures it's imediately to the right of the furnace on the bottom. There's no real way to get it fed to the left side, so he's going to cut it in on the right and put a register return filter.

all I can tell you is that is you were a friend, customer or even a Raider fan I'd say unless your heat exchanger has failed, you don't need a new furnace...maybe a new coil.....possibly a new a/c depending on how obnoxious of a Raider fan you were...but you already have a 90 pct. furnace...If I were looking at saving bucks I'd keep the furnace and fix the ductwork....have you even had someone come out to find out where the water leak was indeed coming from

The water fried a circuit board on the furnace, I have the blower motor hot wired to continuous run. The board is 600 bucks. The rest of the thing is over 20 years old. I'm just cutting my loses. I had a contract with PSEG (the power company) where they had to fix this thing when it broke for 12 bucks a month. But they wont cover that board because the condensation pan rotted out and shorted it. Last edited by Raider Bill; 07-25-2007 at 09:21 PM.. |

A swamp cooler makes moisture in the house and lowers the temperature in drier climates...a refrigerant based air conditioner removes humidity...swamp coolers work cheaper and almost as effecient in dry climates.

find another tech Bill...I have yet to see a board cost 600 bucks...first find the leak that made the board fry, then find someone that will replace the board in a half an hour while charging 150 or so for the parts...I have a lady friend in Union Beach and she tells me costs and I threaten to move there if it weren't for the traffic...heh

I'm not sure what else is wrong with it. The smoked circuit board is obvious. What if he replaces that, and it's still ****ed up?
I never found out how much the board actually cost. I work for Carrier Transicold Similar relay boards for reefers cost 5-6 hundred bucks. The furnace is the cheapest part of this whole deal, it didnt make much sense to not have a matched system. Every house in my neighborhood like mine, that I've ever been in has the same exact ductwork. It must not be that big of an issue. Last edited by Raider Bill; 07-25-2007 at 09:48 PM.. |

No problem. I was just looking at this contract/estimate and after the utility company rebate the furnace only costs 800 bucks.

I installed a new Bryant AC and gas fired furnace last fall for less than $5,000. The units I installed qualified for Federal tax credits.
