I'll finish off my starting frontline with not only a worthy selection, but a homer pick as well.

It's hard to believe that nobody has selected the NBA's first superstar and first dominant center: George Mikan.

At 11:42 MST, I have chosen to give the rock to one player suited to both score and pass very well. Call him a SF, call him a PG, call him a Point-Foward, call him whatever you want.
I prefer King James. ![]() Already averaging 27 PPG, 7 RPG, and 6 APG at the tender age of 22, he will only continue to improve, and can already take over games, as seen in the jaw-dropping 48 points he poured in against the Pistons in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Runnin' & Gunnin' PG - LeBron James SG - Clyde Drexler SF - PF - C - Shaquille O'Neal Freak6 is now on the clock! |

Here's the inevitable:
The Current NBA Most Valuable Player: DIRK NOWITZKI ![]() ![]() Nowitzki has revolutionized the PF position, and simultaneously opened the door for foreign players to assume starring roles on NBA teams. It's a phenomenon akin to an American soccer player showing up in Europe and becoming a world superstar. Nowitzki has been the key element in the turning around of a Dallas franchise that was a perennial lottery team. Since Dirk's arrival, he has led the Mavericks to the playoffs 7 out of his 9 seasons including a trip to the NBA Finals. During that stretch in the playoffs, he displayed the type of performances that very few have achieved before him, including a 50 point game to put his team ahead in the second half of the 2005-2006 Conference Finals and a legendary performance in game 7 of the classic Mavs/Spurs tilt. Nowitzki has become the model for a whole new type of player: the versatile, scoring, elbow-oriented big. Dirk is quite possibly the greatest big man shooter of all-time. Dirk is the only player in NBA history to have both blocked 100 shots and made 150 three pointers. Dirk is the reigning NBA MVP. Dirk has been a 7-time All-NBA selection. Dirk has been a 6-time all-star, and the only European player to ever start an all-star game. Dirk is the only player to win the MVP Award to have never played in a US preparatory school or college. Dirk has joined Rick Barry and Larry Bird as the only players in NBA history to score 26+ points and shoot 90% FT in a season. Became the second player in NBA history to lead the league in Win Shares for three consecutive seasons (the only other was Micheal Jordan). From Wikipedia: Named MVP and was the leading scorer of the 2002 Basketball World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, winning the bronze medal with the German national team Named MVP and was the leading scorer of the 2005 European Championship, winning the silver medal with the German national team Named FIBA European Basketball Player of the Year in 2005. Named European Basketball Player of the Year by Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport for five years in a row: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 Runner-up in the 2005 edition of Germany's Athlete of the Year Award (Sportler des Jahres) He is the tallest NBA player to win the 3-point shootout at 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m). |

As much as we hammer Dirk on this board, llama is putting him at SF. Who in the history of the game could deal with a 7-footer who could rain 3's at the SF position? Obviously, some legends have been passed up, and they were great, and had phenomenal career stats. MVPs, All-Star games galore. But IMO some of these kids could play with them right now. |

LeBron is interesting, because he has no historical comparison. He's somewhere in-between Magic Johnson, Charles Oakley (strength), and Dominique Wilkins and could eventually end up the best player ever, but he doesnt have the resume quite yet. I am pretty confident that although LeBron had a disappointing showing in the finals, and undoubtedly will have some disappointments along the way, that he will ultimately in his prime be a completely unique and unstoppable force. |

OK, the pick is in! Those Cheap Bastards select:
Bob Pettit, PF/C, Milwaukee Hawks Bob Pettit, 6'9", 230 lbs Honors: Elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1970); NBA champion (1958); NBA MVP (1956, '59); 10-time All-NBA First Team (1955-64); All-NBA second team (1965); Rookie of the Year (1955); One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996). G FG% FT% Rebs RPG Asts APG Pts PPG 792 .436 .761 12,849 16.2 2,369 3.0 20,880 26.4 Points per game all time -- 6th Rebounds per game -- 3rd Blocks and steals were not recorded during his playing time, but he had a lot of those too! Quotes: After Pettit's playing days had ended, rival Bill Russell offered this tribute: "Bob made 'second effort' a part of the sport's vocabulary. He kept coming at you more than any man in the game. He was always battling for position, fighting you off the boards." Pettit was 32 years old at the end of the 1964-65 campaign, and he decided to call it quits. He retired having accumulated 20,880 points(26.4 ppg), the most ever scored in the NBA at that time, and his 12,849 rebounds ranked him second all-time. He never averaged fewer than 20 points, nor did he miss an All-Star Game in any of his 11 seasons. His rebounding totals were no less impressive: he never fell below 10 rebounds per game for a season and his career average was 16.2 -- still third best in league history behind Wilt Chamberlain and Russell. |

As long as the guy right after Freak didn't want AI, and it doesn't look like he did since he chose Pettit, it's fine by me if he changes. I don't think anybody would object.

I don't object at all.
Iverson for Parrish. So let it be written, so let it be done. Iverson was a consideration, but I just couldn't pass up a low presence post player who could score, rebound, and get after it defensively. Now Stockton has someone to pick and roll with! ![]() |
