Nowitzki Admits Getting Tense in Pressure Situations

Dallas Mavericks all-star forward Dirk Nowitzki, who is still hearing criticism for his meltdown during a 129-127 double-overtime loss to Phoenix last week, admitted yesterday that he gets tight during pressure situations.

"I think everybody who says they don't get tense, they're lying," Nowitzki said following practice at Dodge Fitness Center on the campus of Columbia University, where the Mavericks were preparing for the Knicks tonight.

"It's big games. You got to find ways to stay loose and relax. I've been doing a decent job of not letting the pressure get to me (YEA THE **** RIGHT YOU HAVE...HAHAHAHAHA) and still enjoying the moment."

You think Michael Jordan was "tense" at the end of games, Dirk? Do you really believe that? Do you really believe that Larry Bird was pissing his leg at the free throw line? Give us all a break. I love the way that Boston fans ooh and ahh at Dirk when he shoots. When he hits a high-arching jupshot you can feel the longing eyes looking on from the stands in reminiscience. You can hear respect and awe in their gasps when he pulls up to shoot. You can almost hear forlorn Celticfan say "I remember when we had a player like that, and a team almost that good."

It's particularly disheartening to Celticfan when Dirk coasts through the game only to decide in the fourth quarter that he's going to quit messing around with their little team and pound them into submission by dominating the game and closing them out. Just like he did against so many teams in the past. Just like their players used to do. So, what can they do but live vicariously through the Big German's outfit while he visits their floor? Oh, a Celticfan can dream, cant she?

I'd say it was the free throw to tie it with the Spurs in Game 7 of last year's playoffs. I seem to recall that one going in.

It was that shot, and he does make them most of the time. But in this case ur right, it is magnified because he went up against his old buddy Nash and it was in OT, if it happend on any other game we wouldn't even be here talking about this.

Dirk is easily the more accomplished player. If we are talking about clutch performance and criticism, shouldnt we point out that Nash has never been to the Finals? Has there ever been a two-time MVP without a finals appearance? Has there ever been a three-time MVP without a championship?

So, Nash has been blessed with two all-stars, a coach of the year, a 6th man of the year (Diaw), a future 6th man of the year (Barbosa), and hasnt even made it to the finals? Talk about choking.

Llama was nowhere to be found other than lurking these threads after Dirks legendary classic in Dirk fasion missed FT with game on the line.

Funny how Llama goes into hiding and avoids the critcism of his gay love child Dirk. I wonder if when he goes into hiding if he locks himself in a room with his FatHead Dirk poster or if he just wears his Dirk jersey as he pulls his goalie. I'll go so far as to say this: Michael Jordan had he played in the era when Dr J, Nique, Bird, Johnson, Jabaar were all in their primes would not be considered the best player ever, but just some guy.

The 1970s and 1980s of basketball were as good as you will ever see it in the NBA.

0 Championships for the Bulls and Jordan had he played in that era.

Meanwhile, 0 Championships and counting for Nowitzki.

Dirk is a great player. Both he and Jordan and Bird are correct. EVERYONE gets tense, it is a physiological response and is unavoidable. The great players embrace that tension and use it to come up clutch.

I haven't seen any pattern to suggest that Nowitzki is a choker in those moments. He's not batting 1.000, but neither is anyone else.

Comparing the Chief to Jermaine O'neal doesn't even do Parish justice. Put the Chief in his prime in today's game and he is the 2nd best center in the league right now.

Jason Terry, Stackhouse, Howard are not slouches. Although I wonder who was comparable to LeBron on the 86 Celtics? No one on that team was athletic as him.
