Default Modest Mouse

Any Modest Mouse fans out there. I just can't seem to get enough of this band. I've never seen them live, but if they ever make it to my neck of the woods, I don't know how I could miss them. I'd bet that they put on a wild show.

It looks like they're touring Australia right now, so I might be out of luck for awhile.

It's a funny story how I heard of them. I picked up a hitch hiker, and he was raving about them while we headed to our destination. I figured I'd pick up their latest album and loved it. I then went back and found out they have several more albums. I loved them too. Then after listening to them for awhile, it kind of dawns on me that picking up a hitch-hiker and discovering them is sort of serendipitous to their whole style of music... as though it's a perfect world. Hard to explain unless you know their stuff.

Anyway, if you haven't heard Modest Mouse but like challenging music, check them out, and stick with it for a few listens. It's definitely what I'd call "mindset music." Hardly anyone will "get" them on the first time through the album... but the more you listen the more you get the nuances and eventually, if you're like me, fall into lasting love with the sound.

Modest Mouse has a new album titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank coming sometime this year. You can listen to the first single "Dashboard" on modestmousemusic.com I can't wait to hear the entire album. TJ, your description of their music is dead on for me as well. I kind of re-discovered them a couple months ago and have been listening to them a lot since.

I read that Johnny Marr, the great ex-guitarist of The Smiths, has joined the band for the new album. All the more reason to be excited about the new release.

Unless you made it in the last 90 minutes, it's a ticket broker for you!

Strange choice and sequencing of cities .... you'd think they'd come up here to Seattle anyway. The Police Reunion Tour starts in Vancouver BC in May .... so I'm guessing they'll be in Seattle shortly thereafter.

I've been listening to them for several years, and when i was homeless - we knew a guy that had a "governors card" - he let us use it to buy tickets half off. So we sold candles to make up the money - and i got to see them at bumpershoot.

I knew they were coming to the Crystal Ballroom in March. I just couldn't remember exactly when.

TJ, check out Craigslist Tickets in Portland...I think I saw several on there over the past few weeks when I was looking for Nickelback tickets!

MM is a good band, but they kinda suck live from what I've seen on SNL and Leno and stuff.

Agreed. I saw them play with Flaming Lips, De La Soul and Cake, and Modest Mouse was far and away the most boring performance of the four. The music was good but they didn't engage the crowd at all, while De La Soul ran around the got everybody into it and the Lips pulled of one of their routine spectacles.

By the way, Taco, did that album work out for you?

I just can't get into Modest Mouse... but I can appreciate how you feel about them. I'm that way with Spoon.... at least with the "Girls Can Tell" album.

I love that song "I Turn My Camera Off." It's from the Gimme Fiction album. That is a damn funky tune.

Good to know that you put actually hard earned money on shelter and food. Oh wait, it was for a two hour concert. Good move. Glad i didnt hand you a buck during that time. I feel sorry for the people who had to stand next to you dirty, smelly homeless guys. At least you got room to slam dance. I think I am totally missing the type of music with Modest Mouse. Great music. If you like them, check out the Shins and the song THE FUNERAL by Band of Horses. Also, Arcade Fire kicks ass and they are even canadians.

Good to see you cant read either. I said it is nice to see your hard earned money went to shelter and food. What part did I say that you begged for it. My question is your decision to blow your money on a concert while you were homeless. But at least you didnt question me on my opinion that you stunk like a homeless guy at the concert.

whatever that means. Your choice of actually earning hard earned money on a freaking concert while slumming on the streets showed another great choice in life at that time. Critizing you has nothing to do with being white. Are you trying to blame whitey on your early destruction in life? Good wording.

Maybe seeing Modest Mouse was worth a night on the street for Josh. Who are you to judge? I'd spend a night or two on skid row if I got a chance to see Neutral Milk Hotel on the stage.

You just don't get it man. Tell me, how far does $40 day get you. If i'm already sleeping in the park, what's $5-10 to go and have a few hours that i enjoy. Oh wait, i forgot people like you treated people like me - as a second class. I'll tell you this - don't ever be at the same tailgate i'd be at. I'd bust you in the teeth on principle alone. If you understood what that meant (Might white of you) - you'd get the humor in it..... but then again - i don't expect a middle class suburbanite to understand things. Oh well - life has a funny way of working itself out. Good luck.
