What kind of amp do you have? Could be a bad plug or a bad cable. I'd try plugging a different guitar with a different cable into the amp to rule out the amp.

I tried two cables and he only has the one guitar.

Does the amp make any kind of sound when you turn it on? If so, I'd guess a bad connection plug either on the guitar or the amp. If not, it could be a blown amp. Either way, I'd take it into the shop to have them look at it. And if nothing else, you could test the guitar on an amp at the shop to rule out the guitar.

1) Turn the amp on and volume up a little
2) Plug the cord into the amp, but unplug it from the guitar
3) Touch and release in succession around the metal end of the cord - you should hear a deep hum start and stop.

If you do NOT hear the hum start and stop, it's your cord or amp (you ruled out cord)
If you DO hear the hum start and stop, the problem is your guitar. If so:

4) Buy my guitar: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/264735111.html
