I grew up hunting, but have not done it in years. The last gun I bought was a 6mm to hunt antelope. Loved shooting that gun. Very flat trajectory and little kick.

I never saw the need for a hand gun until I was kayaking/camping on the Colorado between State Bridge and Dotsero. Got up in the morning and there was a rattler about ten feet from my tent. I hate snakes so I bought a 22 mag revolver and snake shot. Later the same year I took a 357 S&W as colleteral for a personal loan to an employee, who of course never paid me back. I had it for about ten years, wanting to be very careful who I sold it to. Finally sold it to a friend who is former Army Intelligence and Secret Service.

I still have the hunting rifles and three collectable guns. A 1930's Browning shotgun that belonged to my grandfather, a Browning Citori that was one of the last made in Belgium and an early 1900's gallery gun - a 22 pump they used in carnivals when they used real bullets.
one of my cousins got me into black powder shooting ... I cant stress enough on the importance on watching real close the amount of black powder you use to load

I found the 6mm was a great "starter" rifle for kids. Actually it was my first rifle and I used it for deer. I'll hold onto it for my son one day. Although the 257 Roberts also fits that bill.

I have a 300WSM also Hotrod....You are going to love it but my guess is your probably already do.

I may just have to pull her out today and knock a hole in the pond. The fish need to breath ya know!

Hey wait a second...why is this in off topics all of a sudden. Weren't we in offseason mode?

Sewell I think anyone that is atleast 30 years or more old has a gun gone bad story. I had a friend knock his head off by accident. I've also had friends fall off cliffs, get run over, stabbed, you name it.

To me there is simply no greater joy than walking the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains with the anticipation of even seeing a wild elk in the distance. It's not even about shooting one to me. I'd have to say it's probably a better rush than being apart of the 12th man in a 4th quarter snowy game @ Mile High and there isn't a whole lot in life that I enjoy that much.

My whole point is this and there is no simple solution to the issue: guns are highly available in the US and because of that, IN MY OPINION, there is a much higher rate of violent crime in this country. Just because it's part of our culture to rightfully own a gun doesn't make it right. Just look at the first page of this thread, a discussion on the merits of different guns and their prowess in killing PEOPLE.

I understand that hunting is a safe (for the most part) and recreational activity that involves the use of guns. I just wish there was a simple solution to eliminate or severely diminish the availability of assault rifles and handguns to the general public. I think there are ways of doing that.

I think it's a circular issue that will never be resolved until stricter (is that a word) regulations on firearms are put in place. The reason people own hand guns and assault rifles is because they are concerned for the safety of their family and property because of the high probability that someone trying to rob them will have a gun too. The only way to mitigate this problem is strict gun enforcement and lessening the availability of guns to the general public.

The problem is that people can't even have a civil discussion about it...just look at the posts in response to mine...somehow I'm a "p***Y" and un-"merican" because I have a differing viewpoint. This issue will never be resolved because of people like this who jump to conclusions and outright dismiss any alternative opinion offered.

EDIT: I should say their are people like this on both sides of the coin. BTW, my father is a proud NRA member but has never called me a "p***Y", and we can certainly have an intelligent discussion about the issue
One thing that I think you have to keep in mind, is that most people who intend on using a firearm in a crime are not going to obtain through legal methods because they either can't or don't want to leave a paper trail.

In my opinion, if you start limiting the right of people to purchase and carry firearms, then you are just disarming the law abiding public. If Joe Crackhead wants to use his gun to kill some gas station attendant, he's generally not gonna give a rat's behind that it's illegal for him to have that gun.

I gotta admit, I'm pretty disappointed that this thread was put on the off-topics forum, especially when it's offseason mode and lots of other off topic stuff is on the main board.

Get use to it. Depending on who creates the thread, ie TJ, a lot of **** that should not be on the main forum stays while topics like this get moved.

We've repeatedly asked for some guidance on this but the mods and TJ have been predictably mute.

I'm not trying to make a stink here but I agree this was a good topic with alot of posters contributing. If who Tom Brady is banging can stay on the main page than so should this one. What the heck is going on here?

Who moved it? Atleast an explanation would be reasonable. What does off-season mode really mean then?

It seems to vary with who the mod is and if they like you or not.

The political issue of gun control should have placed this in the political forum, not the off-topic forum. However, that's just my opinion...

Well, this thread wasn't started with the intention of discussing gun control at all, but rather to share my interest with fellow gun owners. Unfortunately, it took a brief turn to the political side.

In scottsdale they are hungry enough to carry off your pets and even attack children. I see them all the time on the 101, TPC SDL, all over scottsdale road to tempe, and even have seen them on the 51 close to down town. Do they still have bountys on them in CO or Wyoming?

I guess the anti-American nancy boys work is done now that hes ruined this thread.

Meck- I've yet to even fire the new 300 WSM. I've been busy as heck lately. Heck I just got the scope mounted a while back. Also I'm to damn cheap/stuborn to pay to shoot at the local gun range. I think its like 150 bucks for a membership and I just cant see spending that when 9 months a year I can just drive out in the sticks and shoot for free. I am sure that once I get her cranked up she'll become my rifle of choice.

Everyone- Does anyone own a 45/70? I almost bought the alaskan guide 45/70. Little short sucker prolly kicks like a mule and the limited range swayed me towards the 300 WSM. Still thinking about picking one up thou incase I ever get attacked my a wild elephant or something

Anyone do their own reloading? Dad and me used to but he does not shoot as much as he used to. The price of the 300 WSM ammo is making me consider getting back into reloading. Anyone with experiance lately know if its cost/time effective?
