If the cheaps let him go i would seriously doubt there chances of being a quality club in the future (kinda of a oxy moron there) but hey, tony earned it and deserved it.

Exactly right because the goal for this franchise is to fill the seats. Old offense and defense. To think KC has the brains to reload in one year is totally ludicrous.

Just REMEMBER THIS, they had a top five offense for several years in a row and did you see a noticable improvement on the defensive side of things ? Hell no, not until the wheels were coming off the offense.

The freaking fans should have demanded KING CARL load up on defense for a one final run even at the expense of the future. Whens it's been 37 years and counting you do what is necessary period.

This franchise is incapable of common sense and as long as the fans roll into ARROWHEAD they won't change.

Nothing wrong with the guy wanting to finish his career there. He probably has a family and doesn't want to move them. He'll play the next 5 years and by that time, they will move Herm out and Gonzo will be their coach......lol

Gonzo will probably run for Gov and win by a land slide

Sounds like the over the hill gang the Redskins had a while back. When is the last time the Chiefs traded a player that had any trade value for picks or a stud player ala Champ Bailey? Was Priest a FA?? They'll wind up holding on to Green another year to and get Chump Change for him at 38 years old. It's like King Carls rest home. Hey at least the BBQ is good. Thats why Gonzo stayed.

Holy crap, this is hilarious.

Chiefs agree to extension for TE Gonzalez
Jay Glazer / FOXSports.com
Posted: 3 hours ago

The Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement on a contract extension with Tony Gonzalez, their future Hall Of Fame tight end.

Early Friday, Gonzalez told FOXSports.com that he was very close to a five-year extension to remain in Kansas City rather than hit the free agent market. The deal includes a stunning $17.750 million in guaranteed bonus money and averages more than $6.25 million per year — huge numbers for a tight end — with $18.750 million over the first three years.

In comparison, Chargers All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates had $10 million guaranteed in his deal.

"I'm happy that I get to end my career where it started," Gonzalez told FOXSports.com. "I really didn't know what was going to happen for a while but in the end the Chiefs really stepped up for me.

"I'm waiting for the contract right now to get the final version and I plan to sign it later today."

The lone sticking point earlier Thursday had been the structure of the deal — how much of the money is back-loaded and how much is put into the first three years of the contract. Agent Tom Condon and the Chiefs continued to hammer out terms of the deal in the wee hours of Friday morning, and eventually reached an agreement.

"I think he deserved this contract," Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson said. "Was it more than I wanted to pay? Sure. It always is. But he is, in my opinion, the best tight end in pro football. This allows him to be compensated as he deserves. There have been some rookies who came in and got bigger signing bonuses, but put it all together, Tony's been the highest-paid tight end in the NFL for several years, and this makes sure he will remain so."

Had Gonzalez not agreed to the new deal, he had until 4 p.m. EST Friday to send in a letter voiding his contract in order to become an unrestricted free agent. Earlier in the year he told FOXSports.com that he would void and hit the open market if they could not agree on a substantial raise from his previous deal.

Had he hit the open market he would have had serious interest from a handful of teams looking to upgrade their receiving corps. In addition, the Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards in their year-end meeting ensured Gonzalez that they would use his receiving skills even more next year than they had down the stretch this season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Now that is funny. Well they can probably kiss their chances of landing a solid free agent in off season goodbye. I can't believe they paid him that when he's entering the twilight of his career. Actually I can considering what Law got. He's good, but that's way too much money especially when he's going to be blocking most of the time. What a joke.

It's rediculous that they're paying him nearly double what Gates received, since Gates is still improving and hasn't reached his peak. TG has slowly been on the decline in the past couple of years.

Though I believe Gates will get a new contract in the next year or two, that doesn't ignore the fact that the Chiefs overpaid their declining TE.

I will say this though, it's always good to see star players finish out their careers with their team. Everytime I saw Seau in a Dolphins or Patriots uniform, it was just wrong.

what a horrible move. no tight end is worth that money. gonzo doesnt really fill seats. come on, who seriously goes to a football game to watch tony gonzalez. like if he left no one would show up. they are the biggest sheep in the country after the skins fans. they could have spent more wisely.

Hey smart guy, look at the part of the article you just posted. "With $18 million over the first three years." That is heavily front loaded. You know what that means? He will get most of his money in the first 3 years of his contract when he should still be playing at the same level. We can cut him after those three years with not much of a cap hit.

I hate to dissapoint you but this signing is not going to break the bank or put us in cap hell. It is a very manageable contract that can easily be voided after three years with minimal cap hit.

The Chiefs have a good amount of cap room this year and are only going to have more by the time free agency will start. Carl Peterson has said he will approach Trent Green about reworking his contract. Priest Holmes is likely to retire, freeing up more money. Will Shields could possibly retire, freeing up more money. The Chiefs are sure to cut or trade some of the high priced players who are not producing including Eric Hicks, Greg Wesley, Ryan Sims, Kendrell Bell, Dante Hall, etc.. Most of those guys are making well over a million. By cutting most of those guys we can get younger and save alot of cap room at the same time. None of them are important pieces on this team.

Again, sorry to dissapoint you Broncos fans. But this move did not break the bank and we have the money to spend in free agency.

"Gonzalez started 15 games in 2006, leading the club with 73 receptions for 900 yards with five touchdowns. "

I for one, am not in the least bit disappointed. Spin it how you want, that's mad bank for that type of production and he isn't getting any younger. Strictly a panic move after Gonzo hinted he may want to leave and hook up with a winner. Played Carl like a loose slot. Ka Ching.

Give Eddie some more money too. Those couple catches against Denver every season deserve to keep him in the number one wideout spot for a few more years.

Your an idiot, you know that? Are you guys too stupid to read the article you quoted? Most of that money is in the first three years of the contract. Oh my god!!! He is going to average around $6.25 million a year. Big freaking deal. That is probably only $2 million more than last year. That is the price tag for a playmaker. I could go on rants about how the Broncos overpaid for Javon Walker, a wide receiver who is only a couple of years younger than Gonzalez. Once he is 30 maybe the Broncos will be regretting paying him all of that money. At 29 by this Summer and very close to 30 I am sure the Broncos might be regretting paying Champ Bailey all of that money. I'm sure by 2010 the Broncos are going to be severely regretting a base salary of almost $10 million. By then Champ Bailey will be 32. Maybe the Broncos should worrry about overpaying for Gerrard Warren, a defensive tackle who just happens to SUCK!!!!!

Also, don't you think the Chiefs might just have a plan to upgrade there offensive line through the draft and free agency this year? Or, you must think they are just going to continue on with the same crappy offensive line. I would worry about your offensive line first before I worry about ours. Your crappy O-line made the Chiefs average D-line all look like pro bowlers back on Thanksgiving.

And in those three years when they are giving Tony "most of the money" he'll be 31. Then 32. Then 33. It's somehow significant. Or maybe it's just the aging process on other teams that really mean some secret something.

I guess gauranteed money upfront is way better than some of the backloaded salaries mentioned. I mean, no way any of those could ever be re-structured.

I love how this is supposed to be a point in case and he's the only one missing it.

I can't believe he did it again! you'd think after being ridiculed in signatures that he'd realize what he is saying. He once again is telling us that 30 comes after 29!

You mean like last season with the amazing Kyle Turley? No. No I do not expect Carl Peterson to have a plan. Check that. I expect him to have a very poor plan where he overpays for some more past their prime duds like Kendrell Bell, Tony G. and Ty Law. In fact I'm pretty certain that he's afraid of the draft and would rather fill the team with expensive re-treads than risk another Simms fiasco.

Gotta love those chef fans.

I wonder if the Donks will keep putting thier 60 million dollar corner on him with limited success.
