1. Anthony is a budding "superstar", and he will get much more media attention. He threw a slap that caused the thing to become chaotic, and there are several images that will be shown all over the place. The media can focus on Anthony because of his past, and this thing wont die for a couple of weeks. It's a big deal.

2. It went into the front row.

3. It happened right in the belly of the beast. The NY media will push this story hard and villainize Anthony.

4. It has the same chaotic NBA feel and close fan proximity as "the brawl", and has mainstream staying power because of the dramatic images that recall that event.

Points 1 and 3 sum it up perfectly.

I especially liked all time NBA super puss Isiah Thomas' take on the thing. Mind you...he watched some of the all time greatest muggings in NBA history when he was with the pistons. Not to mention he was a failure as the owner of the CBA, and is in a death match with matt millen as the worst gm in sports history.

"They were having their way with us," Thomas said. "I think J.R. Smith had just made one dunk when he reversed and spun in the air. And I think Mardy didn't want our home crowd to see that again. So he fouled him."

ESPN News might be demonizing Melo ... they're calling Melo's shot a "sucker punch." But isn't a sucker punch only when a guy is not looking ... this was not a sucker punch.

Also, they are playing up Isiah's angle that "Melo and Camby shouldda been on the bench" because they had a huge lead

I'm more of a Nuggets fan than Knicks fan, that's for sure. But I'm not a diehard. Not even a big NBA fan. But, here are some points.

#1. Melo shouldn't get suspended for more than 5 games. He didn't hit the dude that hard. It was, for the most part, on the court.
#2. It WAS a cheap shot. He wasn't engaged with the dude and reached around to get a sucker punch on the guy. Yes, he deserved to get "popped" in the head. But Melo made himself look like a little punk by throwing the cheapshot and then "bailing".

#3. Isiah IS right. Up by 20 points why would you have the league's leading scorer in the game? The Nuggets made this too easy for the Knicks to flip. They started the whole thing and 95% of America will hear the reasons behind the hard foul and they will take the Knicks side. Couple in a "sucker punch" by Melo and it's not good for the Nugs.

Not sure there is a clear cut definition of a sucker punch, but I'm pretty sure you can classify getting hit when you're not expecting a person to hit you as a "sucker punch" or a "cheap shot". He had to jump around the guy wearing a suit and the Knicks player was clearly not expecting to engage with Melo.

Sorry Nuggets fans, you're team is taking a lot of egg for this one and I'm not so sure they shouldn't be.

I'm suprised none of the Nugget fans are wondering why they're top players are in the game with 1:30 left to play up by 20 What's worse, the Knicks had taken out their best players (not too good to begin with I know) already and were conceding the game.

Actually, Alan Houston was playing that angle down. He said there is a point to be made for sure, but that isn't bad enough to lead to a all out brawl. No excuses... period.

Put it to you this way. If Karl pulls Melo and the Nuggets have a bunch of back-ups in there... I'm in complete favor of the Nugs in this incident. But, with Melo in there it looks like the Nugs are trying to run up the score and embarrass the Knicks... in MSG no less. I'm not suprised in the least by the reaction of the Knicks. Anybody that has ever played ball in any sport knows that losing can be embarassing. When somebody is rubbing it in it's that much worse.

1. I think he will get suspended more than 5. What does it matter how hard he hit him? Somebody was jawing at him and he had to show he was a man?Up to that point he hadn't really done much, was being escorted off the court and turned around and hit him. What a dumba**.

Terry's little jab was unexcuseable. Shaq got bounced by Stackhouse (think about that for a second...a two guard bounced Shaq onto his big 'ol butt) because he had been playing Bad Boys basketball, and had even elbowed Nowitzki intentionally and with malice in the jaw. Shaq was the dirtiest player in that series by a mile. Stackhouse's foul was within the flow and the tenor of the game. If the refs didnt want the finals to have that type of feel, they shouldnt have allowed Shaq to do the things that he was doing. If you can dish it out, you should be able to take it.


Stackhouse's image isnt a sparkling one, but he isnt Dallas' star player.

Terry on the other hand has a great reputation with fans. Comparing Anthony, who has had serious problems in the public arena, with Terry or Stackhouse isnt a good comparison.

Nobody condones Terry's nut jab. Stackhouse's play was a hard foul in the flow of the game.

I saw a video with sound from the Knicks broadcast. When Melo connected you could hear it clear as day. That was pretty darn loud. I bet he gets 10 games.
