Hdmi - The Orange Mane

Can someone explain to me HDMI and why I need to get it?

I'm thinking about getting this TV for X-mas (Sony 55" SXRD™ TV).

I have an Onkyo receiver (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...s=Receiver&p=i) with 6.1 speaker hookup, but it has no HDMI connection. Or is HDMI only for your DVD and HDTV video (Direct-TV or Cable) and not audio?

I currently have a POS Apex DVD player that I got from Walmart for 30 bucks so it doesn't have an HDMI conection either.

So if I get this TV along with High Def with Direct TV, do I need an HDMI connection from the HDTV receiver to the TV only?
