Question - Building a Computer
Okay, any computer geeks out there? I am building a computer, and have run into an issue. This is the third PC I have built, so it isn't like I have never done it before. But it also isn't like I have much experience when something goes wrong.
First, here is what I have:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Conroe 2.93GHz 4M sharing L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail
Motherboard: Intel BOXD975XBXLKR Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard
Memory: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
I don't think you'd need any other info to give me advice, but if you do, just ask. By the way, it's powered with a 500W power supply.
The problem is this. Everything is hooked up, and when I go to power it up, it comes on for maybe 3/4 of a second, and then it shuts right down. Any ideas? It seems like a short, but I don't really know how to try and find it. I am going to pull the motherboard out, put it on some cardboard, and try powering it up outside the case. Anything else anyone might suggest?
Thanks in advance.

Is there a fan on the CPU? Does it hook to the Mother-board? Does the CPU fan turn on?
The bios may check for the fan?
Is there a battery installed on the mother-board?
Have you tried turning it on w/o the RAM installed?
First things I would check......
