Smith suggests a relaxing atmosphere
By Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain News October 20, 2006 ENGLEWOOD - Receiver Rod Smith has a one-word solution for the offensive malaise affecting the Broncos - relax. "We really ain't having any fun," Smith said Thursday. "You look at the defensive coaches, all of them are smiling. And you look at the offensive coaches and they're all uptight. And us players, we get uptight because he's uptight. And we need to relax so he can relax. "And I really feel if we just go out and relax and have fun, man, we'll open our offense up. We'll let our coaches get some sleep for once." The Broncos are 24th in total offense, with the 30th-rated passing attack on pace for 2,317 yards. Javon Walker has accounted for 388 receiving yards. The rest of the team: 387. But the biggest issue is points, where the average per game is 12.4, tied for second worst in the league. The Broncos' title teams of the late 1990s had back-to-back scoring seasons of 472 and 501 points, setting an expectation level Smith believes might be out of whack with current NFL reality, where blowouts are rare. "We're trying to live up to how we've always been in the past and we've always been high-powered. That's our standard," he said. "At the same time, some of those things that we used to do back in the past we can't do now because it was a tremendous group of people, a collective effort that was going in the right direction." Smith insisted the key item that's lost is the team is winning. "Until the way we're playing starts costing us games," the situation can't be discussed in crisis levels, he said. The Broncos are 4-1, tied atop the AFC West heading into Sunday's game at Cleveland (1-4). "We're going to be fine," Smith said. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drm...079824,00.html |

Amen, the Voice of Reason. Calm down bronco nation....until it costs us a game, everyone just needs to chill. I remember the Orange Crush days where this wasn't unusual, get over it newbies and just be glad we are not the Faiders or the schitso Queifs!

Eh... That one is focused on Rod's life after football. I'm not interested in talking about Rod leaving.

![]() Hey...I'm relaxed... I have it all figured out...have field turf for a lawn...and plastic trees that never lose their leaves. I wish...I have to go slave over at the cottage all day picking up piles and piles of leaves before they get snowed under. Not only that, the damn pilot won't stay lit. I have to buy three radidator heaters or something or drain the water. No field turf for mock tommorow. Last edited by watermock; 10-20-2006 at 01:05 AM.. |

Think TJ was talking about your link not having much to do with this one other than what Rod is doing after football. He's been working hard like that in the off season since he got here. So again, your point? Newb.

The Mane is hostile lately, but I guess we've never been the kindest board. I blame Bob...
Anyway, It sounds like it is a combination of many things, and one of those things is that it sounds like they're pushing (trying too hard, fighting the ball, whatever you want to call it.) If you are trying too hard to do something, or even too focused on not making a mistake, you'll paly tight and have difficutly executing. They need to calm down and just play football. If they start having fun, maybe things will move a bit better. |

Kaylore, this is a tough room...you know that.
We have some serious tests coming up so whatever.... Honestly, I am not sure WHAT to think right now. I went to the start Cutler camp two weeks ago...it doesn't mean it's the right camp. Just my opinion....Let's just store an acorn this week somehow.... |

Guess that is what has me a bit frustrated Kaylore. Those that have been with the Broncs for longer than the Super Bowl winning years can remember when a season like this was not that unusual. I remember when Joe Collier's 3-4 defense was the reason we were finally competetive. Offense in the NFL is down across the boards this year. Some will say "but look at San Diego, blah blah blah" but they haven't played anyone but the Ravens who beat them. Just wish the sarcastic haters would STFU and enjoy 4-1 for a change, but in this age of instant gratification/& I want it now!!!! that is unlikely. Wonder what these folks are going to do when faced with a decade long challenge to resolve, oh never mind....we're fixing to answer that aren't we.... Dutch |

I'd be curious to see what would happen if the team went 4-12 one year. Hopefully I won't ever satisfy that curiosity. |

I think the frustration is because Shanahan has produced a such superior product for so long that because it not up to those standards, the fans are itching at the bit. And because Plummer is the central player in this drama, and isn't meeting anyone's expectation, he getting it from both barrels. Denver offense is a victim of it own past success, because the system has been so successful over the years. |

I get where you are coming from, but I wasn't suprised last year. I was afraid that our over use of the blitz would catch up to us in the playoffs. If that was to happen, I didn't think we would be able to get into a shootout with anyone. We did so well against the Pats that I was hoping we were home free, my bro brought me down to earth and called it the morning before the game. Thing is, it still gutted both of us. However, that is no excuse for the whining going on and the vitriole on this site. Sounds like a bunch of spoiled kids. Waaa. 4-1 they need to enjoy the moment. Oh, and I think Mike S. knows what the heck he is doing with this team...if he thought Jay was a better answer right now than Jake....it would be done. So the whiners need to lay off the Jay for Jake garbage until Mike decides it's time...it ain't time.

It ain't fair being the QB of struggling offense, but that why they get paid the big bucks.
What really has me pissed as a fan is that DCs in the league have enough game film of Plummer in Denver system, that they know what the have to do to stop him. And the Denver coaching staff hasn't come ways to play to his strength this year. And before you ask I gotting plenty of crap from board members before this year, talking about Plummer's weakness, and what I like about him. |

That was pretty much our view going into the AFCC game last year. That Pburgh had too much game film on us and would be able to take away the run. I don't think Jake is the second coming of John, hell not even Montana, but he is a hell of a lot better than Trent Dilfer! We need a bust out game to calm these folks down. I for one am NOT suprised it didn't happen against the Faid last week. Anyone remember how bad they sucked when we lost to them in the snow?

Ah...once again, the past doth bite us in the ass...
PLAYERS SI SYSTEM NO Who says this board is crabby and full of cranks? Who says we're living in the past? All we want is THE EXACT SAME SQUAD we had in the past. Why's that such a problem? I'll leave the calm and cool stuff to other people. I'd just as soon panic, thank you. |

well, I think personally Plummer is pressing because of Cutler
He knows he has to prove something this year or he's gone and I doubt he wants to go to a new team (it will happen anyway) the fans are on him, booing him at home, the media is hounding him....I don't care what he says, all that has to effect him a little. If he plays well again on the road, then I think it might be our fans and his psyche. I'm not saying Denver has bad fans, just people need to quit booing him AT HOME. criticize him all you want after the game, but during the game, get behind him. |
