Fleet Week in San Francisco - The Orange Mane

I just transferred to the USS Bonhomme Richard and apparently we're heading up to San Fran for Fleet Week this weekend. I've seen my fair share of air shows and i live the military every day, so i'm not really interested in that aspect of this little trip. I was just wondering if any of you have any tips on things to do there as i've never been there before. I think the Twins play the A's somewhere in there so i might try to catch that but i'd love to hear any other suggestions..

We'll be there through Tuesday i think, so if there are any Bronco bars there that would have to be a priority for Monday night.

I can't help myself Sailor.

If your in uniform I don't think you would have a hard time in the "district" Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I'll make a call out to some my Navy contacts out in San Fran and get back to you sailor. They live there so they'll know where us squids would enjoy. When I was stationed on the USS Omaha, fast boat out of pearl, we spent about 5 days there with the city of Omaha springing for the bill. Had a great time. In the meantime, keep checking back. I'll post as I recieve...dman

the Horse and Cow in san fran was a hangout for us sub sailors. Don't know if it's still there, however, it was always a hoot every single time we pulled into that watering hole. Then again, surface guys kinda stayed clear of it. Don't think it would be as discriminating as it used to be though so if it's still there, you'd have a blast , trust me on that one..dman

When I lived in Omaha I used to go to Freedom Park alot, and around that time there was alot of buzz about them possibly getting a nuclear sub for display. IIRC it was the USS Omaha or the USS Nebraska...can't remember which one.

WWII diesel boat is on display at freedom park presently. The Nebraska is still commissioned, believe it has been, or is presently being converted to an SSGN. The Omaha was decommed in the Mid 90's. It cost a small fortune to get a Nuke boat anywhere as a museum. Would love it if it did show up here though. Great boat, great crew, numerous major spec ops on that boat. Lots of cold war history and such. It was hands down the best sub I ever served on. They've let freedom park go to hell. Lots of the vets and active duty here are formulating a plan to get it squared away for the public with our time and efforts. Probably take a year or so...dman

Yep. They also tried to kick all recruiters out of the local high schools and passed some sort of measure to not support recruiting in the high schools. Well, if a PUBLIC high school recieves federal funds, sorry charlie, got to let them in. Don't know where it went after that...dman

I'm not even mad, that's amazing.

EDIT: Correction... It only took Mock one post to go there, i just didn't catch what he was getting at right away.

Anyway, i'll check back with this thread in case you guys come up with anything else. One of the Chiefs is heading a fishing trip so that could be cool. I'm definitly going to check out the wine tour, though.

Best to go to Napa on a weekday to avoid the crowds. Take some cash as they all charge for tastings these days. Big name wineries are on the west side of the valley (Mondavi, Coppola, BV, Berringer). They are fun, but check out some of the lesser known wineries on the East side of the valley like Joseph Phelps, Stags Leap, and my favorite little one - Plump Jack.

IIRC = If I remember correctly.

That's a shame about Freedom Park. I used to love going down there on the Marlin (the sub) and the Hazard (Minesweeper). I remember back in the early 90's when they flew in a couple of the aircraft that they have on display out there and when the park was underwater from a flood (still got pics of that). I moved right after they brought in the landing craft but moved down here before it was opened up to display.

What exactly do you mean that they let Freedom Park go to hell?

Anyways, this was probably 1997 or so when they were talking about obtaining the nuclear sub. They had plans drawn up and on display in the gift shop, but I guess it may have just been wishful thinking.

If you end up at the Coliseum, throw a rock at that place for me.

Fisherman's Wharf is one spot that the tourist go to. I've been twice. Once when I was younger, so I don't remember much, and a few years back, but it was just for the day. I took my son to see the Eagles play the Niners. He's a big Eagles fan. We swung by Fisherman's Wharf for a few minutes. But it was raining, so we didn't hang out long.

I second the Alcatraz suggestion. It's got a fascinating history. I think it's about a 3-4 hour tour, maybe a little more. Well worth it. They have these headphones you take with you and guide you around the Rock.

If your into science the Exploratorium in downtown SF is cool. http://www.exploratorium.edu/ If you are going to drive places I've always enjoyed going to Santa Cruz, they have a cool downtown area and a boardwalk with rides etc. Palo Alto is also a cool place to visit. The Stanford campus is located there and its really nice. Monterey is also a great place to visit. There is a cool fishermans wharf there and a Aquarium.

Or you can just cruise on down to the castro district in your uniform and I'm sure you will find a party. Great bars in that area if your looking for a place to watch football.

My Dad moved to the Bay Area a few years ago and I think he recently said that Fishermans Wharf is the most visited place in America.

Found out something cool today... Since i just got to the ship, they haven't assigned me to a duty section yet and they won't until we get back from this thing... Pretty much everyone else is going to have to stay on the ship for one of the four days because of the collapsed 4-section duty but i'll be free to roam the entire time. Thinking about renting a car and just taking my Magellan along with me to guide the way.

I probably won't get to catch the Twins/A's game and i find it really hard to convince myself that watching the 49ers vs. the Raiders is worth any sort of money. Although, if that game is at Oakland it could be an interesting experience to see all the crazies.

I'd like to apoligize in advance if the Broncos lose this weekend.. Ever since we got the crap kicked out of us against Oakland in December 2002 i swore i'd never get hammered before a Bronco game ever again. It was the first time and the last time, and it was a horrible experience... I was so drunk that i felt somehow responsible for the loss.. never felt so sick in my life.

Anyway, if the Castro district is something like the Gaslamp district in San Diego i'm sure it's a good time.. but that will mean drinking, and i just hope it doesn't happen again or i'm done!

A few tips for you:

The Bus Stop sports bar, in Cow Hollow on Union Street, always has a good crowd for MNF -- and there are Denver fans in the area. The area is walkable and friendly, and filled with hot women.

Stay clear of Napa or Sonoma on the weekends, especially if you're driving. The traffic can be a mess. If you want to bounce around the Bay Area with a rental car -- which is a good thing to do -- make sure to hit the Presidio (the old Army base, now a national park), the Marin Headlands (great views and hiking), and the Muir Woods (20 minutes north of the city, and gorgeous). But you can actually spend the entire time in the city itself and never be bored. Kezar Stadium, a venue near Golden Gate park where the 49ers used to play, is interesting. You'll want to check out the various neighborhoods, like Chinatown (good food), Japan Town (more good food), North Beach (yet more good food), the new Ferry Building (great food, and good people watching), Pacific Heights (amazing mansions, and hotties), the Marina (more amazing hotties), and Haight Ashbury (all sorts of madness, but in a good way). Any guide book will give you the lowdown and directions. The Castro is the gay district, which is interesting to see, but you probably don't want to hang out there.

One good way to check out the city is to pick specific streets, and then just walk/drive/or cable car their length. If you do so, I'd recommend the following: Fillmore Street; Union Street; Clement Street (great Asian neighborhood, and cheap eats); Hyde Street (a cable car line, which intersects with Lombard Street, that famous curving lane); and Market Street (the one-time heart of the city, now a mix of everything).

Anyway, that'll get you started. Have fun.

But for tamer entertainment I recommend drinks at the Equinox (Hyatt Regency Hotel) or beers at the San Francisco Brewing Company on Columbus. I too highly recommend the Alcatraz tour, and the wine country if you have the time. Also check out the Cliffhouse, the Haight, and the UC Berkeley campus (GO BEARS!)
