I must say this record has grown on me. It is so unusual and has so many layers that it is hard to wrap yourself around at first (at least that was true in my case). I really started to dig it when I listened to it through headphones. Then all the layering started to present itself more clearly.

I had not heard any of their prior material before, but my brother has their previous record. He claims it is very good, so I will definately have to borrow that from him soon. Have they released more than those two records?

I believe they released an EP before the first album, but that's it. This is one of my favorite early tracks.

Wow, The Minutemen's classic....I miss D Boon.

I know everyone loves the obivous highlights "History Lesson Part II" & "This Ain't No Picnic" (and so do I) but I always thought "D's Car Jam/Anxious Mo-Fo" and "Jesus And Tequila" deserved equal footing. I know there are no bad songs on the record, just saying they always stood out more to me. (and I can't get away from associating it with Husker Du's Zen Arcade probably because they came out about the same time....both amazing works.

This is the first Radio Birdman record I've heard. I picked it up off the strength of Dave Fricke's review in Rolling Stone. I love it. Has a cool surf-punk sound. I love the double guitar attack backed by the keys. Very cool stuff. My favorite tracks so far are "Remorseless" and "Die Like April", though there really is no misstep on the album. I will definately seek out their older material in the very near future.

No doubt. Another standout is "Cohesion," with the late, great D Boon providing gorgeous lead bass. Definately one of my favorite rock instrumentals.

I always liked Radios Appear but I thought a little too much was made out of it. Don't get me wrong, it's a good album, but it's spotty and it doesn't hold a candle to the early albums by The Saints (their main Aussie competition at the time). When it's on, it's great ("Aloha Steve & Danno") and when it's bad....it really sucks ("Man With The Golden Helmet").....there's a couple of Stooges and 13th Floor Elevators covers on it as well. It sounds as if they've improved in the material dept. given what you say..then again..it has taken them about 30 years to finally follow up Radios Appear, so they should have.

Anyone, and I'm looking at Hogan when I say this, a fan of Bad Brains? I just found out that the company I'm working for is going to be promoting their first album. Apparently their label is re-issuing it onto CD because it was never put on CD before. They're not re-mastering it, it's going to include all of the static that the LP's and tapes did because that's how the punk kids work. I'm seriously pumped about this one.

Sorry Nug, not really much of a Bad Brains fan. I have a couple of friends that are though and will be thrilled with this news. I don't really know why but much of the DC/Discord scene turns me off....outside of Minor Threat & Rites Of Spring, nothing else really does much for me....and neither does Ian MacKaye on the whole (he annoys me really). Lot's of people love stuff like Fugazi and Go-Go stuff like Trouble Funk, but I just never really got into it.

Yeah, I didn't really think there was any major slip up on the new album. Some tracks were less exciting than others, of course, but nothing that was worse than above average.

There is an "Essential" Radio Birdman album available; based on what you've said re: their spottiness, it seems like that would be the way to go when I buy another of their albums.

BTW, Hogan--what do think of the new Yo La Tengo? I think it's definately their best album since I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. I could do with shorter versions of those three long, spacey jams, but otherwise they knocked this one out of the park. "I Should Have Known Better" is the highlight for me.

It's great and you're very correct about it being their best effort since Beating. Personally, I was about to write the band off...I mean And Then Nothing Turned Itself... was okay and had some pretty cool moments...but the soft techno thing really isn't much my style. I hate Jad Fair, so you can guess what I thought about the collaboration with him and Summer Sun was IMHO, a disaster of marshmellow-like proportions...I tried to like it, but it just didn't take to me at all....it's really the only YLT album (by the band themselves) that I cannot stand.

So, as you can imagine, I'm thrilled with I'm Not Afraid Of You......what a return to form after nearly ten years. What a statement...they still have it and now they've returned to being what they once were...one of America's best alternative acts as well as one of the best kept musical secrets the USA has to offer.
