Though I don't believe the Malkin hype, that he'll be on the Crosby/Ovechkin level or may even surpass one, Malkin still projects out as a franchise player. None of the players offered in that rumor come anywhere near to that level of player.

The Pens will not trade Malkin uness they're getting a franchise player or potential franchise player in return. Period. It will require quality, not quanitity to make that happen.

Either way, I don't see it happening. He'll be wearing a Pens uniform on opening night.

Escape to L.A.

By Karen Price
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, August 18, 2006

ST. CATHARINES, Ontario - Missing Russian hockey star and Penguins prospect Evgeni Malkin surfaced in Los Angeles on Thursday -- five days after disappearing in Helsinki.
Malkin, whose whereabouts had been unknown ever since, flew to Tinseltown late Wednesday night with agent J.P. Barry and Olga McQueen, a Russian interpreter.

Turns out, Malkin, 20, was in Helsinki all along, waiting for the U.S. Embassy to reopen Monday after being closed for the weekend. He finally was able to get the necessary paperwork from Moscow and secure his visa Wednesday, and he boarded a plane that night.

"He has a visa. He's here legally. He's fine," said Pat Brisson, another of Malkin's agents who is based out of Santa Monica, Calif. "We don't have to hide him. He'll be (in Los Angeles) for a little while. It will be his home base until we move forward."

Malkin's disappearance became a matter of international intrigue after he left Metallurg Magnitogorsk, his Russian team, without warning just days after signing a new one-year contract.

His agents knew where he was, but they weren't talking, except to say that Malkin was safe and that they were in constant communication.

"If we tipped anyone he was there, it would have confused the issue," Brisson said. "People would have been trying to convince him to change his mind. He's been through enough."

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Malkin's disappearance was why he would sign a new contract with Magnitogorsk only to leave days later.

Fellow Russian and Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review earlier this week that he believed Malkin was pressured to sign.

Brisson revealed yesterday that the team's general director, Gennady Velichkin, held Malkin's passport after he gave his two-weeks notice to terminate his employment with Magnitogorsk in July.

"They didn't want to give it to him," Brisson said.

Once he inked the new deal, Malkin retrieved his passport to travel with Magnitogorsk to Helsinki, and he met Barry there.

Magnitogorsk coach Dave King told radio station The Fan 590 in Toronto that Malkin disappeared when the team arrived.

"At the airport in Helsinki, somehow we lost him," King told the station. "It's no surprise to the coaches. We all knew that Evgeni really, really wanted to go."

Russian news agency ITAR-TASS reported that Velichkin said he received an illegible fax from Malkin -- again giving two weeks' notice Sunday -- and that he suspected someone other than Malkin signed it.

Velichkin has threatened to sue the Penguins and the NHL and has criticized the effort to lure Malkin to U.S. as "sports terrorism."

Brisson said yesterday that there were no lawsuits pending, but Malkin is preparing for that possibility.

"We're moving forward with our own strategy," Brisson said. "We're working on it, but right now, there's nothing eminent."

Brisson said he wasn't sure when Malkin would be making his first trip to Pittsburgh.

"It all depends," he said. "As soon as we can do a deal."

Brisson said he told Penguins general manager Ray Shero that Malkin was in the country but said there was no timetable to begin contract negotiations.

The process shouldn't take long, however, because entry-level contracts are capped at $984,200 under the terms of the league's collective bargaining agreement. But Malkin can make up to $2.85 million with various performance bonuses.

"We have been informed by Evgeni Malkin's agent that Evgeni is now in the United States," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said in a statement. "At the appropriate time, we look forward to sitting down with Evgeni and his representatives to discuss what can be a very bright future with the Pittsburgh Penguins."

Several NHL and players' union officials declined to comment on the Malkin situation.

Los Angeles Kings officials, however, confirmed that Malkin skated yesterday at the team's Toyota Sports Training Center in El Segundo, Calif., along with NHL players Rob Blake, Anson Carter and Mathieu Schneider.

"A group of NHL players come here every summer and rent the ice on their own," Kings spokesman Jeff Moeller said. "We can confirm that he skated here with them today, but that had absolutely nothing to do with the Kings."

He referred all further questions to agent Brisson, who also represents Anson in his free agent negotiations.

"(Malkin) looked good," Brisson said, adding that Malkin would continue to train on and off the ice while staying at a hotel in the Los Angeles area. "He had a good skate."

Penguins players were looking forward Malkin's arrival in Pittsburgh.

"We kind of heard that around here, that he was coming," Penguins left winger Ryan Malone said from Minneapolis, where he's finishing pre-camp workouts. "It's great, because we're getting a world-class player. The Penguins are really setting us up for success.

"We're very lucky. He's so young, and Sidney (Crosby) and all of us will be a main group of guys who are planning to be here for awhile. Now, we get to start working to bring the (Stanley Cup) trophy back to the 'Burgh."

Yeah the Habs are all over JP. It's rumored that Mtl was looking to ditch Komisarek to the Isles for a draft pick in order to make the room. Personally, I hope they don't move a good young D-man for a middle of the road forward like JP. Mtl has enough of those already.

Not sure if anybody has seen this yet but get a load of the new Buffalo Sabres logo that they'll be going with next year...

... and it's been labelled everything from the Lightning Slug to the Buffalo Mullett. This bute almost ranks up there with the Islanders "Capt. Highliner" and Canuck's "Flying V" from back in the day. At least they'll be using the old retro as their third jersey.

Default malkin update

http://www.mosnews.com/news/2006/09/01/malkin.shtml

Malkin’s Parents Fear Son’s Fans, Plan to Leave Hometown

Russian run-away hockey player Malkin’s parents, frightened by their son’s frenzied Russian fans and hopeless chiefs of the Mettalurg hockey team where Malkin played, are going to sell their house and move from their native city of Magnitogorsk, the Zhizn’ newspaper reported.

Evgeni Malkin, who reportedly was the best player in the world outside the NHL, had secretly left his club, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, at Helsinki airport on August 13, 2006. He vanished for several days before resurfacing in the United States on August 17 and declaring his wish to play for Pittsburgh, where he had been offered a $3.8 mln. contract.

Metallurg general director Gennady Velichkin called the sudden disappearance of his best player “pure sports terrorism” and vowed to sue the Penguins and demand a huge compensation.

“You can’t imagine how Evgeni wanted to play in the NHL! ” his mother Natalia Malkina told reporters.

“And we dreamed with him. Finally he had found his way. And we will be by his side as his parents everywhere! But unfortunately there are people who are trying to thrust their opinion,” Natalia said.

“They will not leave us alone”.

“When Evgeni was still missing they stayed in our house day and night. They thought we would help them to find him. But we didn’t know where he was either. We understand he just could not call. He calmed us down as soon as he was able to do so,” she said.

According to the newspaper, some of Malkin’s fans in his native city want revenge for his defection.

“I will not be surprised if fans burn to the ground his restaurant,VIP Zone!” one fan said. “You just can’t do such things. He has spat upon us”.

Default Mass found in Lacroix's spine not cancerous

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2567438

Colorado Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix confirmed what has been rumored for weeks, saying he recently went through a health scare that raised concerns that he might have cancer or another serious illness.

Reuters
Avs president Pierre Lacroix said his recent health scare had nothing to do with him giving up GM duties with the team.
Lacroix had a mass in his spine, resulting in a frightening series of tests that ultimately concluded the mass was not a tumor.

Lacroix's scare began eight days after he announced the hiring of Francois Giguere as his successor as GM and said his decision to give up his dual duties with the Avalanche had nothing to do with health issues.

Doctors finally were able to rule out cancer and other serious illnesses after Lacroix underwent a series of tests during hospital stays in Las Vegas and Denver, in addition to the Minnesota Mayo Clinic. A biopsy in the spinal area is so dangerous, it is considered a last resort, and doctors ultimately were able to rule out cancer by other means.

"You're in a long period of knowing nothing, or imagining the worst," Lacroix told The Denver Post. "I had a mass, and still have a mass, in my back. They said to me that it could be from so many things. It could be from a virus or a disease, or it could be a tumor … No doubt the worst things go through your mind. It was very tough on my wife and my family, but the outcome is great."

Lacroix said he felt ill at his Las Vegas-area home on the night of June 2. He called his friend and neighbor, Rene Angelil, singer Celine Dion's husband.

"He's had two heart attacks and I asked him, 'What are the symptoms?'" Lacroix told the paper. "He said, 'Burning sensation in the stomach and back pain.'" Lacroix said that described his symptoms, and Angelil took him to a hospital. Over the next few days, doctors ruled out a heart issue and sent him back to Denver to be treated by Avalanche team physicians and renowned neurologist Stanley Ginsburg.

Lacroix spent two weeks in an intensive care unit, as doctors pumped him full of steroids and attempted to shrink the mass in his back. Doctors also ruled out other serious diseases, including multiple sclerosis. On his second visit to a specialist at the Mayo Clinic on Aug. 18, he finally got the word that the mass wasn't cancerous.

"They told me they would have to monitor it, and that I might have another reaction like I had a few months ago, but that there was, in their opinion, no need to go in for any kind of surgery," Lacroix told The Post.

"You can't call it a tumor. You don't know why it hits. It hit me and created this malformation of the spine. People live with pain in the back, and there's nothing wrong with that."

Sorta good news for the Penguins arena issue.....new mayor of Pittsburgh (Mayor O'Connor passed away this evening from cancer, RIP) Luke Ravenstahl is a supporter of the Penguins/IOC bid.

Pretty amazing stuff.....a 26 year old kid is going to run the city of Pittsburgh.

After trading a franchise netminder just entering his prime for an knuckle dragging floater with more baggage than a Samsonite factory, he shouldn't have been around long enough to resign.

I regret the fact that the Avs didn't find a way to pry Jay Bouwmeester out of there while Iron Mike was still calling the shots.
