RP Moe Drabowsky

Myron Walter Drabowsky

Bats Right, Throws Right
Height 6' 2", Weight 200 lb.

Born July 21, 1935 in Ozanna, Poland
Died June 10, 2006 in Little Rock, AR

Debut August 7, 1956
Final Game September 19, 1972
  • Moe began his career as a starter and achieved his most success as a reliever, but he's best remembered as a practical joker.

  • The highlight of Drabowsky's 17-year career came in Game 1 of the 1966 World Series. He set a record for relievers by striking out 11 batters over 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers, starting the underdog Orioles toward a sweep.

  • Drabowsky was lights out in the post season throughout his career. He won the World Series with Baltimore in 1970, too. He only allowed three hits and three walks in ten innings during his post season career. He struck out 12 and finished 1-0, with a microscopic 0.90 ERA.

  • He batted .364, .350 and .286 from 1966-68.

  • He won the first game in Kansas City Royals history and mused they must be pretty bad if he was their Opening Day pitcher.

  • His highlight as a practical joker was giving a hotfoot to then Commissioner Bowie Kuhn in the 1970 World Series clubhouse celebration. That may or may not have bought him a ticket out of Baltimore for good.

  • His other gags included putting sneezing powder in the opposing teams air conditioner, and calling their bullpens to get pitchers warming up early in scoreless ballgames.

  • He also had a fondness for snakes. They found their way into lockers and shaving kits and anywhere that might make people scream. Moe wouldn't settle for the rubber novelty kind, he would stop by pet stores and bring live garter snakes and boas into the lockerroom for his stunts.

  • He returned to Poland in 1987 as a baseball ambassador, helping the Poles form their first team for Olympic competition.

Unfortunately Moe left us just a couple months ago after a long battle with cancer. RIP Moe, you were one of a kind.

Killericon continues his streak of rampant Homerism and picks Troy Glaus.

Glaus began his career with the Angels in 1998 and was installed as the team's starting third baseman in 1999. He had a breakout season in 2000, becoming an All-Star and leading the American League in home runs that year.

Glaus was a key member of the Angels' 2002 World Series championship team and was named the Most Valuable Player of that series.

Glaus followed that up with an another All-Star year in 2003, but he would miss much of the 2004 season with a shoulder injury. 2004 was the last year of his contract with the Angels. As an established veteran, he was in demand on the free agent market and able to field lucrative offers for long term contracts. Although Glaus had spend his entire career an Angel, and was a fan favorite, the team decided not to pursue Glaus' return. Amid concerns about Glaus' future health after his injury, the team decided to go with the much lower-priced alternative of turning the third base position over to young prospect Dallas McPherson, whom they felt had a good chance to soon become as productive as Glaus had been.

Glaus ultimately signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks for $45 million USD over four years. Glaus' 2005 season with Arizona, while by no means terrible, was still a slight disappointment and he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in the off-season.

In an eight-season career, Glaus is a .253 hitter with 219 home runs and 612 RBI in 827 games. In 19 postseason games, he hit .333 with nine home runs and 16 RBI. Glaus has been selected for three All-Star Games.

Although Glaus is a third baseman, he played a game for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Chicago White Sox on May 27th, 2006 as a shortstop, due the demotion of Toronto shortstop Russ Adams. As Blue Jays manager John Gibbons pointed out, this change in position was only for one game. Glaus was not expected to do much fielding due to the fact the pitcher was known to induce many fly balls, instead of ground balls.[1] This defensive alignment did not affect his hitting, going 2-4 with 1 HR. Since then, Glaus has made several starts at shortstop, usually when the Blue Jays are facing National League opponents.

As a batter, Glaus is known for his natural, easy swing that produces home runs through an upper-cut motion. However, like many sluggers in MLB is very prone to striking out. Troy Glaus once said in a post-game interview that "I'm not paid to walk" when asked why he swung on a 3-0 count.

On August 25, 2006, Glaus registered his 1,000th career hit on a single versus the Kansas City Royals.

With the last pick in the draft Those Cheap Bastards select the ultimate utility man who is a member of three baseball halls of fame.

Martin Dihigo, P/C/1B/2B/3B/SS/LF/CF/OF, Negro Leagues

Bio
Martín Dihigo Llanos was perhaps the most versatile player in baseball history. Known as "El Maestro," he played all nine positions skillfully. Dihigo became a national institution in his native Cuba, but also starred in many other countries, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, also spending 12 seasons in the Negro leagues. Playing in the Mexican League in 1938, he went 18-2 and led the league with a 0.90 ERA, while also winning the batting crown with a .387 mark.

Quote
"He was the greatest all-around player I know. I say he was the best player of all-time, black or white. He could do it all."
— Buck Leonard

Did You Know... that Martín Dihigo is also a member of the Cuban and Mexican baseball halls of fame?

Comparable Players:
No one. Pete Rose played five positions and was adequate at each, but Dihigo excelled at eight positions.

Martin Dihigo, a 6'3" 210-lb righthanded Cuban, was one of the most versatile players of all time. His incredible skills gained him the unique honor of being elected to the Mexican, Cuban, and American Halls of Fame. Endowed with great speed and an exceptionally strong arm, Dihigo was a star performer at every position.

Dihigo began his American career in 1923 at the age of 18, playing first base with the touring Cuban Stars. He played in America from 1923 until 1936. After 1936 he played his summer ball in Mexico, except in 1945 when he was the player-manager of the New York Cubans. He reportedly continued to play in the Mexican Leagues until the 1950s, although his statistics are available only through 1947.

Statistics documenting Dihigo's American career exist for 1923-31, 1935-36, and 1945. In those 12 years, Dihigo hit over .300 six times, including .325 in 1926 with a league-leading 11 home runs in 40 games, and .333 in 1935 with a league-leading 9 home runs in 42 games. His overall American statistics show a .295 career batting average and a 6-1 record as a pitcher in 1931.

Dihigo was primarily a pitcher in Latin America, where he was known for his blazing fastball. His Mexican League totals show a lifetime .317 batting average in 10 seasons (1937-44, 1946-47), including a league-leading .387 in 1938. He was 119-57 as a pitcher in Mexico, going 18-2 with a 0.90 ERA in 1938 and 22-7 with a league-leading 2.53 ERA in 1942. He threw the first no-hitter in Mexican League history, and also had no-hitters in Venezuela and Puerto Rico.

Dihigo played for 24 seasons in Cuba (1922-29, 1931-46). The record of his Cuban career is somewhat fragmentary, but for the years which are documented (1922-29, 1931, 1935-46), he hit over .300 nine times, finishing with a lifetime .291 batting average. As a pitcher he was 93-48 in 1935-46.

Statistics exist for one year of play in the Dominican Republic (1937), when Dihigo hit .351.

Combining his Dominican, American, Cuban and Mexican statistics results in a lifetime .302 batting average with 130 home runs (11 seasons worth of home run totals are missing) and a 218-106 (.673) pitching mark. Dihigo often showed his versatility in Negro League competition by playing all nine positions in the course of a single game.

Known for his warm, friendly personality, Dihigo was a national hero in his native Cuba, where he served as Minister of Sport in his later years. He was elected posthumously to the American baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. In a poll conducted in the early 1980s among ex-Negro League players and other experts on black baseball, Dihigo gathered votes as best all-time outfielder and third baseman, and was voted to the first team all-time black all-star team as a second baseman. I would love to rate the teams like we did in the all time NFL draft.

Which Bronco LB 52 could still do if he wanted to......

That seemed to give a pretty well rounded consensus of the teams strenghts and weaknesses.

Everybody did a terrific job drafting. I guess the downside of the draft was having only 8 teams and some great players went undrafted.

C: Gabby Hartnett-Top dozen catcher of all-time
CLOCKWORK ORANGE can double Joe Torre as a Player/Manager

I liked how Bill Freehan and Ted Simmons got love in this draft, though.

1B Willie McCovey- Not a multi-faceted contributor, but a legit 500 HR club member

Eddie Murray - Story of his career; too quiet and under the radar for anybody to notice

Buck Leonard - Greatest Negro League slugger outside of Josh Gibson

Johnny Mize - Underrated right handed slugger of the late 30s and 40s with the Cards and Yankees

2B: No glaring omission

3B: Ditto. Thinnest position in the Hall of Fame. Chipper Jones is a borderline HOF so can't fault the league for not drafting him. Omar Linares might have been one of the hot corner greats, but his loyalty to Castro prevented him from touching foot on North American soil.

SS: Ditto.

LF: Al Simmons, Ralph Kiner, Joe Medwick, Minnie Minoso,

CF: Richie Ashburn

RF: Paul Waner

SP The league cleaned up pretty good on starting pitchers. The only real noticeable snub was Don Sutton, but like Murray he was consistently under the radar for a long, long time.

This post should not be perceived as criticism, just a list of the great talent that is still out there.

I haven't forgotten about you JCM. I just need to find an evening where I have 30 minutes to spend with a notepad evaluating all the teams.

I'm planning on doing an All Overlooked Team, but not for a day or two.

I just got done finishing up the bios for all my players and linking them on my roster page.

CW, if I'm off base here please let me know. We're gonna rank the teams just like we did in the NFL all time draft. Do not rate your own team.

For the team you like the best, give them 7 points. The team that is, in your opinion, 2nd best, give them 6 points. Obviously all these teams are amazing, but the team you liked the least gets 1 point.

A small article bragging up your team would be nice as well. If you have little known players a refresher blurb about them would be great.

Clockwork (or myself if he's busy) will average the totals out. If we have all 8 managers participate in the ratings then we can just add the totals. If not everyone rates the teams the averaging process is the most fair.

OK, rate those teams!
