 Harold Joseph "Pie" Traynor (November 11, 1899 - March 16, 1972) was a Major League Baseball third baseman who played his entire career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1920-37). Traynor was born in Framingham, Massachusetts. He received his nickame for a fondness for eating pie. He is generally considered to have been the greatest National League third baseman before the 1950s. Although he played in the era before the Gold Glove award was created, he was regarded by most baseball observers as the best-fielding third baseman ever until Brooks Robinson came along. He had a lifetime batting average of .320, and was struck out only 278 times in 7,559 career at bats. Playing his home games at Pittsburgh's spacious Forbes Field kept his home run total low, reaching a high of 12 in 1923. However, those long distances also aided him in hitting doubles and triples, and he had over 100 runs batted in (RBI) in a season seven times. He also managed the Pirates from 1934 to 1939. In 1948, Traynor was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, being the initial third baseman to be chosen by the BBWAA. He died at age 72 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, not long after the Pirates moved into Three Rivers Stadium and retired his uniform number 20. In 1999, he ranked Number 70 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, and was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Traynor is also the only Major League Baseball player ever to steal home plate in an All-Star Game.  |

A new pitch, a split-fingered fastball, was taught to him by a wise, old man of the game, and in a matter of years, Sutter took this new weapon and blazed a trail as one of the game's top relief pitchers. A six-time All-Star, Sutter was the 1979 National League Cy Young Award winner and he was on the mound for the last six outs of the Cardinals' 1982 World Series championship. He saved at least 20 games in nine consecutive seasons, and set an NL mark with 45 saves in 1984. The right-hander retired following an arm injury, with 300 saves and a 2.84 ERA to his credit. Sutter is going to be the perfect setup guy for Fingers. For most of his career Sutter would pitch the 8th AND ninth innings, if not the 7th as well.

Killericon gets himself one mean DH: Carlos Delgado
 Delgado was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. He debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1993 season. Originally a catcher, he switched to first baseman and rapidly became one of the most dangerous sluggers in the major leagues. A two-time All Star, in 2000 and 2003, Delgado holds a wide variety of Blue Jays single season and career records. He also won the Hank Aaron and TSN Player of the Year awards in 2000, and the Silver Slugger Award in 1999, 2000 and 2003. Delgado has hit at least 30 home runs in nine consecutive seasons, and amassed at least 100 RBI in seven of his ten full seasons. On September 25, 2003, in a game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Delgado became only the fifth American League player and 15th major leaguer to hit four home runs in one game. He hit a grand slam in the first inning, then led off the fourth, sixth and eighth innings with solo shots. On Septembe 30, 2003 he won AL player of the week for the week. On September 7,2004 Delgado was named Al player of the week. Delgado became a free agent following the 2004 season and was pursued by the Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. On January 25, 2005, he finally chose the Marlins, signing a four-year contract worth a reported $52 million. His transition to the National League was very successful, hitting for a .301 batting average, .399 on base percentage, with 33 home runs and 115 RBI in 2005. On November 23, 2005, the Mets, one of the teams which had pursued Delgado the previous off-season, struck a trade with Florida to send Mike Jacobs and two minor leaguers to the Marlins for Delgado and $7 million. The deal was part of the Marlin's "market correction." Through the 2005 season, in 13 years of major league service, Delgado had a career .284 batting average, and a .393 on-base percentage with 369 home runs and 1,173 RBI in 1,567 games. Carlos Delgado was one of the first Puerto Rican players to agree to play for Puerto Rico in the MLB World Baseball Classic, representing the island. In addition to Delgado, the team featured fellow Puerto Ricans Ivan Rodriguez, Sandy Alomar, Jr. as catchers; Carlos Beltran, Bernie Williams, Jose Cruz, Jr. and Luis Matos as outfielders; Mike Lowell, José Vidro, Felipe Lopez, Alex Cintron and Carlos Baerga as infielders; and pitchers Javier Vazquez, Joel Pineiro, J.C. Romero and Kiko Calero amongst others, in a team managed by St. Louis Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo. Despite playing only two games (one as a catcher and one as a DH) and having one at-bat with the Blue Jays in 1993, Delgado was awarded a World Series championship ring after the team won the World Series. Through 2006, Delgado is the all-time leader for interleague play RBI with 131, and second all-time in home runs with 43. Like his hero, Roberto Clemente, Delgado is a well known humanitarian and peace activist and has been open about his political beliefs. As part of the Navy-Vieques protests, Delgado was actively opposed to the use of the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico as a bombing target practice facility of the military of the United States, until bombing was halted in 2003. He is also against the occupation of Iraq. In the 2004 season, Delgado protested the war by silently staying in the dugout during the playing of God Bless America. Delgado does not make a public show of his beliefs and even his teammates were not aware of his views until a story was published in July 2004 in the Toronto Star. Delgado was quoted as saying "It’s a very terrible thing that happened on September 11. It's (also) a terrible thing that happened in Afghanistan and Iraq,". "I just feel so sad for the families that lost relatives and loved ones in the war. But I think it's the stupidest war ever." The story was the subject of a media frenzy, mostly in New York, where on July 21, 2004, as was anticipated, Delgado was booed for his passive protest during a game at Yankee Stadium [3]. Angry New York fans booed him and, when Delgado lined out in the 7th inning, fans chanted "USA, USA" even though Delgado, like all Puerto Ricans, is an American citizen. Delgado had explained that the playing of God Bless America had come to be equated with a war in which he didn't believe. In a New York Times interview, Delgado said this is what he believed in, and "It takes a man to stand up for what he believes." After being traded to the Mets, Delgado underscored his "team-first" mentality including his decision to now stand for the playing of God Bless America. "Everybody stands and I will be there," he explained. Among other charity work, Delgado is well known for his generous visits to hospitals in his hometown where, on Three Kings Day, he brings toys to hospitalized children. In 2006, he joined Puerto Rico's Senate President in co-sponsoring a massive Three Kings gift-giving effort in the town of Loiza. Delgado started his own non-profit organization, "Extra Bases" to assist island youth. Hard to believe Speaker slipped this far. He would have been a solid pick about a dozen rounds ago. He was overshadowed by Ty Cobb during his playing days and he remains one of the most underrated superstars in baseball history.

I've always thought new-school closer (ie not Goose Gossage and the like) was the most overrated position in all of sports so I'm not going to take a true closer for my bullpen. Eric Gagne was a mediocre starter with good stuff until he moved to the bullpen and became one of the greatest closers ever.
I'll stock my bullpen with great arms and let them use all they have for one inning at a time (look at what Brad Penny did in the All-Star game knowing he was only going to pitch a few innings; he let it loose and dominated everyone but the otherworldly Vlad Guerrero). I'll take Dazzy Vance, P, Dodgers/Yankees. I liked this story from Bill James: "Dazzy Vance, blessed with a blazing fastball, had major league trials beginning in 1915, but did not establish himself as a major league pitcher until 1922, when he was 31 years old. He could not sustain effectiveness for any period of time, up to age 30, because of a chronic sore arm. At New Orleans in 1920, Dazzy banged his arm on the table in the middle of a poker game, and broke something off. What had been a chronic pain became a source of sharp, unbearbale pain, neccessitating emergency surgery by a doctor Vance didn't know from Adam. No one knows exactly what the doctor did; my guess is that he took bone chips and debris out of the elbow. In any case, the chronic pain disappeared, and Vance was a hard-throwing, hard-drinking, medical miracle for the next fifteen years."  Code:

With my next pick the Denver Zephyers select Johan Santana, P, Twins.
Santana has dominated hitters since he became a starter in the middle of 2003. I think a move back to the bullpen, where he started his major league career in 2000, will be much easier for Johan than his first go round in the pen.  Code:
