I'll select Bob Gibson, P Cardinals.

Don't let the smile fool you, he was one of the fiercest competitors to ever step on the field.

With my third selection I'll take Tom Seaver, P, New York Mets/Cincinnati Reds/Chicago White Sox/Boston Red Sox.

Tom "Terrific" is one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history and maybe the best of the modern day hurlers.

With my fourth selection I'll take Rickey Henderson, LF, Oakland A's/New York Yankees/Toronto Blue Jays/I don't feel like typing the rest of his teams .

Rickey will obviously be batting leadoff for me. He's the greatest basestealer of all-time and has arguably the best ever combination of power and speed (Bonds cheated, Henderson didn't).

They don't make leadoff hitters like Henderson anymore. He took a ton of walks, stole a ton of bases, had a ton of extra-base hits and thus scored the most runs ever.

Rickey also wore the coolest batting gloves ever -- those neon green Mizuno gloves he used during his second stint in Oakland.

I will select Johnny Bench, C Reds.

Perhaps the greatest catcher of all time. He was N.L. Rookie of the Year, a two time N.L. MVP, a World Series MVP and a 10 time Gold Glove winner behind the plate.

He has a long ways to go longevity wise, but his first six seasons match up with anybody in baseball history.

3B Mike Schmidt Phillies

Michael Jack Schmidt

Born September 27, 1949 in Dayton, OH

Bats Right, Throws Right
Height 6' 2", Weight 203 lb.

Debut September 12, 1972
Final Game May 28, 1989

Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995.
  • By the midway point of his career, Schmidt was already widely regarded as the best all around third baseman ever.

  • Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995 on the first ballot. He was named on 444 of 460 ballots, a 96.5% election percentage that is sixth all time.

  • 12 time All-Star.

  • 11 Gold Gloves.

  • Three time Most Valuable Player.

  • Led the NL in home runs eight times.

  • Led the NL in RBI four times.

  • Led the NL in slugging percentage and OPS five times.

  • Led the NL in total bases and OBP three times.

  • Had 30 or more HRs 13 times in a 14 year span.

  • Despite an often contentious relationship with the notoriously combative Phillie fans, Schmidt is arguably the most beloved athlete to ever play in Philadelphia. Schmidt wept openly when he announced his retirement after 18 years as a Phillie.

  • Loyal to a fault, Schmidt remains a staunch supporter of former teammate Pete Rose's Hall of Fame candidacy.

  • Won both the regular season and World Series MVP awards in 1980 as the Phillies won their only World Championship.

"Any time you think you have the game conquered,
the game will turn around and punch you right in the nose"
.

I would draft Jackie Robinson, but I already have a 2nd baseman.

Killericon selects C Mike Piazza.

Piazza was the last player the Dodgers drafted of the 1988 draft. He was their selection in the 62nd round, and the 1390th pick overall. It is believed that the pick was partly a favor on the part of Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, who is godfather to one of Piazza's brothers and, like Piazza, grew up in Norristown. Piazza swore he'd learn to catch if he was drafted. Piazza's major league debut came with the Dodgers in 1992, when he appeared in 21 games. He then won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1993.
Piazza's best season was 1997, a year when he finished second in MVP voting. He hit .362, with 40 home runs and 124 runs batted in, an on base percentage of .431 and a slugging percentage of .638.
He played for the Dodgers until he was traded to the Florida Marlins on May 14, 1998. Piazza and Todd Zeile went to the Marlins in return for Gary Sheffield, Charles Johnson, Bobby Bonilla, Manuel Barrios, and Jim Eisenreich. The trade, precipitated by a contract dispute, is regarded by many as one of the worst moves in Dodgers history. One week later, on May 22, Piazza was traded from the Marlins to the New York Mets for Preston Wilson, Ed Yarnall, and Geoff Goetz.
Piazza helped the Mets to two consecutive playoff appearances in 1999 and 2000, the second resulting in a National League Pennant and World Series appearance although the team would lose to a Yankee team winning their fourth World Series in five years.
One of the most emotional moments of Piazza's career came when he belted a dramatic two-run home run in the eighth inning against Steve Karsay on September 21, 2001 in New York City to lift the Mets to a 3-2 triumph over the Braves in the first regular season professional sporting event in New York City since the September 11 tragedy.
To ease the stress on his deteriorating knees, Piazza began to split his time between catching and playing first base during the 2004 season, an experiment which was abandoned before the end of the season because of Piazza's defensive deficiencies. Although recognized as a great hitter, Piazza is generally not well-regarded for his defensive play, despite having caught two no hitters thrown by Ramón Martínez and Hideo Nomo. Nomo's was particularly impressive because it happened at Coors Field. Piazza has had trouble throwing out runners stealing second base, though not because of a lack of arm strength. Piazza's height makes rising from a crouch difficult and negates the benefits of his strong arm.
In his 14-year career (through 2005), Piazza's career batting average is .311 with 397 home runs, 1,223 RBI, and 308 doubles in 1,702 games.
On October 2, 2005, Piazza filed for free agency, effectively ending his career with the Mets. He signed with the San Diego Padres on (January 29), 2006 and is their starting catcher and clean-up hitter. Through July 27,2006, Piazza is batting .304 with 16 homers, a surprising output for the slugger, since the numbers of most catchers drop significantly after they reach age 35. Piazza, whom scouts doubted could be a productive player in the big leagues, hence his draft position, is proving critics wrong yet again, this time over a decade later.
He represented Italy in the 2006 World Baseball Classic.

He leads Catchers all time for home runs.

Those Cheap Bastards select:

Al Kaline, RF, Detroit Tigers

and

Roberto Clemente, RF, Pittsburgh Pirates

I'll switch Kaline over to Left Field and have the Babe hit in the DH slot.

Al Kaline:

Bio

ost-Season: 1968 World Series, 1972 ALCS
Awards: All-Star (15): 1955-1967, 1971, 1974; Gold Gloves (10): 1957-1959, 1961-1967

Al Kaline was a model of consistency who excelled with minimum fanfare. Over 22 seasons, the quiet, durable Tiger outfielder accumulated 3,007 hits, 399 home runs, a .297 batting average, 10 Gold Gloves and 15 All-Star team selections. "Mr. Tiger" won the batting title in 1955, hitting .340 at the age of 20. His reputation as a clutch performer was enhanced by his .379 average against St. Louis in the 1968 World Series.

Quote
"There have been a lot of great defensive players. The fella' who could do everything is Al Kaline. He was just the epitome of what a great outfielder is all about – great speed, catches the ball, and throws the ball well."
— Brooks Robinson

And Clemente:

Bio

Post-Season: 1960 World Series, 1970 NLCS, 1971 NLCS, 1971 World Series, 1972 NLCS
Awards: All-Star (15): 1960-67, 1969-72; National League MVP 1966; Gold Glove (12): 1961-1972; 1971 World Series MVP

Roberto Clemente Walker's pride and humanitarianism won him universal admiration. Despite an unorthodox batting style, the Pirates' great won four batting crowns and amassed 3,000 hits. He was equally brilliant in right field, where he displayed a precise and powerful arm. Clemente earned National League MVP honors in 1966, but achieved his greatest fame in the 1971 World Series, when he batted .414. Tragically, Clemente's life ended at age 38 - the victim of a plane crash while flying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims.

Quote
"Some right fielders have rifles for arms, but he had a howitzer."
— Tim McCarver

Killericon is happy to pick one of the best shortstops of all time: Cal Ripken Jr.

Calvin 'Cal' Edwin Ripken, Jr. (born August 24, 1960 in Havre de Grace, Maryland) is a former Major League Baseball player. Cal played his entire career for the Baltimore Orioles from 1981 to 2001 at shortstop and third base. A 19-time MLB All-Star, Cal is widely considered one of the best shortstops to ever play the game. At 6' 4", Cal pioneered the way for the larger and taller shortstops. Cal was raised in Aberdeen, Maryland and attended Aberdeen High School (as did his brother Billy Ripken), a town near Havre de Grace, in a baseball family. His father, Cal Sr., was a long-time coach in baseball who managed the Orioles in the late 1980s. His brother, Billy Ripken, played second base for various teams, including the Orioles. He has two other siblings, Ellie and Fred. He is married to Kelly Geer and has a daughter, Rachel, born in 1989 and a son, Ryan, born in 1993.
Ripken was best known as baseball's "Iron Man" [1] , playing in a record 2,632 straight games, spanning sixteen seasons, from (May 30, 1982 - September 20, 1998). He played his 2131st consecutive game on September 6, 1995, against the California Angels, breaking the 56-year-old record set by the "Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig.
"The Streak"

Along the lines of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak, Cal Ripken's consecutive game streak is regarded as one of baseball's 'unbreakable' records. His record, which took 16 years to establish, made him a popular player with the American League fans, who voted him into the AL All-Star team 18 out of 19 times[1].
Despite having statistics that put him among the best in the American League, Ripken played for an average team. The Baltimore Orioles only made the playoffs 3 times in his 20 year career. When Ripken was viewed to be not performing well in the late 80's, fans booed and critics criticized his passion for the game often calling him "selfish". However, he continued to play every game until he took himself out on September 20, 1998.
During "The Streak", Cal played nearly the entire game each game, averaging 99.8% of time on the field [citation needed]. But Ripken had several close calls that almost ended the streak. In a 1985 game (#444 of the Streak), Ripken sprained his ankle while running out a double. The next day, Ripken's ankle swelled so bad that he couldn't play. However, that day was an exhibition game for the Orioles and Ripken sat out. In a game against the Seattle Mariners in June of 1993, there was a brawl on the mound at Oriole Park. Ripken twisted his right knee while trying to break up the brawl. "It was the closest I have ever come to not playing," Ripken later told the press. He woke up the next day and could not get out of bed. He told his wife Kelly about not being able to play and Kelly asked, "Can't you just play one inning?" Cal immediately responded, "YOU TOO?"[citation needed] The Orioles had a game that night and Ripken played. He taped up his knee and took infield practice before the game, and then played every inning for the next two weeks. During that same year, Ripken's second child was about to be born sometime during the season. The media asked if Ripken would sit out if his child would be born on a game day and he said he would. However, Ripken's second child, Ryan, was born on an Orioles off day.
Another streak that is often mentioned is his consecutive innings streak. Ripken played in 8,243 straight innings from June 5, 1982, to September 14, 1987, also considered to be a record, although not an "official" one as the major leagues have not traditionally kept statistics on innings played by non-pitchers.
Cal Ripken is also noted for having played third base for the Rochester Red Wings in the longest game in professional baseball history: a 33 inning, 8 hour, 25 minute, 3-2 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox that began on April 18th, 1981, and didn't end until June 23rd when play resumed. Contemporary Wade Boggs also played in this game, for the Red Sox.

1B Jimmie Foxx A's, Red Sox

James Emory Foxx (Beast or Double X)

Bats Right, Throws Right
Height 6' 0", Weight 195 lb.

Debut May 1, 1925
Final Game September 23, 1945

Born October 22, 1907 in Sudlersville, MD
Died July 21, 1967 in Miami, FL

Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1951.

  • Known as the right handed Babe Ruth.

  • Played in the first All-Star Game in 1933 and each ASG for the next eight years, every season he was a full time player.

  • Retired with 534 home runs, second only to Ruth's 714. He remained second on the all-time home run list until Willie Mays passed him in 1967.

  • Won the AL MVP in 1932, 1933 and 1938. He was second in MVP voting in 1939.

  • Won the Triple Crown in 1933 (.356, 48 HR, 163 RBI).

  • Would have won a second Triple Crown in 1938 if not for Hank Greenberg's 58 HRs.

  • Seventh all-time with 1922 RBI.

  • Drove in over 100 runs 13 times, including 175 RBI in 1938. He led the league in RBI three times.

  • Fifth all-time with a .609 slugging percentage.

  • Won two AL batting championships and finished his career with a .325 average.

  • He was the HR champ four times despite competition from Ruth, Gehrig, Greenberg, and DiMaggio.

  • Led the league in slugging percentage and OPS five times.

  • Tired of doing chores on his father's farm, he tried to enlist in the Army at the age of ten.

  • Discovered by Connie Mack, he broke in as a catcher and backed up Mickey Cochrane for the first couple years of his career.

  • Remembered for his incredible power, but he was also a versatile athlete. Besides 1B and catcher, Foxx started 141 games at 3B and a couple dozen in the OF, he even started one game at shortstop.

  • The strongarmed Foxx also pitched in ten games and fared pretty well on the mound. He allowed only 13 hits in 23 innings of work and retired with a 1-0 record and a nifty 1.59 ERA.

  • He was equally effective in the post season. Foxx batted .350, .333 and .348 as Philadelphia won the World Series twice in three years from 1929-1931.

"But if I had broken Ruth's record
it wouldn't have made any difference.
Oh, it might have put a few more
dollars in my pocket, but
there was only one Ruth."
