I remember a story about Duncan when he came into the league as the #1 pick. The Spurs sent him to some NBA developmental camp the summer before the season for rookies only. They wanted him to work on shooting with his left hand, turning to his left, etc. So Duncan went there and basically everytime he got the ball in a scrimmage he went left, struggled a bit and looked timid. Another big man who was a rookie at the time (Bryant Reeves maybe?) basically dominated him and there were very real whispers that Duncan may be a bust. Of course, he was just working on a weak part of his game and has been a dominate post player since then.
