Phil Collins drum solo in "In the Air Tonight" was pretty damned good.

I agree with Moby Dick, the fact that he used to play with his bare hands is amazing to me.

Great topic.
Neil Peart - Anything he does. Period. The best of all time IMO. Tommy Lee. I have to mention him being the huge Crue fan that I am. Pound for pound his solos really don't stand up as some of the greatest, but he's more about showmanship anyway. Plus, his kit sounds phenominal and his bass drum tears right through you when he hits it in concert. Steve Gadd - He is known as one of the greatest of all time. Rightfully so...fundamentally sound and a total joy to listen to. His solo on Steely Dan's "Aja" is great. Danny Serraphine - His solo in "Make Me Smile" by Chicago is sure and sweet, and is one of my all time favorites. John Bonham - He's the only reason I can bear listening to Led Zeppelin anymore, and "Moby Dick" is great. Steve Smith - I grew up loving Journey, so Smith was the first drummer I ever became familiar with. "La Do Da" off of their "Captured" live disc is great. |

His name is Mike Portnoy, and yeah... he kicks major ass! Just listen to Blind Faith by Dream Theater from beginning to end. It's sick. He's among the top drummers of the world, no doubt. I don't know about drum "solos", but Blind Faith is one of the best things I ever heard by a drummer. |

"Toad" - Cream (Ginger Baker)
"The Black Page" - Frank Zappa (Vinnie Caliuta) "Aja" - Steely Dan (Steve Gadd) "All Blues" - Los Lobotomys (Caliuta again) Rock is harder to find great solos. Buddy Rich was, and always will be, the king. |

Ugh, hate to disagree with you Alec, but I hate Lars Ulrich. Everything from his playing, to the way he acts, the way he looks... I remember watching videos and audios of his miscues live... it's awful! You have to give credit to Metallica, no doubt... but they are definitely not the best musicians out there. (and I don't like the music that much either) They do have some great songs, though. |
