to complement Baja's thread,
What are some cool movies that you like that you'd recommend others see, that others have likely not seen or even ever heard of? also, don't be BOB and recommend movies that everyone already knows. |

Night of the Generals Electra Glide in Blue Murphy's War 3 Days of the Condor (younger members here probably haven't heard of it) Little Big Man (younger members here probably haven't heard of it) The Long Good Friday The Mouse that Roared i'll think of a few more shortly and add them to this post. Restrepo. The only real view of the war in Afghanistan. Highly recommended.

Breaker Morant is another good one that not everyone has heard of, much less seen.

In Bruges, a recent film with Colin Ferguson also that other guy.
"Bruges" is a city in Belgium. They play two mafia guys on the lam in Bruges. It's sort of a black comedy, very droll like Reservoir Dogs dialog or something. |

I'll toss out a couple we've caught in the last few weeks:
Arn: The Knight Templar Subtitled. The biggest budget ($30 mil) movie ever done in Sweden, too bad we can only get the International version here. It was actually done in two parts for the theaters in Sweden, then was shown as an 8 hour miniseries on TV. Similar to The Kingdom of Heaven from Ridley Scott (another great flick but only if you do the Director's Cut, otherwise it doesn't work well). Dear Frankie Great date night flick about a woman on the run with her deaf son. She has told the boy for years his dad is in the merchant marine, but then the ship is coming to the town they live in. Has to find someone to "play" dad. Early flick for Gerard Butler, and one of the best things he has done. Scottish made indie flick. Closet Land An early '90s flick from Amnesty International starring only two actors: Alan Rickman and Madeleine Stowe. Rickman is amazing in it. The "interview" of an author of children's books (Stowe) by an agent of The Government convinced it is subversive in it's message. Riveting and NOT an easy movie to get through. Worlds Fastest Indian Anthony Hopkins in what he says is his favorite movie. The story of Burt Monroe from New Zealand who attempts to fulfill his life long dream to set a land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Feel good flick and a true story to boot. A Very Long Engagement French film with Audrey Tautou (The Davinci Code, Amelie) starring as a young women relentlously looking for her fiance', who has disappeared from the trenches of the Somme during WWI. Subtitles again, but worth it. Amazing movie in HD, the cinematography is fantastic. More later... Last edited by Dutch; 02-06-2011 at 08:58 PM.. |

As I said in an earlier post, I had never been a fan of foreign language films, until this thread. I decided to check a couple of them out, and for the most part, have a new appreciation of them. I watched the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo first, and absolutely loved it. I gave it 5 stars on the Netflix rating system. Of course, I had to see the other two in the order you mentioned and was not disappointed. Apparently, there is an American version of the 1st one being made with Daniel Craig as the male star; but I can't imagine that they can replace Noomi Rapace so easily, as she was just awesome as the troubled, but brilliant young computer hacker. While I don't trust this remake at all, I'll watch it for sure, if only for the reason to see how badly Hollywood screws it up! |

Rambo 4. Most people think I'm joking, but it's a good flick. Pretty heavy topics and realistic action( minus the bomb scene with the nuclear shockwave).
I have sat people down and made them watch it and everyone is a fan. Give it a chance. |

When I opened this thread my first thought was: "Everyone is going to recommend ****ty flicks like The Fountain, Children of Men, Restrepo and some crazy off the wall foreign flicks with bad acting and worse directing."
Nailed this thread. |
