Default Casino Royale: Best Bond Yet

I got back from it today and I have to admit I was a bit skeptical going into it about a blond Bond. I was so, so wrong.

Let me tell you this movie was awesome. I've been re-watching every Bond through my Netflix. Right now I'm just finishing up the Moore era and am ready to kill myself with his campy performances of "gentleman on the way to the park" version of Bond with no athleticism.

This is the story of how Bond became Bond. You are introduced to the man who will become 007 and why he sees and views the world the way he does. He's getting his start as a 00-agent, and as the plot unfolds, you see what is the genesis of the great hero.

Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Connery. We see a bit more grit and less suave that's been missing since the Connery years. He is the most athletic Bond we've had since George Lazenby and plays the part a bit pissed off, which I really liked about Connery's performances, but somehow the series went away from that went toward the "I'm a guy with a snifter and a PPK."

The movie has some great action and almost all of it motivated and less contrived than in other series. The opening sequence is very clever and really brings into the story of Bond as much as it brings you into the plot.

The best thing about the movie is that they completely leave behind the campy stuff. The Bond movie has need to reform itself for awhile and starting with Goldeneye you saw that, but generally they totally let it go. There are gadgets but no "let's go get the gadgets" scene. There are hot women but it's not like they jump on his weener simply because he looked at them. Bond is tough, but he has just enough vulnerability that you appreciate the toughness.

My two knocks on it are you don't get to be introduced to the villains well enough, which is disappointing because there are quite a few that are very interesting. The other is that it's a bit long. There is a love sequence that could have been reduced to one scene, but I suppose they had to do something for the estrogen crowd.

Overall it was the best movie I've seen in theaters this year and I intend to see it again. I encourage you all to go watch it and take a date to it if you are considering it. Fun, well-made, solid movie.

The preview looks great. I've never been a big Bond fan because the I've always found the camp element too distracting. This apeears to be a slam bang action film with a lead actor who actually looks like he can fight. Its been almost 30 years since I've seen a Bond film in the theater, but I'll make an exception for this one.

It's money well spent. You won't be disappointed. George Lazenby was the last Bond who could fight - problem was that he couldn't act I plan to see it again.

Ouch. I have that as my second worst Bond ever next to Thunderball. Roger Moore is pathetic and I don't understand how anyone was able to tolerate his bumbling on screen for so long. All the Roger Moore Bond movies are just a bunch of long, very expensive 70's TV shows.

Goldeneye is worth a look. This one rocks.

No kidding. You can blame studios for that. Lucas and Spielberg started asking for upwards of 75% of profits on most of their films and everyone else followed suit. The result is a 25 cent box of milk duds for 4 dollars and $15.00 tickets.

You're being a little too harsh. The Spy Who Loved Me was a cool movie on many levels. Jaws was a totally kick ass villian and the theme song was a stone classic.

Nobody does it better

Makes me feel sad for the rest.

Nobody does it half as good as you.

Baby, you're the best

And nobody does it better

Though sometimes I wish someone could

Nobody does it quite the way you do

Did you have to be so good?

Nobody does it better

Makes me feel sad for the rest

Nobody does it half as good as you

Baby, baby, darlin' you're the best

Play that song behind some Walter Payton highlights: Instant goosebumps.

That is a great song. I've always enjoyed the opening credits and music of the Bond films. Even when the songs weren't the most popular they always worked well within the movie.

I agree The Spy Who Loved me was definitely the best of the Moore films, but I feel it was a bit overrated. Jaws was cool and there were some things I liked about that movie, like the fight in the Egyptian desert and the glass breaking fight scene. However I really felt that they just ripped off the premise from You Only Live Twice by having a large machine that engulfs smaller machines, and having the whole structure blow up at the end. I'm really tired of that. It's also partly my distaste for the lead as I really can't stand Roger Moore, but then that's just me.

EDIT: I also enjoyed The Man With the Golden Gun.

I agree with most of your views Kaylore on Casino Royale. The opening scene was great and the movie started out real good but then I thought the Poker game and the Love sequence definitley could've been kept shorter.

It was good to see no Q and unbelievable gadgets. Daniel Craig was very good as Bond. I liked how they introduced him and he was just starting out and was very vulnerable at some moments. It set ups the whole James Bond character and the other movies very good I think. From how he obtains the Aston Martin car to not trusting anyone and not falling for women and using them to his advantage.

After Connery it really went downhill. Connery had the attitude of "I'll kick your ass, sleep with your GF, and she'll like it."

Looking forward to seeing it. Was going to go with Shack, but he's broke due to car problems. Don't think I can convince the wife to go, but we'll see.

The thing about Connery was that he was 90% class and 10% bar fight. He had grit. He had a mean streak. In the earlier movies Connery could sleep with a woman and then kill her and not bat an eye. It reminded you that they guy was a paid killer. The later permutations seemed to abandon that - probably in an attempt to make it more family oriented.

The plot was a bit convoluted, but it was a step in the right direction to add realism to the character. The Brosnan Bond movies were a total mess...

Goldeneye was good, but the rest were pretty awful.

I agree. I liked Goldeneye a lot and Tomorrow Never Dies wasn't that bad but The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day were bad. They went too far fetch with Q and all those gadgets.

Brosnan was much too feminine to play Bond.

Loved it.

Thought it was a little too long. They had maybe one too many loose ends to wrap up, but I still loved it.

That was calculated. They'll wrap them up. "Bond 22" is already in pre-production.
