Default Kyle Johnson

Shanahan said Reuben Droughns could be back with the Broncos despite his wishes to be traded. However, his old starting fullback job might not be available.

"Kyle Johnson will go in as our starting fullback," Shanahan said. "Kyle had a very good year."

Shanahan also said he likes the prospect of Cecil Sapp at fullback.

Droughns was the Broncos' starting fullback last season before switching to tailback because of injuries at the position. Droughns had quick success before wearing down at the end of the season, finishing with 1,240 yards.

Droughns has attempted to cash in on his production by seeking a trade, but there has been little interest.

Shanahan said Droughns will get a chance to play if he returns and isn't upset by his trade request.

"We're allowing him to test the market," Shanahan said.

Oh sure mike just liked his TD celbration!!

Johnson proved to be a good pass catcher too. He is a tough runner. At this point if Rueban comes back I keep him at RB and he can fight it out between Him, Bell and Anderson and Griffen. The loser of those three gets cut or traded, Johnson and Sapp at FB. If both Anderson and Droughns are on the roster than Denver cuts or practice squads Sapp since both Anderson and Drougns can play FB if needed.

I don't think that Sapp can go the practice squad route again. I think he's used it up.

I thought you could be place on it twice if you were a 2nd year player or something.. Needless to say i don't know.

I think that is another reason Anderson or Droughns might go. If Shanny likes Sapp than why have both of them on the roster?

Like you, I am not totally up on the Pactice Squad rules, however this is Sapp third year, spent 03 on the PS, part of 04 on the PS as well as on the active roster. Sapp has not been very impressive, but at the same time he has not been on the field that much to have a chance at impressing.

I think that our starting RB should be Bell with Droughns splitting time a lot. I think we could have a real 1-2 punch. Bell the speedy power back and Droughns, who is pure power. We could do what Atlanta does, Dunn and Duckett. Bell IMO is better than Dunn and Droughns could be better than Duckett. I think that Q could be a good back in a shotgun formation. Like on 3rd and 15. Anderson is going to lose out. He hasn't really played much RB over the last 3 years. The one game where he played (at Indy), Q stole the show. For FB, i think that Johnson is good and that maybe Droughns could be the 2nd RB and the 2nd FB. But Droughns needs to play. He is dominant. But i think we need to lighten his load. Also, Bell gets hurt a lot so we need a quality backup, and someone who can lighten his load. Also, we need to keep Droughns because he is the man.

I cannot remember the game but we needed a first down to seal the game on 3rd and 1 and Kyle Johnson moved the whole line a good 2 yards and came though on his feet moving at least 3 defenders back . they played it back on slow motion several time it was a great block

Atlas I think Griffen will be the odd man out I could be wrong but I seen nothing out of him as a Return man and I think that is the only way he stays with the team?!?! I dont think he can handle a full work load is why he lost his starting job.

You could be right. BUT he is cheap. I think there is a possibility that either DRoughns or Anderson isn't back next year leaving a spot for Griffin. I wouldn't be too suprised to see Anderson cut. Maybe Droughns will be traded on draft day so the Broncs can move up in the 2nd or 3rd round..

I would like to see:

RB: Bell, Droughns and (Mystery meat)
FB: Kyle Johnson, Cecil Sapp

I hope Anderson is healthy and beats out Q. Q got smothered when he was healthy so being duct tape back together again? We will have to see. I don't see the Broncos using a draft pick for an RB but I wouldn't be surprised. I would hope that they find an undrafted free agent out there who by some miracle was over looked by 30 plus other teams. I just hope he's not another Santonio Beard.

I'd rather have Droughns available as our backup RB (behind Bell) anyways... He was never big enough, IMO, to play fullback. With Bell, Droughns, Anderson and Griffin we should be pretty stocked at RB and with Johnson and Sapp at FB we're pretty set in the backfield.

Johnson is a servicable player and his enthusiasm is great to see, but he is not a superstar and never will be. Since the 3 receiver sets have devalued the FB position, I don't think there is any priority to replacing Johnson, but it could happen if something fell into the Broncs lap.

Q is so different than the rest of the guys on the roster it would make sense to keep him to add a different facet to the O.

I see the RB competition coming down to MA or Rueb to backup Bell with Q being the change of pace/pass catching RB. (provided everybody comes back healthy)

Even with Q healthy it was painful to watch him get blown back by the first defender, on the positive side though, when he got into space on a screen, it was beauty.

I like KJ as the fullback. I think they will keep Q cuz as delany said, he adds another facet to the Offense. He's suited for a third down back, but he will battle it out for the starter position, which I think will go to Bell.

MA is on the outside looking in right now! Too much age and injury history with him now. But wait...Denver covets these type of players. My bad! Rueben is the odd man out.

With the salary cap you can't afford to have a super blue chip fullback. Johnson is quick, tough and catches the ball well. He also has the funniest inzone dance in the NFL!

I hope Anderson doesn't beat out Reuben but the guy with the most heart should win. I hope Reuben runs like he's got something to prove. I hope Anderson runs like this is his last hurrah.

I don't really want Q to lose out but if I had a choice between a guy who can play FB, RB and special teams versus a guy who can run the ball for my second string I'm going for depth everytime.

Q has to run with confidence in order to shake things up. If he shows the least timidity than he'll have to catch on somewhere else.

Its too early in Johnson's career to really know how good he will be. He made some good plays last year but he still has a long way to go to be like Howard Griffith.

I think Shanahan telling Droughns that he has to compete is because he wants to get his competitive juices flowing at FB because he knows RD won't be playing much HB with our depth that we have. We'll see if RD steps up and answers or if he just acts disgruntled going into the season.

I still think Anderson showed me more at HB then Drougns did. I like them both but Anderson has actually taken runs longer then 20 yds. Seems like Drougns could have a huge hole and could only get about 20 yds out of it and then he would get caught.

Anyways, doesn't matter. We have great depth at the skill positions on offense and I'm very excited about that aspect of our team. Now we just need to solidify our depth on the offensive line and at QB and I think we will be in the top five offensively next year.
