Default Chiefs propose new rules and they're not bad

Other rules issues to be discussed: The Kansas City Chiefs proposed adopting the college rule for pass interference. That sets a limit of 15 yards on interference calls. The current NFL rule puts the ball at the spot of the foul, even if it's 60 yards downfield. The Chiefs also proposed eliminating the automatic first down on an illegal contact penalty and capping the infraction at 5 yards. The Chiefs argue that an automatic first down is a pretty harsh penalty on an incomplete pass on, say, third-and-15. The other side of the fence is a 5-yard penalty would encourage more aggressive contact on long pass plays simply to avoid a big play.

I like the illegal contact proposed rule change

But the college rule for pass interference sucks…..any pass over 20 yards if a guy is beat too bad, they will just tackle the receiver

If you just make illegal contact a five yard penalty you're going to see wideouts getting mauled on every 3rd and six or longer. We covered this yesterday.

Yeah because it should be easy as hell to pick up anything over third and five.

IMO refs dont catch a large enough % of the penalties to accept this. bellichick would quickly realize he acn get away w/ it often enough that mauling receivers is worth it.

Just penalize like D-Holding, 5yds and an automatic first down. Problem....solved.

Right, because running into a receiver 10 yards from the line of scrimmage on third and 18 is definitely worthy of a first down.

It's bound to happen. Football is a contact sport. Penalizing someone for it and giving the opposition a cheap first down because of it is bull****.

My understandind was that there was going to be two types of infractions similar to the intentional and unintention facemask. So DB's after 15 yards could not just tackle or hold the WR. There would be contact of a certain nature that would constitue a spot foul over a 15 yard foul. What that would be is anyones guess, and subjective to the Officials on the field.

i like that. It will eliminate those stupid PI penalties where the DB and the WR bump on a 50 yd bomb and then the DB is flagged for a 50 yard penalty. Now it'll be a 15 yarder. It won't kill a team for accidental interference. But, then we'll have to deal with two kinds of refs: the refs who call intentional all the time and the refs who call accidental. The problem with this is that i don't like putting it into the referees' hands. As much as i hate getting called for accidental interference, i think that it might be a bad thing to make it a judgement call. And i think that illegal contact shouldn't be a first down. because it is one of those plays that gets called way too much. receivers and DBs are going to bump. Football is about contact, so a bump should not cost a team a first down. It sux when we have the other team on a third and 13, and because of a little bump, they get a first down. That's wack. It should be like an offside. I nkow the NFL doesn't want the DBs to bump the WRs, but come on. It's a huge, momentum changing play that could change the game b/c of a BUMP that's not fair to the players. I like the proposed changes, but i'm still not sold on the PI rules.

QUESTION #1: Why are the Chiefs proposing all these ideas? Is it to their advantage?

Also, will someone explain to me about the compensatory draft pics for Denver? Are they free?
