Default Broncos, not an elite team

"They are who we thought they were!"

Former head coach Dennis Green famously uttered those words after his Arizona Cardinals blew a 20-point lead and suffered a disheartening loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.

article:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...efense-is-back

My first thought was to go all postal on this guy, but what the heck he makes some valid points with the suspensions and injuries. To be honest I rather the Broncos be one of those teams people think that they don't have a chance to win the Super Bowl instead of a team everyone is picking. If you look at the last 8 or so Super Bowl winners they all faced some sort of adversity during the regular season. So I say bring it on, I still say the Bronx will be there at the end of the year!

"Meanwhile, Champ Bailey suffered a serious foot sprain in Saturday night's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Colleague Ian Rapoport hears the recovery process could take several weeks. That's a huge injury, factoring in Bailey's play and leadership, plus the overall lack of depth in the defensive backfield. With the aforementioned pass-rushing questions, this is very concerning.

Then there's Stewart Bradley , who appeared to be en route to nabbing a starting linebacker position. Now he needs surgery.

On the offensive side of the ball, Wes Welker also suffered a sprain (ankle) against Seattle. While it's not as serious as Bailey's sprain -- Welker is expected to be fine by the opener -- any time missed in developing a rapport with the meticulous Manning cannot be overlooked"

Besides the fact we are deep at corner, Stewart Bradley sucks and Welker is already back at practice, I guess he nailed it?

At least he didn't go all "Losing Dumervil crippled the defense!!!" like most of the national hacks do. I would still like to have him, but they all act like he is prime Reggie White or something

So, if I've got this right, he's saying that the Broncos have lost some key players for the start of the season. In Von Miller's case it's longer than that - a full 6 games. He still expects them to win the AFC West, but they can't be considered a powerhouse within the AFC.

Therefore, they aren't really superbowl contenders.

Because, as we all know, the superbowl is decided every September.

I was thinking this morning about the Von issue and I looked back to the 1997 season.

in 1996 we went 13-3 won the division and had home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

In 1997 we started strong winning the 1st 6 games, then stumbled vs Oakland, we finished 12-4 that year but had a 2 game losing streak late which gave kFc the division title at 13-3. There were issues on D as the year went a long, mostly some big break downs in the secondary in some close games.

Thing was when the playoffs swung around that team was on a mission which continued until John retired.

We have issues at C, MLB and now with Von out for 6 games we will have pass rush issues. This teams O is better in passing game and could score with the 1997 team. Looking at the schedule we might drop 2 during Von's "Excellent Adventure" but there is no reason we should not still win the division and gell once the playoffs start.

His argument is basically "players are hurt (to which extent is unimportant) and Von wont be there", therefore Broncos arent great!

The beginning of the season might be rocky, but once Von comes back, the Broncos are going to be dominating teams.

Me too, I didn't want them going into the season thinking they are better than they really are.

Let the Seahags and 49ers take on all the pressure of being at the top and the Broncos can just go about WINNING games.

Given Peyton Manning is our QB and most the pundits still pick us to cruise into the playoffs and likely with a bye week, it'd be difficult for this team to get a chip on its shoulder. But, there's been enough turmoil that there has to be a little bit of one. Not exactly Patriots post-Spygate running up the score every week, but hopefully something. Even successful, well-loved athletes know how to act like they have to prove something, no matter how silly it is at this point (see: Rogers, Aaron).

Another silver lining. Without a proven pass-rush, maybe these first weeks will see them stay aggressive on offense even with the lead. Fox gets into the habit of wanting 10 point leads to become 21 point leads instead of what we saw in the playoffs.

So I am the only one so far that is concerned with what has happened since the end of last season.

Losing Doom
Von on vacation
No MLB to speak of
slowly developing running game
"make shift" O line
minor injuries this summer, Champ, Kupe, Wolfe and at the center position

Yeah, color me somewhat concerned.

The pass rush definitely concerns me. The "make shift" o-line is no different from last year, as is our MLB sitch and the run game, and if everyone is back by week one, the injuries dont concern me either.
