I know.

The amount of courage needed to go through with something like this is astounding.

It's borderline inspirational and something a lot of people can learn from.

Before someone says something stupid, just because you don't understand why somebody would do something or feel a specific way doesn't mean that it is wrong. Ill never understand what it's like to feel like you are in the wrong body, but if doing this is what makes her happy, then all the power to her.

Don't bother. It wants your balls tenderly, not violently.

Also, just cuss she's been physically weakened by transition via hormones doesn't mean her ability to use a firearm with deadly precision has vanished. Recoil may be different, but yeah. Could bag any of us in all likelihood.

I honestly have no problem with it on a personal level. I also honestly believe it's a pathological disorder. I tend to feel that these surgeries only serve to feed peoples' delusions, and that the underlying sickness is ignored because it's taboo nowadays to call it anything other than 100% healthy (if a person feels that they are something other than what they were born as-- be it dog, fish, angel , or robot--they are generally treated as mentally ill but gender identity issues are different for some reason). If you are born a male you will always be a male. Surgeries and hormone treatments only alter the surface, and the demons that torment a person aren't going to simply go away because you change the surface.

All that said, if it's gender change or suicidal misery for the rest of one's life, the choice is rather obvious. I just get tired of the PC nonsense surrounding the topic. It is neither healthy or well-adjusted, and I wish they would stop pretending otherwise.

except they almost always do. don't let that get in the way of your platitudes, though. I'm sure your words are positively dripping in scientific veracity.

They almost always do? You can't be serious.

Anorexics always see themselves as fat even when they look like holocaust victims. Women who are addicted to plastic surgery always see their flaws no matter how good doctors make them look (until they ultimately end up looking far worse than when they started). Some of the most beautiful women I've ever known genuinely thought themselves ugly because of abuse as children. You are kidding yourself if you think gender alteration is going to fix all the pain and confusion in a mind that identifies as a sex that physical reality doesn't support.

There are now very refined surgical procedures that can support such delusions, but ultimately that is all they do. They don't really fix anything deep within the mind. All I know is that I hope people who are getting these surgeries have gone through extensive therapy first, and I hope they continue after because I firmly believe they suffer from a rather severe disorder somewhat related to BDD.

I'm not talking about anorexics. I'm talking about transgendered people. Those who suffer almost always get better when they transition. Of course, they often undergo a new kind of suffering, because the world rejects them. It's extraordinarily insidious to deny the existence of a person's identity, to shun them socially, to (usually) insult and berate them on a near constant basis, and then use their inevitable cracking under extraordinary circumstances as post hoc proof of their mental instability.

and to my knowledge therapy is already required before hormone therapy or transition surgery

Kidding aside that's a powerful story. Becoming a Seal in hopes of suppressing her feelings abut her sexuality and in the end making the change. Says a lot about how powerful sexual identity really is.
