Default How many rookies do NFL teams sign every year?

In the UDFA thread, Rev and I had a little back-and-forth about the number of rookies that each NFL team brings to training camp. Since the rosters expanded from 80 to 90 in 2012, I actually was speaking out of my ass a little bit when I guesstimated 25....

However, it got me to wondering about about how accurate my guess was, and the information is available online, so.... I did a little research, and thought my fellow draft-obsessives might be interested in the results:

Number of 2012 Rookies signed per team

30: St. Louis Rams (10 draft choices, 20 UDFAs)
29: Atlanta Falcons (6 draft choices, 23 UDFAs)
28: Dallas Cowboys (7 draft choices, 21 UDFAs)
27: Houston Texans (8 draft choices, 19 UDFAs)
27: Baltimore Ravens (8 draft choices, 19 UDFAs)
27: San Diego Chargers (7 draft choices, 20 UDFAs)
27: Green Bay Packers (8 draft choices, 19 UDFAs)
26: Philadelphia Eagles (9 draft choices, 17 UDFAs)
25: Cleveland Browns (11 draft choices, 14 UDFAs)
25: New Orleans Saints (5 draft choices, 20 UDFAs)
24: Minnesota Vikings (10 draft choices, 14 UDFAs)
24: Miami Dolphins (9 draft choices, 15 UDFAs)
24: Kansas City Chiefs (8 draft choices, 16 UDFAs)
24: Indianapolis Colts (10 draft choices, 14 UDFAs)
24: Jacksonville Jaguars (6 draft choices, 18 UDFAs)
24: San Francisco 49ers (7 draft choices, 17 UDFAs)
24: Oakland Raiders (6 draft choices, 18 UDFAs)
24: Arizona Cardinals (7 draft choices, 17 UDFAs)
23: Cincinnati Bengals (10 draft choices, 13 UDFAs)
23: Chicago Bears (6 draft choices, 17 UDFAs)
22: Detroit Lions (8 draft choices, 14 UDFAs)
22: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7 draft choices, 15 UDFAs)
21: Tennessee Titans (7 draft choices, 14 UDFAs)
20: Pittsburgh Steelers (9 draft choices, 12 UDFAs)
20: Carolina Panthers (7 draft choices, 13 UDFAs)
20: Buffalo Bills (9 draft choices, 11 UDFAs)
19: Washington Redskins (9 draft choices, 10 UDFAs)
19: Denver Broncos (7 draft choices, 12 UDFAs)
18: New York Jets (8 draft choices, 10 UDFAs)
18: Seattle Seahawks (10 draft choices, 8 UDFAs)
17: New York Giants (7 draft choices, 10 UDFAs)
12: New England Patriots (7 draft choices, 5 UDFAs)

Average # of drafted rookies: 7.9 (median=8, mode=7)
Average # of undrafted free agents: 15.2 (median=15, mode=14)
Average # of rookies per team: 23 (median=24, mode=24)

Looks like my estimate of 25 rookies per team was a little off.... oh well, at least I learned something.... I'm a little curious as to the massive amount of variation in the list above -- why do some very good teams like the Patriots only sign 5 UDFAs, while others, like the Ravens and the Texans, sign 20 or more?

***UPDATE***

I found a much better source for 2012 UDFAs, so I revised the figures above (but the original post was essentially true).

http://www.profootballweekly.com/201...agent-signings

In all, there were 737 rookies invited to training camps last year (253 draft choices and 485 UDFAs).

Interesting.

Looks like the numbers we used for the Free Agent round were correct. At most you could get 20 Free Agents if you won with all 5000 bids, otherwise you were getting less.

So, don't change a thing about UDFA Round 1.

We do need to figure out what to do regarding leftover money. I definitely do disagree with Rev when he says the players in UDFA Round 1 and 2 are the same caliber. The steals get picked over badly in UDFA 1. I think the game should continue until every player has the opportunity to exhaust his 100k. The penalty for being a crappy bidder in UDFA is you won't get the guys you really wanted. If you think you can get a guy for 5k, than that's a risk to take.

So, it seems like either we keep doing rounds until people quit or their funds are exhausted, or we just make it first come, first serve after the UDFA round at 5k per player.

part of the purpose of the OM Mock Draft process is to watch "your guys" develop and see how they came to be (thus bragging rights).

Honestly, the 400 + udfa usually do not make it. For fun purposes (and wasting time in between) of studying that 1200 man list is fine, but for the purpose of bragging rights its quite useless (unless you get very lucky on that 1200th guy )

i honestly can care less past the 7 round mock, and even then it is a stretch for me but I love time it takes to do and helps pass time!

This post on PFT states that there were actually 622 UDFAs signed by NFL teams in 2012 (19.4 per team), which is quite a bit more than the 485 I calculated.

So... an average of 8 draft choices & 19.4 UDFAs per team = 27.4 rookies per team on average last year.

Wow... that seems like a lot, doesn't it?
