Default OT: Give the OM A piece of advice from your career/industry

We have people here that do a TON of different jobs, what is one piece of advice or knowledge you would give everyone from the OM that people outside your industry dont or wouldnt know? Should come up with some cool tidbits of information. Name your industry and advice

Mine: Athletics.

Want your kid to be a great athlete? Enroll them in gymnastics and soccer early in life, dont begin the sport specialization process til 14-16 years old at the earliest. Allow your kid to pick the sport they want to play, and give them a few months off from sports every year to focus on offseason work (strength/speed/recovery).

Replace your air filter with a k@n air filter. They are a lifetime air filter that you clean.
They filter out smaller dirt particles and flow air better
(Do not use in diesel engines ) then bump your tire air pressure up to around 35 psi on most cars
And watch your gas mileage increase by 2 to 3 miles per gallon

Do not go into teaching if you think its an easy job and you are just settling since you can't do other things.

Maybe in long years past it was easy to get away with, but today as a teacher your job is pretty damn tough. With the public on a witch hunt (which honestly yes, there are some bad teachers, but most of the bad teachers just don't last), it is hard to be a lazy teacher. Its expected that you run some kind of club, coach or do activities. Your job as a teacher is more of a 10+ hour per day job now. You might still get your summers, but with the amount of professional development they want you to do, it will be interrupted constantly.

Stay away from teaching unless you actually LIKE teaching. There are very few teachers coming out of college right now that are natural teachers. The public has scared people away from teaching so much, we may actually have very bad teachers in the very near future. Take away the benefits of a low paying tough job and you take away the quality that came with the bad in the first place.

Just warning you, very bad teachers are flooding into the teaching profession because of pay by performance type pay schedules, year round schooling, higher expectation of proof of growth, more evaluation and worst of all, the law passed that redefines tenure.

Ok, too much ranting, you get the point or you did long ago and quit reading.

Learn how to speak and write.....

it sounds simple but if you cannot do the 2 things above, you'll be behind the eight ball in the business world. Speaking is not just being able to speak in front of a crowded boardroom, it is knowing what to say and how to say it. I had a manager early in my career write this on the whiteboard when I was giving a long winded response SUCCINCT.

Speak clearly and succinctly helps get your point across and not lose the audiences attention.

Writing, well that's pretty simple.....

One final thought, taking on assignments you do not like is a way to move forward. The more work you take on without complaint, the easier it is for you to request the pay raise, promotion, or move up.

Keep your driver's license clean and current. Without a valid license I can't employ you to your fullest.

Show up to work. You would be surprised how many warm bodies paid attention, applied themselves and after sometime worked into supervisory role.

Call your prospective clients and leads back. You would be absolutely shocked how many of my clients came from other firms who just would not call them back, wouldn't give them the time of day.

I have a pretty full client roster, so sometimes I have to turn down work. I don't do it by just not answering phone calls or emails. I respond, let them know that with the time it would take to get their project done and done right, I simply don't have the manpower or time to work with them. THIS time. I then recommend another small firm, wish them luck, and tell them I'll be in touch down the road.

This simple act -- it's a 5-10 minute phone call, really -- is ignored by many, many people.

Research your position at other companies. If there is a position that exists elsewhere that could help, or if there are things that could be done to help the company that no one is currently handling, tell your boss you want to handle those things. You can get yourself a raise or new title in the process and it makes your resume transferable.

Show up on time and come in Mondays and Fridays. People notice.

Auto Broker:

A CARFAX isn't the end all be all. Accident listed? A bad car fax can be something as simple as a 5mph parking lot crunch, where they replaced a bumper cover. Conversely, not everything gets reported to CARFAX, so check for things like: frame damage, painted areas, irregular tread wear on tires, etc. Services that have been performed don't always show up, so ask if there are any records. And don't just take "it's a clean CARFAX" to mean that it's all copacetic, because if it was wrecked, someone could have just simply not reported it, and gotten it fixed by a third party.

If you're searching for a used car, go with a reputable company. If you have any hesitations at all about the vehicle, ask to take it to a trusted mechanic.

For real though:

Pay attention to the details. They matter most. Being accurate and precise is better than fast and erroneous. Always give something a second or third look, because if you blaze through it and mess it up, it is going to take you twice as long to redo your projects than keeping a steady and calm pace the first time.
