His achievements as the Broncos head coach should be untarnished. But the team did sink into mediocrity his final years here. He's done nothing in Washington to make you think that was more an aberration than a trend.
At the time they were hired, coaches like Red Miller, Dan Reeves, and Mike Shanahan were what the doctor ordered and all three led the Broncos to some of the most exciting seasons ever and 6 SB appearances between 1977-1998. By the same token at the time they were fired they deserved to be fired.....

Mike is unanimously considered our greatest HC due to the back to back titles won. But it's not 1997-98 anymore.

Mike Shanahan coached the Broncos for 14 seasons averaging 9.8 wins per season....... His Broncos finished top 10 in scoring 10 times and 7 times in points allowed

Mike Shanahan went 138-86-0 as Broncos head coach (.619) and went 8-5 in the post season with 3 AFCCG appearances and 2 conference titles and 2 SB Redskins head coach he is 24-37 (.393) and is 0-1 in the post the Raiders head coach he went 8-12 (.400)

Overall he is 170-135-0 (.557) and 8-6 (.571) in post season with 3 AFCCG appearances, 3 AFC titles and 2 SB titles.

However, since his last Broncos playoff season (2005) his teams have gone a combined 48-62 including playoffs (.436%)

Without Elway he is 124-125-0 (.498%) including post yeah he's a bit over rated now and deserves to be jobless.
