I've been listening to The Kinks a lot lately. Highly underrated band. They got over shadowed in the British Invasion craze by bands like The Beatles and the Stones, but their best stuff stands up well with anybody. Their only really big America hits were "You've Really Got Me" and "Lola", and it's a shame.
Something Else By The Kinks is every bit as good as Revolver, IMHO. The Village Green Preservation Society, Face to Face, and Muswell Hillbilies are also stellar classics. Novices may want to start with The Kink Kronkikles, an excellent overview of their most fertile period during the late 60s-early 70s.
If you want to whet your appetite with some individual songs, try any of the following: "Waterloo Sunset", "Shangri-La", "Get Back In Line", "Oklahoma USA" (Yo La Tengo does an excellent cover of this), "This Is Where I Belong", "Days", "Dead End Street"...Jesus, I could could go on and on.
