There is ample evidence for Jesus' existence even outside of the Bible Josephus the Historian is a good source. We have a guy that did exist and that said some controversial things. There really is no legit debate over whether he existed or not. A good book to read on the subject is "The Case for Christ". It is a very thorough analysis of the evidence done by a nonbeliever.
I believe jesus knew of things, because they were orchestrated - King of the jews - could be, depending on his linage - and to say that his father was a simple carpenter could be misleading - after all - if jesus was a rabbi - where would his wife have been?
