I was never all that big on Smyth....she seemed kinda b****y and pouty with Scandal to me, which turned me off from her early on.....granted I haven't heard any of her solo material that I can recall and Scandal was over 20 years ago, so I speak of then and not now simply because I can't in good faith.
I must confess I've never heard the Van Halen story before.......if the fanbase was pissed off by Hagar and Eddie's sudden "I wanna play keyboards" thing, I can only
imagine what the hiring of Smyth to replace Roth would've done to them.....that would've caused rioting in the streets or something I'm sure
